He told me go down such and such street (past Four Seasons) and across the street there's a place. But if that's not open, go kitty corner from that place to the little grocery store. We just pass Four Seasons and my ex goes "That's Jennifer Flavin and Sylvester Stallone putting their kids in that cab." I look back and it was. We proceed down the street and notice they're proceeding down the same street on the other side. First wine place is closed, so we head kitty corner and notice we're gonna end up right behind the Slys and look like total stalkers. Still, it was cool to see eyeballs bug out and heads jerk around for a double-take as we followed them into the grocery store. I go straight for the wine rack in the center of the store. Sly swings left and Flavin right. As I'm standing at the wine rack checking out a bottle he walks straight at me and stops at the rack. I glance up and say the first thing that pops into mind, which turns out to be "Hey, what's up Big Sly." He responds with a "Hey, what's up" back. My day is made so I grab my wine and boogie from the store. Like I said, for what it's worth.

Intentional mumbling is a way of communicating I used with my fellow worker bees. I started it, mumble the words just enough, that from 10 feet away you cant understand it, but from 3 feet away you could make out what is being said. The other guys learned to do it also, and God, we never laughed so hard in our lives. Great times, I miss that crew.

I wish I could demo it, there is an art to it, and we got pretty good at it. The humor is in the mumble, the word, and the idea, all at once.

I can't watch sitcoms anymore because all I end up hearing are laugh tracks... And then I start mimicking them mockingly. It's horrible.

I've been to sitcom recording in the UK, and they show the OB stuff to the studio audience on big screens during the filming of the studio stuff, hopefully in the right order, and record their reaction. Little tip for Larry next time. ;)

Hi Jerry! Big fan and tv employee. So did you guys not shoot the exteriors, then play them back in front of the audience for laughs, during the full audience show day?

Just curious, because I've worked in tv a long time behind the scenes and that's how we did multi-cam.

Also, I think laughs help the actors with timing. Do you think having a live audience responding with laughs helps you with your timing?

Can you name a current (last ~5 years or so) sitcom with a laugh track that you enjoy and believe benefits from the track?

I ask because I shared your opinion about how the laugh track can be appropriate for a show in the right situations (Seinfeld, Married with Children, etc.), yet I honestly can't think of a post-Seinfeld example.

I've seen all the episodes enough now, I can clearly identify the same laugh clips in numerous episodes.

I always thought that the presence of laughter in one scene then the absence of it in another was one of the things that made Seinfeld so.... Seinfeld.

I wouldn't feel too guilty about it. I watch a lot of sitcoms with canned laughter and think "that's not funny, who would laugh at this crap?", but with Seinfeld... It's all GOLD, JERRY, GOLD! ^Ahem.. sorry.

How do you feel about Arrested Development?

The first time I ever watched an unedited episode of a sitcom it made me realize how like a play it is. Although you don't get the "best" versions of every scene by getting it all as one performance, it flows better and feels richer. Television is over-edited. I'd rather they pick one complete performance and air that.

we had real laughs on the scenes that were shot in front of an audience, but then we would shoot other scenes that were not in front of the audience (which didn't have any laughs) and then it felt like a bit of a mismatch, so we tried to compromise and put in a subtle laugh track.

By subtle, you mean "seamless"? Because when it cuts to an outdoor scene or some new set, the laughs continue at exactly same volume and intensity.

There's a famous story that you asked for people not to applaud Kramer's sliding entrance because you didn't want that to be a typical "sitcom moment" (which I 100% agree with). Is that true?

It's one of those things that I'm sure some interpreted to mean "oh Jerry's a diva he doesn't want his costar getting applause," but to me spoke to your understanding of the medium and trying to avoid Seinfeld becoming a typical sitcom, and one of the reasons it's endured all these years.

It's a bit jarring when you catch an old episode of MASH and it has the laugh track. Doesn't seem to fit.

Curb is an example of a show that is funnier without a laugh track. In my opinion, most sitcoms would be better without a laugh track, because it seems like laughter is being force upon me even when something isn't that funny. Also, it just sounds cheesy. But I think it is also true that without their laugh tracks, many sitcoms would be way too awkward to watch because of how naturally unfunny they are.

I'm really glad to hear your response to this. I think the laugh track on The Big Bang Theory is incessant, overkill, and is just downright annoying to me. Yet, in Seinfeld, every so often you hear that one person who's laughing hysterically, seemingly genuinely, and it makes the joke even funnier. I think the laugh track in Seinfeld enhances the show,

what i've heard that little britain does is they will film the live scenes first. and then while they've got the audience on set for other scenes they will show them the film and record the laughter to add to the final edit on the show.

I love your expression right after you steal the rye from the lady on the street, because the character Seinfeld wasn't perhaps the most "moral" guy in the world (the four operate off their own morals!), but stealing is definitely a line he was hesitant to cross. That is one of my favorite episodes ever. Everything fit together so well and one weird scenario led to another until Newman hit the sewing machine. It was perfect.

To this day I still say "these lanes are so luxurious" and weave a little bit whenever I'm on a road with oddly wide lanes.

That's one of my favorite scenes! I laugh every time I think about it. You guys are funny. Growing up I watched your show so it had an impact on the style of humor that developed in people from my generation.

That is by FAR my favorite episode. I still to this day say out loud "oo, wide lanes! So luxurious!" Whenever I drive through construction zones where the lines are removed from the street. And people know exactly what I'm referring to. I did however have to stop swerving when saying it as I have children now and it gets a bit dangerous lol.

I remember hearing that you only wrote your jokes on pen and paper, not on a computer. Can you go into maybe where you write your jokes/material and when? Do you always carry pen and paper on you so you can write them down at any given time?

"Luxury Lanes" is a phrase I have uttered more than once while driving.

That line or Newman's "Jambalaya!" line are probably 2 of my all time favorite lines in any tv show ever. I very clearly recall seeing the "humanity" line on TV when it aired new and I was in tears laughing at it.

Also I saw you laughing at the end of the scene where Newman gives your character flees, and cries, "Ahh, I'm ripped with flees!" It made the cut, you must've laughed every take. I would've too. haha

I'm kinda surprised it wasn't The Boyfriend, given how huge of a Mets fan you are.

As a side note, do match commentary more often on SNY. Those games are always the most entertaining to watch.

Ah!, I only just saw this episode for the first time a few weeks a go (UK) and the humanity reference was lost on me, I've been thinking about it on and off since I saw it.

this is where the ADULT shows are, the REAL shows like Murphy Brown.

Funny how a topical 90's sitcom ages out so quickly.

Edit: rereading that comment reminded me of a review on a short-lived revival of Rent. In short,

September 11 forced New Yorkers to think about other issues than AIDS or how guitarists and filmmakers would be able to sustain their living arrangements in Alphabet City

"Serious" 90's issues somehow became so trite that the minutiae are the only parts that still resonate.

As someone who also quits things and feels strongly about stopping things when I don't feel excited anymore, I found this quite inspirational. Probably not going to do anything about it though.
