Copying anime/manga can indeed stunt your artistic growth. It's not a good idea to learn a style before you learn the basics of shapes and anatomy, so you can make things harder for yourself by trying to run before you can walk. But it's not like it ruins you forever. It's a speed bump at worst, if you're willing to work at it. I remember a lot of that when I was following his stuff. He'd say something I'd agree with or at very least understand his perspective on, then he'd just keep going with it until I couldn't agree/understand anymore. I unwatched him after he started saying offensive stuff, though it has been years now so I don't remember exactly what it was he said.
(I think the example they use for his copy+paste is unfair though. There are plenty of his comics that could be used for that, but that one in particular was meant to be a low effort side thing. His previous comic had the same setting, and people were confused about the "magical changing picture frame" that was meant to be a TV. He made the comic that page uses as an example as a quick joke response, not meant to be a main comic. Even though he deserves the criticism, that's not the right comic to use as an example.)

Definitely! I think it's stupid to hate something just because it's mainstream. Often things are popular BECAUSE they're so good. Plus, by refusing to enjoy anything that the mainstream likes, you're still letting the mainstream dictate what you enjoy. But I also think there is legitimacy to the idea that art can drop in quality (at least from the perspective of people who liked it before it was popular) as more people start to consume it.

It's pretty awful and boring, but no, you can't say it's objectively bad because bad is always a matter of opinion. I'd argue until I'm purple that it's all shit, though.
More specifically, they sacrifice whatever niche appeal they had. It might be more appealing to everyone on average, but it won't be particularly great for anyone. I don't like Taylor Swift, but I can stand her more than thrash metal. On the other hand, I love triphop, which does some weird things that a lot of people might not get, but those elements are what I like about it.
Oh yeah, thatโs definitely the case. Things designed to be appealing to everyone are really only going to be truly enjoyed by a small population of very lucky idiots. The rest of us have one or two things we can like about it and have to be satisfied with that, or go digging for more specific stuff. Most of the media that I truly love in this world has so little mainstream appeal that itโs usually not even worth bringing up to people who I donโt know very well.

I watch, like, zero anime and I don't read manga, but I don't understand how it's possible to dislike an entire medium like that. It's like saying you don't like music made by a 5 person band. The variance is just too damn wide for that to be possible.

Y'know, his art style is similar to amateur manga in this. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not.
I also sort of want to create a response comic to this saying that anime and manga aren't genres, but simply a medium to tell stories in. Thinking of my favorite anime, they're all vastly different genres. Soul Eater is fantasy action with a Halloween theme, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a dark take on magical girls, Pop Team Epic is a skit comedy, Panty and Stocking is crude action with a bit of magical girl thrown in there, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is fantasy slice of life, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is... it's something, alright. It's something and I fucking love it.
I find the more popular anime to be not very good. I used to watch Naruto with my brother back when he didn't hate me and I never truly liked it. It just felt dumb. However, we got into Soul Eater after that and we both loved it. It drew us in and it felt less like a product and more like a thing made with passion and love.

There were a few animes that were popular outside of Japan and leaked into mainstream like Candy Candy, Mazinger Z, Dragon Ball Z, Pokรฉmon, Sailor Moon and all of the big 3 Shounen of the 2000โs
It's gotten very popular in a lot of Asian countries, places like Singapore and Malaysia for example. In recent years, at least. Like you don't have to consider yourself an anime fan here to watch anime, some people just watch it casually like any other show.
To an extent, it's not that "weird interest" like it used to be. You'll even notice more anime shops have been opening in malls, and related events/conventions are hosted much more frequently.

Unpopular opinion, and a stupid tangent unrelated to the comic, but I believe there's some truth on the idea that the more popular something is, the worse it becomes. Not because it's mainstream, but because the creators try to appeal to a wider audience and often ruin whatever I enjoyed about it in the first place.

Definitely! I think it's stupid to hate something just because it's mainstream. Often things are popular BECAUSE they're so good. Plus, by refusing to enjoy anything that the mainstream likes, you're still letting the mainstream dictate what you enjoy. But I also think there is legitimacy to the idea that art can drop in quality (at least from the perspective of people who liked it before it was popular) as more people start to consume it.

More specifically, they sacrifice whatever niche appeal they had. It might be more appealing to everyone on average, but it won't be particularly great for anyone. I don't like Taylor Swift, but I can stand her more than thrash metal. Oh yeah, thatโs definitely the case. Things designed to be appealing to everyone are really only going to be truly enjoyed by a small population of very lucky idiots. The rest of us have one or two things we can like about it and have to be satisfied with that, or go digging for more specific stuff. Most of the media that I truly love in this world has so little mainstream appeal that itโs usually not even worth bringing up to people who I donโt know very well.

Y'know, his art style is similar to amateur manga in this. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not.
I also sort of want to create a response comic to this saying that anime and manga aren't genres, but simply a medium to tell stories in. Thinking of my favorite anime, they're all vastly different genres. Soul Eater is fantasy action with a Halloween theme, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a dark take on magical girls, Pop Team Epic is a skit comedy, Panty and Stocking is crude action with a bit of magical girl thrown in there, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is fantasy slice of life, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is... it's something, alright. It's something and I fucking love it.
I find the more popular anime to be not very good. I used to watch Naruto with my brother back when he didn't hate me and I never truly liked it. It just felt dumb. However, we got into Soul Eater after that and we both loved it. It drew us in and it felt less like a product and more like a thing made with passion and love.

It's gotten very popular in a lot of Asian countries, places like Singapore and Malaysia for example. In recent years, at least. Like you don't have to consider yourself an anime fan here to watch anime, some people just watch it casually like any other show.
To an extent, it's not that "weird interest" like it used to be. You'll even notice more anime shops have been opening in malls, and related events/conventions are hosted much more frequently.
