Well the comic is obviously a generalization, but we're def approaching to a state where cheap hedonism has completely taken over people's lives, and that makes us easier to control. We start rejecting responsibility, and then we stop being INTERESTED in things, because what we want is the fast reward, so all we care about is how to get that reward again.

For example, it's kinda like when a drug dealer, whose whole purpose is to get you hooked on the drug he is selling. He first sells you the pure thing, but then he adds other substances that increase the effect of the withdrawal, making you feel physically sick if you don't take another dosis. So then you want to buy more, and more drugs, every day. That's when junkies start selling everything they have on the living so they can get funds for their addictions. Some junkies claim that they feel like "they're going to die" if they don't get the drug quick (and depends on the drug too).

The way I see it, that's the consoomer is a dangerous type of people, because they'll keep working to stay inside their comfort zone, ratting on people, whining about "radicals", and keep giving their energy in exchange for instant gratifications. The same way as the batteries from Matrix as you put it.
