I ran track for six years, four of those in relays.

It depends on the starters hand dominance, and what relay. Typically left handed handoffs are superior in relays because you run counter clockwise on tracks, and a left handoff is closer on an inside turn. Also you naturally have your body facing the inside of the tracking during handoffs on the 400mx4 relay so you can see the runner come, which naturally means you pass with the left hand.

I'm a woman and I still have no idea. I cut mine short-ish frequently just because typing gets more difficult for me the longer they are (that and the clicking sound of nails on keys). Definitely helps when you're peeling the backing off a label, though...

Its not that its more natural to look at your non dominant wrist (it really isnt) its that the work you do with your dominant hand tends to be the heavier lifting so you can damage your watch through shock (like while using a hammer) or just whackin it off shit a lot more easily

Both my parents are right-handed. Mom was an archer so she removed all accessories from her left arm. Dad once broke his left arm, got a cast, and got used to wearing his watch on the right wrist.

So as a kid who got his first watch I just thought the right wrist is where watches went, I guess I thought strangers were weird or never even noticed them.

I do it this way 'cause my first watch was a Casio with infrared blaster.

I always thought that due to the design of this one, it was meant to be used on the right hand. (You hold it with your left hand and pushes the red power button with your left thumb, for example. If you tried to do this on the left wrist you had to be a contortionist :P )

Normally people place their watch on the non dominant wrist. That way you can use your dominant hand to press the buttons and stuff.

My dominant hand (right) is generally flat on my desk using the mouse and my left hand is using tab, shift, ctrl-c/v etc. This is why I wear my watch on my right hand. As far as 'lift' goes, my left is getting much more of it.

However, I am trying to use the numpad more, because it's faster.

Also, I'm right-handed but I wear my watch on my right wrist. It's a habit picked up from playing cello-- you can play with a watch on your bow arm, but the watch can hit the 'shoulder' of the cello if you wear it on your left wrist

The reason people wear watches on their non-dominant hand is because watches used to have to be wound, and the winder and stern were on the right side. People have been using watches for a very long time, centuries, and they would hold the watch in their left hand while winding it with the right, because 9/10 of the world is right handed.

I'm right handed too and I do this. I find it really awkward to do up a watch strap using my right hand, and I don't like the feel of it on my left wrist. Also, the winder on my favourite watch is pretty big and digs into my hand if I bend my left wrist back.

I also can't eat with a knife and fork in the correct/normal hand, I use my right hand to hold the knife.

I suppose the whole "default male" problem presents itself here, so I think it's valid to want to make one of the hands obviously female so that women feel included. It's an unfortunate fact about our society, that if something isn't explicitly female, it's assumed male, and this has the side effect of making women feel secondary to men. This is usually on the subconscious level.

Men have the same problem, where if something is explicitly female, they feel excluded as well. It's just tougher for women because "not explicitly female means male" is a far wider range of stuff.

Anyway, I don't know how important this actually is, but trying to make women feel included (who often feel excluded by default) is a legitimate thing to do.

There's better ways to do this, though:

Use subtle differences in silhouette or texture to present a male and female hand (e.g. smaller forearm vs. larger forearm plus more hair)
Use stereotypical gender signifiers that actually make sense to be on an arm (e.g. a masculine-looking watch)

If it's a workplace poster anything like my workplace posters, you must evenly distribute every single factor about the people that appear on them. Gender, race, height, weight, eye and hair colour, even clothing to a degree... everything is super finely balanced so no one can be offended.

It's another conversation on whether that's a good or bad thing, but from a design perspective I find it interesting to look for once you notice it.

In my middle school science textbook I noticed a bunch of people in wheelchairs. So I flipped through a bit of it and counted the people and exactly 50% of the people in each chapter were in wheelchairs.

If you're taking masculine and feminine as the only two things which need to be represented and therefore evenly distributed as this "designer" clearly has, one might guess the simpler way to accomplish this is by making neither hand overtly masculine or feminine. (Seems especially easy since one hand doesn't even have visible fingers.)

In fact, you could expand representation easily by making two ambiguous hands but one which is darker toned and the other white.

I doubt it's about 'equal representation' as much as it's about the apparently inescapable need to gender everything.

Line art is just art defined by the use of lines, often, but not exclusively, without nuanced value information (such as gradients).

Lines can be made of any color you want. I'm personally a fan of doing drawings with a Terra Cotta Prismacolor pencil on tan-toned paper. Those would be line art without black or white.

In my experience, the company will ask for race equality if it's global. Otherwise if it's just getting sent out to the US, they don't say anything.

One particular company I worked with was always picky (can't have a glass of wine in a photo because it promotes drinking), but never about race until we started offering our services to their global offices as well. Then it was "there are too many white ladies. it needs to be more diverse."

And they were right. Our designer at the time was a 30 year old white dude and didn't see the problem. "The photos with white women just look better." - I shit you not his response.

Anecdotal evidence, but might be an explanation.

It's in Dublin, where most people have light/white skin. Nobody thinks black people are excluded from the race, it's a non-issue. The picture says it all, it's a relay race for men and women in Dublin, it does a good job of that.

Dublin, not Berlin, it's the capital of Ireland. A quick google search tells me only ~1% of the population identify as black. Over 94% are white, making the hand black or brown simply isn't representative of the population. So if they had 20 random hands then just 1 would be 'non-white', here they only have 2.

It's simply unnecessary. If the relay-race was trying to promote racial diversification then it would make sense, but not everything is a racial statement, this is just a 1-time athletic emblem. They have not done anything wrong, they don't need correcting, forcing racial diversity into everything is awkward.

"There are plural hands therefore they need to be a distinctive races", is not a factual, logical, or morally superior statement.

I guess you're right about the only white people thing. I was mostly thinking of including the minorities and my brain just didn't connect that part where white people can also be a minority. Something something white privilege probably goes here.

I agree with you on that at least. I am actually wondering what the odds are I can get access to other countries stock photos for our global posters.

Anyway. I don't think any 1 specific item needs to include diversity. For example I make an emblem who knows what will be on it. Maybe all the people are fat. Maybe they are all Chinese.

It's more of the overall image. Across the company is every photo always white people. Well if 1/20 people aren't white then 1/20 of those should be non white to be inclusive.

And I think that should be done just because ya know, it's nice. It's not like a moral outrage or anything, but it's easy to do and doesn't hurt anyone. Like JC Penny or whatever started putting gay families into their ads at some point. They didn't have to but it was pretty cool of them to be more inclusive.

Seems like the right thing to do.

I think there's a misunderstanding because there's no context. For example if a design was made for your specific company that only employees would understand, then it wouldn't be an inherently bad design because people outside of the business don't understand it, it just wasn't created for the people outside of the company.

The fingers on the "woman's" hand are a bit suspicious. Looks as if she's all thumbs. And her wrist is in a pretty uncomfortable position - just try doing that pose with your hand. The tie hand isn't grasping the baton as much as it is hanging on for dear life.

Well they had to do that because if they just had two generic hands they'd be accused of sexism for only showing male hands.
