It's OK. Her audience isn't going to run out and buy Bitcoin immediately, but this will plant the seed in their mind that it's a legitimate thing. Not a dark web ponzi scam for terrorists and child pornographers.
Maybe some of them will decide to read more about it, but they'll still not really get it.
Piece by piece it starts to make sense like a jigsaw puzzle, then you have another person who understands the concept of an alternative economy and might decide to buy in.
I completely agree. Word of mouth is the best type of marketing. People listen to people they trust, and as much as I hate how much influence celebrities have, I'm sure Ellen has definitely planted a seed.

I first read the name Bitcoin online, but didn't pay it much attention. Then a friend of mine briefly talked about it but he couldn't explain it well. (I don't think he really understood it) and then another friend advised me to get some. This all took place over several years. Finally one day I sat down and did my own research and came to the conclusion that a People's money was cool and a good idea.
Sometimes people reach a destination at their own speed.
Similar thing happened to me. I thought Bitcoin was some kind of video game token haha. Then my cousin mentioned it to me and tried to explain blockchain tech and completely confused me. I researched a little, got overwhelmed, and forgot about it until another friend brought it up. Soon after, I fell into the rabbit hole. :)
in marketing there is a principle where you must "touch" the customer 7 times before a person takes an action. in traditional marketing these "touches" can be like an ad on the subway, an ad in a magazine, facebook ad, word of mouth from a friend, etc. those are just examples of "touches."
i think this is a principle for people that get into crypto as well. you might read about it from an article and then forget about it. then you hear about bitcoin from a friend and forget about it. then you might hear about it from a family member and then finally start to research this whole cryptocurrency thing.
i do my part in "touching" people by posting about crypto on my facebook. i don't tell anyone to buy or anything but just post interesting articles or news.
i think everyone should keep this principle in mind as well and do their part in making crypto more mainstream.
Ellen is so stupid. She didn't teach her audience anything at all. Oh no, I accidentally washed my Ledger Nano S, I lost all my money! No, that's not how it works.
Yeah, I get that, but the part with the Ledger just annoyed me, because it's pretty misleading. I don't mind the jokes about Bitcoin's value and whatnot.

I don't think it's misleading. I think it's relatively realistic considering the demographic her audience is. Her audience is tech illiterate middle aged house moms and house dads who realistically would be the people to accidentally lose (or whatever else) their Ledger and not have the seeds/key phrase their 15 year old kids set up for them backed up somewhere. Really though, i think she just didn't want to overwhelm her audience with information. If she started going into seeds and key phrases she'd have lost them. I think her goal was to give them just enough of a crash course to want to go and do their own research and i think she succeeded at that.
yeah i was like that when a friend explained to me what btc is back in 2013-2014 i think. and here i am looking at those charts and investing to different altcoins.
I don't think she's dumb at all, I think she dumbs things down for the wider audience and then makes fun of herself for sounding dumb. Sometimes I think she's doing this with the most awesome, altruistic intentions and wants to make change and is in the position to do it really quickly. Then sometimes I think she's part of the money machine and is just doing it for the ratings. Prefer to believe the first.

Literally the opposite of how wide adoption of crypto tech works. We want them to know what this stuff is and we want them to start using it. That's the whole point. Crypto is not your favorite indie band from high school that you called a sell out once they got popular.
They're doing to pump the price up and then dump it the second it starts to lose momentum

That's going to happen regardless. Has been happening before the mainstream got wind of this and it'll continue to happen afterwards, until ICO/exchanges start having to adhere to regulations. None of that is the fault of new people coming in.
It is massively made worse by new people coming in because they don't know how horribly volatile the market is. That's just common sense my dude

It kind of doesn't matter. Crypto's success depends on more and more people using it, does it not my dude? It's not meant to be some little niche club. It then becomes the cryptos job to get better at scaling so it can handle the increase in users. Which is precisely why we cheer on the cryptos that have working products and release updates to their tech specifically for the reason of it being ready for when more people come. Keeping people out is not beneficial to crypto.
