I always think of it as, Tumblr you have to go out of your way to see a lot of different content (since you have to manually follow people each time) and Reddit you have to go out of your way to see only very specific types of content (by unsubscribing from default subs and subscribing to only small specific subs, etc)

In a way they're opposites.
