The main story is short, they have to put something above the fold and based on the comments about the town I'd guess the contest was the next biggest news and definitely lead image.
So again, how do you attach a mouse to interact with a physical newspaper? If you still haven't gotten the implication, clickbait is a term to do with the internet alone.
Misleading titles are NOT clickbait. Irrelevant titles are clickbait.
Clickbait means you're offering a story on X and you give Y before the consumer can even tell (as the click generates the profit for the clickbaiter; hence "clickbait"), Y is completely impertinent to X.
The newspaper here gives a story on both a pie eating contest and a second degree murder charge, the latter just happens to be the headline. Both pictures are relevant, it's you who is getting the wrong implication by looking at the design. There's a reason why this is on /r/crappydesign and not /r/savedyouaclick.
The principle IS THE CLICK AND BAIT; THUS CLICKBAIT. CLICKING IS PART OF THE PRINCIPLE. This is not clickbait, what do you not get, it cannot be clickbait or the principle behind it because they are the same.
It's not misleading by nature, you are misleading yourself as the thing was made to do that for whatever reason they had. It's only truly misleading if there was no way of telling the content before clicking or reading the headline.
You're misusing the word completely. "Oh but it's not really this but it is this". Come on, thick skull.
It looks like a pretty standard design given the short article and the need for a lead image. I don't think I'd compare that with click bait but how would you fix it?

Yep, but make the leading "Tr" its own syllable. It's one of the more tame names in Nova Scotia. We also have Kejimkujik, Musquodoboit, and Ecum Secum. It's fun to hear tourists read the names off without knowing how they're pronounced.

I've been to Truro! I even got to see the tidal bore. A guy with bagpipes piped it in in the morning. Real fuckin annoying. The line for timmies was real long too.

There's not a lot for mining in Nova Scotia, there's a bit of mining near Halifax (main city in NS) but Nova Scotia is particularity Agriculture-based! (Apples, blueberries, etc are some if the biggest things)

I'm sorry to be a pendant and I know you're talking about Truro, but "There's not a lot of mining in Nova Scotia" anymore. While you're correct it's no longer a major industry, we have a very rich and coloured history of mining in this province. I've actually broken the line of coal miners in my family since they first arrived in Canada.
People from all over the world immigrated to Nova Scotia to work its mines. It's a major part of our history.
At one point, mining was the most important industry we had.
I'm from Glace Bay and now live in Westville (home of the Westray Mine disaster) so please forgive me if I come off too strong. I'm very proud of our mining heritage.

I'm guessing this is Truro, Massachusetts. It's named after Truro, UK, the "Capitol" (we don't use that over here) of the Duchy of Cornwall. The name comes from the Cornish Truru, meaning either "Three rivers", for the rivers that run through it, the Kenwyn and the Truro River (which splits into two); or "Tre-Uro", meaning settlement by the River Uro.
Cornwall is a great place for weird town names: Camborne, Redruth, Goonhilly, Penzance (known for the pirates), Lostwithiel, Gweek (near Temple), Zennor, and Come-to-Good (to name a few)
Despite living here all my life, I've never actually seen it.. Will dress as one at any opportunity though. This weekend is even our 'dress like a pirate' day.

I sometimes like to think half of the people living there are just the chronically unemployable lifers of Cape Breton, fed up with living in 3rd world poverty conditions, finding the ambition to leave yet still being too proud to keep going down to Halifax or Dartmouth to grow the economy there. There are news articles and studies out there showing the number of kids below the poverty line in CBRM is north of 30%.

I'd assume so. Everybody knows somebody who's gaming the system in one way or another for some benefit or way to get ahead there. Can't really blame them for it either. The whole region and province is poor, but CB stands out for it's neglect.
There aren't really "studies" more like reports done by obviously bias groups.
The study you are talking about was done by the CCPA. They used the AT- Low Income Method of measuring poverty which is a relative measure. AT-LIM defines poverty as 50% of the median wage. So this measure doesn't reflect income growth. If wages improved for everyone, this measure would still show no improvement in poverty.

I know Truro has its faults and doesn't have the best reputation but it really has improved the last few years! The town has put an emphasis on their parks, developing the downtown and promoting more cultural events. Growing up in a neighboring village we thought the same as you - because it was true. But honestly, the place has been killing it lately. The new RECC center for sports and concerts, the state of the art restored library and civic square, and of course Victoria Park.
I'd also mention that it is home of the Trailer Park Boys but that may not help my case haha. In the end, I'm not sure Truro will ever lose its reputation even after all the course correction but it is definitely putting in a good effort.
The provincial government has been killing it too, but by it, I mean Cape Breton; where a lot of the people are now desperate enough to talk about separation no matter how ridiculous the cost would be.

They dont care about cost because they dont have an income to tax.
The government turned the tar ponds into a pretty park, and the amount of coal people burned to heat their homes has dropped. It's cleaner.
The economy is still seasonal and nearly dead, a lot of it dependent on government money or Alberta work. The container port project is the best hope for the place.
I just hope the city gets it's shit together beyond kicking around studies and consulting fees, so the downtown development starts a small work boom.

Many page layout programs (there are only 2 that anybody uses professionally) have an option to not display the images while you are working, in order to save memory and generally speed things up. I would bet that is what happened here.
Getting everything to fit in a paper is kind of a pain, so you move things so many times that you stop seeing them as words.
So, you're positioning a headline that you're not really reading and images that you aren't looking at and, voila.

I work at the company that used to print this paper. We check page numbers, make sure the dates are right, and keep an eye out for low-res photos. Once we're sent the files, we don't care about content. They also recently changed the format of the paper, so they're probably not used to having such a large space to fill.
Hardly. Most small papers have a hard enough time affording reporters let alone proofreaders. Generally the set up is an Editor, one to three reporters and maybe a sports editor and possibly a sports reporter. Or possibly just and editor with a staff of a few reporters and a sports editor shared between several papers.
Why would they put the picture above the article it goes with?
Because that's generally how newspaper layout works if the picture is the same width as the article. Sometimes the headline is placed above the picture, but that is generally a house style decision.

I'm from Finland and due to many interesting turns in life I ended up dating a girl from Truro! This was in early 2000s. So I have actually lived there for 6 months. My memories of the place differ a lot from the comments seen here :D

Misleading titles are NOT clickbait. Irrelevant titles are clickbait.
Clickbait means you're offering a story on X and you give Y before the consumer can even tell (as the click generates the profit for the clickbaiter; hence "clickbait"), Y is completely impertinent to X.
The newspaper here gives a story on both a pie eating contest and a second degree murder charge, the latter just happens to be the headline. Both pictures are relevant, it's you who is getting the wrong implication by looking at the design. There's a reason why this is on /r/crappydesign and not /r/savedyouaclick.

Not really, no! Agriculture-based actually- most of rural Nova Scotia is! There's some railway stuff happening there, I'm from a farming town about a half hour away from there! There's not a lot for mining in Nova Scotia, there's a bit of mining near Halifax (main city in NS) but Nova Scotia is particularity Agriculture-based! (Apples, blueberries, etc are some if the biggest things)

I'm sorry to be a pendant and I know you're talking about Truro, but "There's not a lot of mining in Nova Scotia" anymore. While you're correct it's no longer a major industry, we have a very rich and coloured history of mining in this province. I've actually broken the line of coal miners in my family since they first arrived in Canada.
People from all over the world immigrated to Nova Scotia to work its mines. It's a major part of our history.
At one point, mining was the most important industry we had.
I'm from Glace Bay and now live in Westville (home of the Westray Mine disaster) so please forgive me if I come off too strong. I'm very proud of our mining heritage.

I'm guessing this is Truro, Massachusetts. It's named after Truro, UK, the "Capitol" (we don't use that over here) of the Duchy of Cornwall. The name comes from the Cornish Truru, meaning either "Three rivers", for the rivers that run through it, the Kenwyn and the Truro River (which splits into two); or "Tre-Uro", meaning settlement by the River Uro.
Cornwall is a great place for weird town names: Camborne, Redruth, Goonhilly, Penzance (known for the pirates), Lostwithiel, Gweek (near Temple), Zennor, and Come-to-Good (to name a few)

There are news articles and studies out there showing the number of kids below the poverty line in CBRM is north of 30%.
Whether that's being skewed for the sake of government assistance, I don't know.
I'd assume so. Everybody knows somebody who's gaming the system in one way or another for some benefit or way to get ahead there. Can't really blame them for it either. The whole region and province is poor, but CB stands out for it's neglect.

There aren't really "studies" more like reports done by obviously bias groups.
The study you are talking about was done by the CCPA. They used the AT- Low Income Method of measuring poverty which is a relative measure. AT-LIM defines poverty as 50% of the median wage. So this measure doesn't reflect income growth. If wages improved for everyone, this measure would still show no improvement in poverty.

I know Truro has its faults and doesn't have the best reputation but it really has improved the last few years! The town has put an emphasis on their parks, developing the downtown and promoting more cultural events. Growing up in a neighboring village we thought the same as you - because it was true. But honestly, the place has been killing it lately. The new RECC center for sports and concerts, the state of the art restored library and civic square, and of course Victoria Park.
I'd also mention that it is home of the Trailer Park Boys but that may not help my case haha. In the end, I'm not sure Truro will ever lose its reputation even after all the course correction but it is definitely putting in a good effort.

The government turned the tar ponds into a pretty park, and the amount of coal people burned to heat their homes has dropped. It's cleaner.
The economy is still seasonal and nearly dead, a lot of it dependent on government money or Alberta work. The container port project is the best hope for the place.
I just hope the city gets it's shit together beyond kicking around studies and consulting fees, so the downtown development starts a small work boom.

Many page layout programs (there are only 2 that anybody uses professionally) have an option to not display the images while you are working, in order to save memory and generally speed things up. I would bet that is what happened here. Getting everything to fit in a paper is kind of a pain, so you move things so many times that you stop seeing them as words. So, you're positioning a headline that you're not really reading and images that you aren't looking at and, voila. Source: was newspaper editor in college.

I work at the company that used to print this paper. We check page numbers, make sure the dates are right, and keep an eye out for low-res photos. Once we're sent the files, we don't care about content. They also recently changed the format of the paper, so they're probably not used to having such a large space to fill.

Hardly. Most small papers have a hard enough time affording reporters let alone proofreaders. Generally the set up is an Editor, one to three reporters and maybe a sports editor and possibly a sports reporter. Or possibly just and editor with a staff of a few reporters and a sports editor shared between several papers.

I went to high school, I don't currently live in that province anymore but the story I've heard from close friends that the older man was the one who was threatening him and he was protecting himself and when he realized how badly he injured the man he ripped off his shirt to try and stop the bleeding. He's a good kid who just recently lost his mother so I totally understand what he did was wrong but I hope he comes out of all this okay
