How most of my sms conversations go with either parent.

Me: Hey Dad! I was thinking we could grab some dinner at Cheevers, have you ever been there?

Dad: NO

Me: I think you'd like it, wanna go with us?

Dad: YES

Me: Cool, we will be there at 7. See you then!

Dad: OK

You forgot the other scenario.

Dad: Thanks. I will see you then. Love, Dad.

sujihime ยท 108 points ยท Posted at 07:43:26 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

My mom does this but inconsistently. It's random on when she uses U or you, r or are. So weird...

Lofty_Vagary ยท 47 points ยท Posted at 11:30:42 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I think there's a point in everyone's modern day messaging career, where they waver between styles. I did shorthand for ages 12-17, then realized I type plenty fast enough to always come across as a literate person, so I slowly switched to writing everything out. Takes a little while to fully transition.

phespa ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 16:15:30 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

You are right... Everybody has a period when they do the "modern" (not really awesome) stuff.... Somebody has it when they are teens, and other people even in 40s...

SinkHoleDeMayo ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:37:46 on August 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Same. I stopped using shorthand around the same time. My older relatives would type that way and it drove me fucking nuts. Seriously, you aren't a kid, type like someone who can fucking read!

LadyLizardWizard ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 03:51:45 on September 18, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I think switching from flip phones to smart phones makes a big difference as well. It was much more necessary to use shortcuts when you just had the number keys.

[deleted] ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 07:22:28 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

My mom uses more emoji, but that's about it.

In his left nostril. Far enough to penetrate to the brain and give him internal bleeding. It's a messy business, rather not go into details.

My mom usually adds about 5-8 exclamation or question marks at the end of her texts. I've tried telling her one is enough but I doubt she'll ever change.

VoilaVoilaWashington ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 02:57:58 on August 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That's a fun fact????????

GrandmaGos ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 12:12:46 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)*

I have a Facebook friend who is a little older than I am (which puts her in her mid-60s), and while the majority of her FB posts are in plain English, she has the mildly infuriating habit of using "gr8" constantly. She doesn't have a good time, she has a gr8 time. Every single damn time. It makes me wanna come over there and smack her. "Is there a pixel shortage? You wrote out all the rest of the words, and some of them were pretty big words, too. Why not write out 'great'?"

DeusExMockinYa ยท 29 points ยท Posted at 13:33:00 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Smartphones with autocorrect are killing textspeak. They still let us get away with 'u' and 'r' but most shorthand gets autocorrected to the full word.

Coffeebiscuit ยท 17 points ยท Posted at 07:30:24 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

That's because the current generation of parents grew up with t9 and a limited amount of characters.

Kevinement ยท 49 points ยท Posted at 10:35:07 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

current generation of parents

Define the current generation of parents. My mom definitely didn't grow up with t9, because there were no mobile phones back then, and I'm not a parent but I had t9 and a character limit.

T9 only got replaced once the smartphones took over, and I think that happened mostly after the iPhone 3gs was released, which was only 6 years ago.

Willy-FR ยท 27 points ยท Posted at 12:10:59 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

maybe his mom is 17 and he's a very articulate 3 year old?

Lofty_Vagary ยท -8 points ยท Posted at 11:27:37 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Found the pedant

VoilaVoilaWashington ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 13:27:16 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

It's not pedantry if it's a fundamental dispute. My father is 65 and does this. I am 32 and grew up with T9. My father got his first cell phone after I did.

I can see this being true of the parents of 15 year olds, but for the Redditors who are over 20, it's almost universally untrue.

Lofty_Vagary ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 02:50:46 on August 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I found it pedantic since, as you've laid out, it's almost universally untrue for redditors over 20, so I saw /u/Coffeebiscuit's joke right away.

VoilaVoilaWashington ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:55:35 on August 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

so I saw /u/Coffeebiscuit's joke right away.

What joke?

Lofty_Vagary ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 16:10:33 on August 30, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

The statement he made was an obvious exaggeration/hyperbole, and thus a joke. Sorry you missed the laugh.

Fenzik ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 09:15:59 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

I grew up with that and I'm 23. They grew up without cell phones or Internet.

gormster ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 11:29:38 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Face it - your peers are fast becoming the current generation of parents.

cranberry94 ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 11:49:46 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, but those parents aren't old enough to have children making comments about their texting on the Internet.

It does.

EatingSteak ยท -5 points ยท Posted at 12:30:17 on August 29, 2015 ยท (Permalink)

My explanation - parents type like slow old people, and every keystroke is a lot of effort, so they want to conserve. Teens actually know how to type, so using full words isn't much effort
