Sony Pictures Animation has added James Corden and Broad Cityโs Ilana Glazer to Emojimovie: Express Yourself, its summer 2017 pic that โreveals the Secret World inside your smartphone.โ They join the previously set T.J. Miller in the lead voice cast. Check out the first image above.
Anthony Leondis is directing the story that takes place in Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phoneโs user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression โ except for Gene (Miller), who was born without a filter. Determined to become โnormal,โ he enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (Corden) and the notorious Jailbreak (Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic โapp-ventureโ to find the code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before itโs deleted forever.
I am honestly stunned that a company as big as Sony Pictures can fuck up this many times in the past few years. I honestly do not understand how the head executives don't see this as another terrible idea.
After reading some of those emails, this isn't really all that surprising to me.

Ghostbusters, The Angry Birds Movie, Miracles from Heaven, The Brothers Grimsby, Risen, The Fifth Wave, Pixels, Aloha, Chappie, Sex Tape, Amazing Spiderman 2, The Monuments Men, Robocop.
Sony as a company has been fucking up since the 90's. Losing millions every year. They got taken off of the list of the most productive companies in Japan, and actually, have come to be known as low quality shit.
PS4 was their first lucky break since the Walkman, almost.
Well, I mean, it is plot-wise. But this movie is gonna make bank. Probably.
At least, the execs think it will.
Studios are interested in making money, not works of art. There's a reason all these kids movies follow the same formula: it works.

Yeah but emojis are keyboard characters that represent emotions. A sad face emoji character that is sad all the time and a happy face emoji that's always happy sounds like Inside out to me. I'd say we're both right.

The comparison is that an Emoji movie is a cash grab movie idea, which will surely have shit writing and will probably lose money. Just like Ghost Busters.
No Man's Sky was a video game with poor quality and best known for its deceitful advertising campaign. That's nothing like this situation.
You need to go back to kindergarten and research what shape hole square pegs fit into.
Why do we always need an edgy chick? We had one in the Lego Movie, and her being there just to be endgame girlfriend was the worst part.
Donโt get me wrong, she wasn't a bad character. But Batman at the end, "You're a cool dude, Im just an asshole, you can date her because you're such a nice guy."
... I don't think you get what I'm saying. The point was that a kid made the entire story. Yes, I get that adult men wrote it, but it's supposed to be with the perspective of a child, who doesn't understand subtlety or nuance.

Zootopia is wayyyy better. Pets was fine, not the best by any means, but I went with a bunch of grad students and everyone else enjoyed it. I think we all had low expectations though.

I have seen both, I liked Pets but simply adored Zootopia. The comparison is kind of unfair, though. It's like comparing Looney Tunes to Animal Farm, or a softserve with sprinkles on top to a gourmet steak dinner. They're not meant to compete with each other. Go see both!

It ain't terrible, it just manages to completely lack substance or a good story/narrative.
...Yeah that sets the bar very low but it redeems itself with nice visuals, animation, slapstick and occasionally entertaining characters. Its just very... Unlike an actual movie, despite its efforts. A series of sketches strung together by a meaningless plot, really.
But that said yeah just watch the damn thing anyway
Eh, I found it just really mediocre. There's nothing outright wrong with it, but that's kind of the problem. There's just nothing entertaining about it. You can see the plot coming from a mile away, so much so that you're almost shocked how predictable it is. I think I laughed at one joke.
Can't wait to see Dicks Out For Hambre give Bad Luck Brian some life advice.

Pepe is the meme refugee hiding with the trolls under a bridge after being exiled for his association with white supremacy. At this point in the movie, it's revealed that the protagonist, Dat Boi, is actually Pepe's son.
There was a "RickRoll The Movie" in production at one point but no one knows what really happened to it. Its social media pages just post clickbait articles now.

Well, you see what happened was that they had an actual movie lined up and it was half way done from my understanding. Then, shit happened, and they lost all their work. So, instead of scraping the idea altogether, they pulled their resources and we got Food Fight.
The rules of the internet are just that, for the internet. That said, it would probably fall under the same relationship between Rule 34.4 and Rule 34.6.
Basically the movie industry works like this (because the top execs are all shitbags who just want to do cocaine off of a whore's anus until they overdose, apparently).
One studio buys a script for an amazing once in a lifetime movie idea.
Every other studio gets wind and searches through their massive collections of scripts until they find something close (they have tens of thousands).
They all form "wacky super cool idea parties", which is corporate speak for a bunch of lame asses drinking sadness away while writing for a paycheck, to rewrite their scripts to be like the amazing movie.
This just might be the most generic bullshit excuse for a plot I've ever read and I don't know what the actors had to have been smoking to agree to join it.
So are all the emojis aside from the protagonist going to have the same expression for the whole movie? I mean, apart from the end where everyone will obviously realize that having more than one expression was great all along? They're just going to do all their dialogue and react to every event in the story with the same fucking expression? Even the smarmy poop emoji?

The left one is going to be the one who keeps to herself and has some stupid backstory where her father dies or something. Her and the main character don't get along at first but after awhile she opens up to him.
The middle one is the main character, and is "different" from the rest. He pushes against the norm and want to do something more with his life.
The right one is probably the main characters stupid friend who makes a lot of dumb jokes. Basically Patrick Star from 'SpongeBob'.
They are going to go on a quest initiated by the main character. He'll grab his stupid friend to come along and they'll meet the goth on the left at some point early in the movie. As they progress on the quest the main character and the goth start to bond with each other. Either the main character or the goth will reveal something to the other, which causes the whole group to split up and mope around for 10 minutes. After they inevitably get back together, they'll finish the quest and there will be some terrible musical number at the end.
Also every plot point in the movie will be caused by the stupid friend doing something stupid.
The character's name is "Jailbreak" (good work on that one guys), but what emoji it's supposed to be is anyone's guess. I think it's just a regurgitation of the Lego Movie's Wyldstyle.

For me at least it was just like any other Seth Roger stoner comedy that tried to have a moral that was insanely blunt that only someone baked out of their mind would think is subtle, and then animate it all and have a food orgy scene to top it off. It doesn't work for me, but see for yourself.

It is a good idea. Emojis are insanely popular with little kids. So why not make a movie about emojis for little kids who.....theyre insanely popular with.

I'm disappointed in us. As a human race, how did we let this happen? No, seriously. Think about it. Sony's board of directors, the director of this film, the producers, the actors, the writers, and the investors all had to agree that "Yes, this is a thing that we should do." I mean, 300 million years of cognitive evolution and no one in that lineup of people thought that "Hey, maybe an emoji movie is the worst idea ever?"
And people say that humans are an advanced species. At least the Neanderthals didn't greenlight a 2 hour film about smiley faces you send to your friends to tell them that you found what they just said to be funny.

I miss the days before the fire was kindled. It was cold but sane.
My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.'. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed.
At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because this movie gave me cancer anyway.

Why? Not because it's good, but quite the opposite. I honestly can't wait to download this steaming pile of dog shit and laugh at how horribly clichรฉd and forced the characters are, how bland and generic the plot is, and how genuinely terrible it's going to be. Abominations like this fascinate me, it's like going to the zoo.
Movie studios are this desperate for name recognition now - hoping that even that faintest familiarity with a developed property will draw viewers in - "emojis? I love embedding dozens of those into my online discourse! Maybe I should think about going to see this!"
Alright guys, there's only one reasonable solution: We're all gonna have to band together and then, with our combined strength and resources, sail to, and settle, the Palmyra Atoll. The island's isolated enough that we should be safe. Plus, it's an incorporated territory of the United States, so any children we have there will be American citizens from birth, and we will be perfectly within our right to apply for Statehood after this apocalypse ends.

Here's the thing. My 4 year old daughter loves emojis. Several months ago McDonald's had little plush emojis in their happy meals and she still plays with them on a regular basis...more-so than the other cheapo plastic bs you often find in happy meals.
I'm going to have to pay for two tickets to see this movie. I may very well be bored out of my tree. It may be horribly painful to sit through...but that's ok because I know my daughter will get some joy out of it.
So maybe, just maybe, this movie isn't being made for the average member of the reddit community? Maybe kids always have and always will like shitty things? I don't know. If you feel like it might give you "cancer" maybe don't watch it?

I agree with you my parents were bored out of their skulls with the pokemon movies but they went anyways because I wanted to see it.
I know you're probably joking, but no, that was not what I meant. There are plenty of cartoons, old and new, which respect kid's intelligence and not made to lure them by flashing colors. Maybe a bit too early to show most of them, but I'd rather have a kid watching old disney stuff than Emoji bullshit.
She also loves the old Donald Duck and Goofy shorts from the 40's and 50's. While that's all well and good she's also developed a powerful distrust and hatred of the Japanese for some reason.
You haven't seen this movie. I guarantee when it comes out it'll be every bit as intelligent as the fucking little mermaid or the dancing teapots in beauty and the beast, or timon and pumba in the lion king.

To everyone freaking out here, Its not meant for you, its a kids movie, its meant for 8 YEAR OLDS. Thats why you think its cringy. If youre over 25 cringing at this right now thats good, it wasnt made for you. I just think that everyone (including me) forgets sometimes that not all movies are targeted to our age group. I had this realization with the Avengers movies and why theyre so kiddie, because theyre made for 11 year olds. Im 30, im not SUPPOSED to find them compelling in the same way I enjoy Daredevil on Netflix. Those days are over. So maybe, just see this movie as what it is, a movie for 4-8 year olds and you'll understand both why it was made and why you're completely disinterested in it.

It ain't terrible, it just manages to completely lack substance or a good story/narrative. ...Yeah that sets the bar very low but it redeems itself with nice visuals, animation, slapstick and occasionally entertaining characters. Its just very... Unlike an actual movie, despite its efforts. A series of sketches strung together by a meaningless plot, really.

Well, you see what happened was that they had an actual movie lined up and it was half way done from my understanding. Then, shit happened, and they lost all their work. So, instead of scraping the idea altogether, they pulled their resources and we got Food Fight.

The left one is going to be the one who keeps to herself and has some stupid backstory where her father dies or something. Her and the main character don't get along at first but after awhile she opens up to him.
The middle one is the main character, and is "different" from the rest. He pushes against the norm and want to do something more with his life.
The right one is probably the main characters stupid friend who makes a lot of dumb jokes. Basically Patrick Star from 'SpongeBob'.
They are going to go on a quest initiated by the main character. He'll grab his stupid friend to come along and they'll meet the goth on the left at some point early in the movie. As they progress on the quest the main character and the goth start to bond with each other. Either the main character or the goth will reveal something to the other, which causes the whole group to split up and mope around for 10 minutes. After they inevitably get back together, they'll finish the quest and there will be some terrible musical number at the end.
Also every plot point in the movie will be caused by the stupid friend doing something stupid.

I'm disappointed in us. As a human race, how did we let this happen? No, seriously. Think about it. Sony's board of directors, the director of this film, the producers, the actors, the writers, and the investors all had to agree that "Yes, this is a thing that we should do." Here's the thing. My 4 year old daughter loves emojis. Several months ago McDonald's had little plush emojis in their happy meals and she still plays with them on a regular basis...more-so than the other cheapo plastic bs you often find in happy meals.
I'm going to have to pay for two tickets to see this movie. I may very well be bored out of my tree. It may be horribly painful to sit through...but that's ok because I know my daughter will get some joy out of it.
So maybe, just maybe, this movie isn't being made for the average member of the reddit community? Maybe kids always have and always will like shitty things? I don't know. If you feel like it might give you "cancer" maybe don't watch it?

To everyone freaking out here, Its not meant for you, its a kids movie, its meant for 8 YEAR OLDS. Thats why you think its cringy. If youre over 25 cringing at this right now thats good, it wasnt made for you. I just think that everyone (including me) forgets sometimes that not all movies are targeted to our age group. I had this realization with the Avengers movies and why theyre so kiddie, because theyre made for 11 year olds. Im 30, im not SUPPOSED to find them compelling in the same way I enjoy Daredevil on Netflix. Those days are over. So maybe, just see this movie as what it is, a movie for 4-8 year olds and you'll understand both why it was made and why you're completely disinterested in it.
