No, but he did have a certain amount of shows to record a day. The longer each segment takes, the longer his day, at that time, under hot studio lights. He could probably take breaks in between segments, but not during.

If she doesn't move quick enough they can just end her turn. She wasn't paying attention when he was trying to explain to her the rules, therefore he had to rush her.
Skilol · 17 points · Posted at 04:04:42 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Not from the US and never seen it. How do you not win at this? It seems they get a shitload of tries and while he's keeping up the pressure, it doesn't seem to be time capped either.
Plus, apparently they're allowed to heavily rely on audience input, so assuming the prize isn't extremely weird a whole studio audience should be able to figure it out.
Assuming the car price starts with 19, 20, or 21, there are 18 possibilities.
Skilol · 9 points · Posted at 13:03:43 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
I don't know, both the other possibilities ended with 0 and a price like 19 203 or 19 302 would be somewhat suprising, 19 032 or 19
023 even more so. And if you lock in the 0 as the last digit, it's only 6 options.
Obviously pressure gets a lot of even the best of us, so I wouldn't expect me to notice that while being on stage for the first time, but that's where just listening to the groans and cheers of the audience comes in.
It's time capped based on what they have between commercial breaks. This was back when they couldn't trim the timing easily, you still can't with live shows, but if she ran too long she'd have to forfeit her full chances of winning
He got some flak from fans and media that drew Cary shouldn't be skinny. So whether he's caving to that or putting it back on from stress or pressure, I can't say.
That's why he wore them. He actually had corrective surgery on his eyes so he didn't need them anymore, but he was completely unrecognizable without them, so he continued to wear fake glasses.

For some reason I always felt he looked a little too thin in the early 2000s, almost sickly. I haven’t seen him in ages. until just now, and it looks like he’s put on a tiny bit of weight, enough to fill his face out a bit more.

I almost posted to /r/excgarated, but I looked it up and this is an actual thing. So it’s an autocorrect mishap, not an insanely weird spelling for “familiar”.
Euthy · 735 points · Posted at 16:42:31 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
Huh, that game is interesting. If you get one or two numbers right on your first guess, you actually have a lower chance of winning than if you get 0 because you can't rule any numbers out completely.
Neat!
EDIT: Ok, someone PMed saying I'm an idiot, so let me explain.
There are 18 possible answers: 3 x 2 x 3. 645, 745, 845, 695, 795, 895, 641, 741, 841, 691, 791, 891, 640, 740, 840, 690, 790, 890
Imagine he guessed 645 initially. One number there is correct, the 6. However, he doesn't know which number was correct. So, the only answers he can eliminate are those that don't share any numbers with 645: 791, 891, 790, and 890. Any other answer could still be correct, so the space of possible answers is down only 4, from 18 to 14.
EDIT 2: Oh, and he can eliminate any answer that shares two numbers with his current answer, so he can also eliminate 640, 641, 695, 745, and 845, in addition to the original 645. So, he's actually down to 8 possible answers, but that's still better than... (thanks /u/silverdevilboy)
...if he guessed 745, where he knows no numbers are correct. So, he can eliminate any answer that shares any digits with that answer: 645, 745, 845, 695, 795, 895, 641, 741, 841, 791, 640, 740, 840, and 790 are no longer possible because if one of them was correct, he'd have at least one correct digit. So, the answer space is down to only 4 possible answers.
This is probably why he was able to win without understanding the game: because his first guess was so off, then choosing any random answer that followed the rules would give a 25% chance of winning. Since Drew ensured his answer followed the rules, he had a decent chance.

I need clarification if this is really how the game works:
The treadmill costs either $8, $78, or $678.
The lantern costs either $9 or $49.
The appliances cost either $0, $10, or $510.
Obviously this man did, but how do you manage to get any wrong in the first place? The possible prices are so far apart! I don't know what the appliances were, but I just don't understand how you could look at them and struggle between $10 or 51 times that value? Am I missing something?
The treadmill costs 678, the lantern costs 49, and the appliances cost 510 and these are all known values. What he is trying to guess is the cost of the car which is made up of the digits in the other items.

AATroop · 1 points · Posted at 04:32:34 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
This is exactly right. Its actually vaguely similar to the Monty Hall problem, where having the "wrong" answer gives you a better chance, because it eliminates one of the incorrect answers.
In the 645 example, he would also be about to eliminate the ones that shared two numbers, so 695, 745, 845, 640, and 641 (his number must only share one digit). So he actually goes from 18 to 9, but your original comment was correct.
People PMing you saying you're wrong gives me a lot more confidence about myself
j_one_k · 4 points · Posted at 21:05:34 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
You're missing a few answers that you can rule out if you get a "1 digit is correct" hint. You rule out answers with 0 correct digits, but you can also rule out answers with 2 correct digits (and 3).
yeah, but if you can handle the tax assuming you're not broke, you can then turn around and sell the car for quite a bit. not full value, but a decent chunk.
I've heard you can just negotiate a cash payout with the dealer directly, you get some cash and they keep the car
soberum · 17 points · Posted at 18:23:48 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
I dunno, u/asterioskokkinos was on lets make a deal and I think he actually lost money on the scooter he won. He said that he had to pay the taxes on it and the dealer bought it back for a fraction of the claimed MSRP resulting in him actually losing money.
Then don't sell it to the dealer for a fraction of MSRP?
[deleted] · 7 points · Posted at 19:02:41 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
In this scenario the dealer is the one who has the vehicle you won? I think you have to go to a dealer to get the vehicle? I don't know how it works though. If that's the case, though, you are better off selling it to a private party, getting it all set up and if you don't have the money crediting the taxes getting that all in order and then selling the vehicle (and immediately paying off the credit card) and pocketing the profit.
soberum · 5 points · Posted at 21:21:09 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
I think he did that because (according to him) the MSRP was double what it actually sold for, so his prize was valued at the MSRP ($4000) and he was taxed on that amount but in reality it was only worth $2000.
You'd have to be in a super high income bracket already for the tax on $4000 to be more than $2000. That also sounds like fraud on the part of the dealer.
When he pulled it all the way to Lantern I thought for sure he was fucking with Drew. But that belly-exposing leap convinced me that this man is genuine as shit
Yeah it's just not the same. Aisha is...tolerable, and sometimes funny in her own way, but her lack of real comedy chops is glaring. I don't hate her like a lot of people seem too, but she clearly got the job because she's a tv personality/host and not because of any real comedic talent.
But that said, Colin and Ryan are still there every episode, and even if they're not quite as energetic as they used to be (age will do that), seeing them work off of each other is always enjoyable.
I totally felt like this. It seemed like since old people watched it so much, it must be old too. I think Bob Barker has been 90 for 30 years. And when you're a kid, a car is a car for the most part. And we wouldn't care enough about a living room set or something to know the difference.
American game shows like having charismatic contestants, this particular show is a daytime show known for liking loud and over enthusiastic contestants
Jesus... it's literally a show about winning consumer goods, and you want to bring up "glamorizing consumption"?
Every country since the invention of modern television has had game shows that allow people to win materialistic goods. Not everything has some sort of dark undertone, people just like to win free shit sometimes. (Yes i know America taxes game show winnings)
Christ, at least someone gets it. It's a fucking game show. It's exciting in a way to watch other people win, and seeing them happy. What's so god damn horrible about that?
There's almost no skill involved, it's pure luck. The only thing that comes close to entertainment is watching other people get excited about winning desirable things that they can't afford buy for themselves.
so whats your solution? Do we eliminate game shows? Eliminate anything consumer related from all television and movies? Wait, we WATCH tv and movies ON consumer goods. WE HAVE TO CONSUME TO WATCH, WE ARE SCREWED.
now wait a minute.
I think you used either a computer or a phone to write this comment. A consumer good.
Unless you wrote this comment via pad and pencil and sent it via postal service to reddit headquarters who then transcribed it.
But what about the pencil and the pad? THOSE ARE CONSUMER GOODS.
AND HOW DID YOU READ IT IN THE FIRST PLACE??>?!?>!>
My final guess is that while you were living in the forest with no consumer goods, you developed a superhuman sense of hearing. Miles from the nearest form of civilization, I can only imagine that because of your superhuman hearing, you overheard someone discussing this comment from your tree perch.
Then, because you have been in the forest for so long with nothing but time on your hands, used your also superhuman power to then throw your voice and it carried to the nearest town, miles over, into the conversation regarding THIS VERY COMMENT and the kind gentlemen/ladies involved in the conversation then decided to quote you without credit?
THIS INJUSTICE WILL NOT STAND. FIND THESE CRIMINALS AND PROSECUTE TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.
I apologize, you must have thought due to the length of my comment that I had a vested interest in this conversation. I do not blame you. I was just bored. I dont really care what some random dude on the internet thinks about the price is right or ethical consumption.
People need to be a lot more mindful of what they're exposing themselves to, rather than mindlessly watching TV. Even these clips on Reddit are subtly encouraging you to sit down and watch next time.
I only watch TV and movies on my terms (on demand, not broadcast TV), and only when I know that it's a healthy form of entertainment. And you should too.
I agree and disagree. I agree that media sometimes has agendas. I disagree about mindlessly watching tv. I love midlessly watching tv, it helps me relax. but whatever, do you.
I also dont care enough to analyze when TV would be a healthy form of entertainment. If i wanna watch some TV, ill watch some tv. If i wanna sit outside and play with my dogs, ill do that. maybe im lazy, but i dont analyze everything. i just live
Its all propaganda, on every channel, they are called commercials. (Not to mention product placement) The Price is Right is just an entertaining commercial in between commercials.
I live in kamloops, bc and the price is right is coming to my town. I'm going to try to win tickets on the radio but if I can't I'll just buy them! I am so excited

I haven't watched Price is Right in a long time. I just happened to flip it on this morning while scrolling through the channels just in time to see this part. Didn't watch any more of the episode, it was perfect.
I asked my grandfather once, how come all the dumb people get everything and smart people have to work hard to get what they need.
"you see my son, God knows that you are smart enough to take care of yourself but he feels bad that he created stupid people and if he doesn't intervene they will surely die, so he helps them instead."
Holy fucking crap that’s drew Carey , that so weird, I’m watching all of the drew carey show seasons now , and I haven’t seen him since who line is it any way. Realizing just now that this guy is him seriously glitched my system
that cannot be drew carey. his laugh is the only giveaway of me not calling this fake. wtf happened to his face. i guess losing weight does change a person's appearance by a lot.
I don’t want to come off mean, the guy looked genuinely happy. But I really think as a society we shouldn’t make a spectacle out of mental illness or disability. That man was clearly mentally disabled.
A cousin of mine won a motorcycle years ago built by the tv show where the dad and son argued.
They valued the bike at like 350k when he got it they required him to cover its value in taxes. When he sold it he barely got enough out of it to cover the taxes.
KarmaUK · 1 points · Posted at 00:10:40 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
I'm fairly sure in the UK, if you win something it's just yours.
A bit like our lottery, the taxes are paid up front, so you can actually feel like you won.
Yeah in the US big winnings IRS gives you X days or they start charging massive interest. And it’s like 28% tax on your prize and if you get hit by interest and late fees within 90days your original bill can be doubled.
KarmaUK · 2 points · Posted at 12:32:13 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
so 'who wants to lose their home?' more than 'who wants to be a millionaire?' huh?
They built it on a TV show (OCC is the name I looked it up). And because of that the contest valued it at 350k. It was a shitty bike at that. The guy who bought it said it was way off balance and that if you didn’t park it in a garage it would tip over (luckily he was beside it to catch it.). After a few months he ended up donating it to a charity auction.
He only rode it about 50 miles and said he hurt for days. This is a guy who rode a 40s harley from Kentucky to California for some bike bike rally. And the OCC was suppose to be one of “best” bike builders in the world. If what they did to that bike is an example... they are shitty.
W452 · 1 points · Posted at 19:31:53 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
That is odd... I thought some of the best sportbikes and touring bikes purchased brand new fully loaded were in the 20 to 35 thousand dollar range.
Yeah, it's crazy. I was talking to a bike fabricator and he said not only those guys, but Jesse James is known to be average at best. He wouldn't stop talking about how the bike junior built wouldn't be very fun to ride.
Yeah. You can be that poor. That's what I meant. It's really fucked up. These people win these prizes(not money) and get stuck with the taxes at the end of the year.
KarmaUK · 1 points · Posted at 11:48:45 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
So in short, the people it would help the most, are the one who get most screwed by it.
Yeah. Pretty much. If it was cash prizes, I get it.but the fact that it's something like a $20000 car, makes it's kind of messed up. I think because it's a prize, you have to pay more taxes then usual as well. Like 40% or something. A lot of people would have a hard time paying that.

OverlordLork · 28 points · Posted at 05:43:17 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Assuming the car price starts with 19, 20, or 21, there are 18 possibilities.
Skilol · 9 points · Posted at 13:03:43 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
I don't know, both the other possibilities ended with 0 and a price like 19 203 or 19 302 would be somewhat suprising, 19 032 or 19 023 even more so. And if you lock in the 0 as the last digit, it's only 6 options.
Obviously pressure gets a lot of even the best of us, so I wouldn't expect me to notice that while being on stage for the first time, but that's where just listening to the groans and cheers of the audience comes in.
verossiraptors · 11 points · Posted at 14:08:35 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Eh, price is right actually relies on consumers perception that prices need to end in whole numbers like 0.
I just searched “Toyota dealership” and clicked the first result, and the cars end in non-zero numbers the vast majority of the time.
If anything, it’s a far safer assumption to assume it ends in 9.

It's time capped based on what they have between commercial breaks. This was back when they couldn't trim the timing easily, you still can't with live shows, but if she ran too long she'd have to forfeit her full chances of winning

Since Drew ensured his answer followed the rules, he had a decent chance.
formershitpeasant · 169 points · Posted at 22:52:45 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
The simpler way to explain it is that getting none right gives you the most information. You can definitively say that those 3 numbers are wrong.

Am I missing something?
guppygweeb · 237 points · Posted at 18:10:10 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
The treadmill costs 678, the lantern costs 49, and the appliances cost 510 and these are all known values. What he is trying to guess is the cost of the car which is made up of the digits in the other items.

In the 645 example, he would also be about to eliminate the ones that shared two numbers, so 695, 745, 845, 640, and 641 (his number must only share one digit). So he actually goes from 18 to 9, but your original comment was correct.

You're missing a few answers that you can rule out if you get a "1 digit is correct" hint. You rule out answers with 0 correct digits, but you can also rule out answers with 2 correct digits (and 3).
silverdevilboy · 3 points · Posted at 21:04:51 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
That's not right.
If there's one number right in 645, then any number with 2 or more numbers in common is also wrong.
So 641 can't be right, because at least one of the 6 and 4 are wrong.
You also eliminate 645, 641, 640, 745, 845, and 695, making there 8 options left.
Getting a 0 is better, but not by that much...

soberum · 17 points · Posted at 18:23:48 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
I dunno, u/asterioskokkinos was on lets make a deal and I think he actually lost money on the scooter he won. He said that he had to pay the taxes on it and the dealer bought it back for a fraction of the claimed MSRP resulting in him actually losing money.
fuck_off_ireland · 68 points · Posted at 18:49:24 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)

Jesus... it's literally a show about winning consumer goods, and you want to bring up "glamorizing consumption"?
Every country since the invention of modern television has had game shows that allow people to win materialistic goods. Not everything has some sort of dark undertone, people just like to win free shit sometimes. (Yes i know America taxes game show winnings)
Plashanko · 22 points · Posted at 18:08:42 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
Christ, at least someone gets it. It's a fucking game show. It's exciting in a way to watch other people win, and seeing them happy. What's so god damn horrible about that?
pelirrojo · -9 points · Posted at 20:33:40 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
There's almost no skill involved, it's pure luck. The only thing that comes close to entertainment is watching other people get excited about winning desirable things that they can't afford buy for themselves.
It's totally propaganda.
jimboknows6916 · 5 points · Posted at 21:16:31 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
so whats your solution?

Lol.

If i wanna sit outside and play with my dogs, ill do that. maybe im lazy, but i dont analyze everything. i just live

I asked my grandfather once, how come all the dumb people get everything and smart people have to work hard to get what they need.
"you see my son, God knows that you are smart enough to take care of yourself but he feels bad that he created stupid people and if he doesn't intervene they will surely die, so he helps them instead."

Never listen to the crowd. They always fuck up people. When they go "awwww" it's because they got it wrong as well.

This post makes me angry, I can't hear shit and had to blast the volume with my ear next to the speaker to even hear a mumble.

Nuclearpolitics · 1 points · Posted at 08:58:22 on January 29, 2018 · (Permalink)
I don’t want to come off mean, the guy looked genuinely happy. But I really think as a society we shouldn’t make a spectacle out of mental illness or disability. That man was clearly mentally disabled.

Some people are winning $16,000. I just want some Wendy's chicken strips
[deleted] · 1 points · Posted at 01:50:49 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
I had those for the first time this week. They don't look particularly appetizing, but they were actually pretty good! Worth trying once, anyway.
bagels_for_everyone · 1 points · Posted at 22:38:02 on October 27, 2017 · (Permalink)
Fuck that show. Winning is probably the worse thing that can happen to you. So much paperwork and taxes.
KarmaUK · 1 points · Posted at 00:00:20 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
If the prizes are worth more than your hourly wage in paperwork, I would have thought go for it.
However, I've heard about this taxes on prizes thing.
Can you be so poor that you win on a gameshow and can't afford to win a prize? Because there's something wrong with that.
truckerslife · 2 points · Posted at 00:04:52 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yea you can be.
A bit like our lottery, the taxes are paid up front, so you can actually feel like you won.
truckerslife · 1 points · Posted at 00:22:48 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah what’s bad is these shows have to pay taxes on the items they give away and the winner does as well.
KarmaUK · 1 points · Posted at 11:48:03 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Sounds like double fuckery to me.
Our 'millionaire' quiz show was £1m tax free. Our lottery, you pay tax on your ticket, not on the winnings.
truckerslife · 2 points · Posted at 11:50:13 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah in the US big winnings IRS gives you X days or they start charging massive interest. And it’s like 28% tax on your prize and if you get hit by interest and late fees within 90days your original bill can be doubled.
KarmaUK · 2 points · Posted at 12:32:13 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
so 'who wants to lose their home?' more than 'who wants to be a millionaire?' huh?
truckerslife · 2 points · Posted at 12:48:05 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Kinda like I said in another comment a cousin won a motorcycle and had to sell it. It barely sold for enough to pay the taxes on it.
W452 · 1 points · Posted at 03:06:00 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
What kind of motorcycle costs $350,000?
truckerslife · 1 points · Posted at 10:32:21 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
I thought some of the best sportbikes and touring bikes purchased brand new fully loaded were in the 20 to 35 thousand dollar range.
truckerslife · 1 points · Posted at 20:29:47 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
The company built these custom bikes. Way over priced for what they are.
bagels_for_everyone · 1 points · Posted at 21:06:11 on October 30, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah, it's crazy. I was talking to a bike fabricator and he said not only those guys, but Jesse James is known to be average at best. He wouldn't stop talking about how the bike junior built wouldn't be very fun to ride.
bagels_for_everyone · 1 points · Posted at 00:11:39 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah. You can be that poor. That's what I meant. It's really fucked up. These people win these prizes(not money) and get stuck with the taxes at the end of the year.
KarmaUK · 1 points · Posted at 11:48:45 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
So in short, the people it would help the most, are the one who get most screwed by it.
bagels_for_everyone · 2 points · Posted at 20:40:45 on October 28, 2017 · (Permalink)
Yeah. Pretty much. If it was cash prizes, I get it.but the fact that it's something like a $20000 car, makes it's kind of messed up. I think because it's a prize, you have to pay more taxes then usual as well. Like 40% or something. A lot of people would have a hard time paying that.

Is this show fake? Like do people actually win stuff or is it all an act? Everyone seems way too happy to be there, I’m not even talking about the contestants, I mean the audience. They’re freaking out just as much as the contestants are and they’re not even winning anything.
