The next year will have at least 365 days: a lot of other days besides January 1st to meet on. Maybe one expects to see the other person only on the next New Year's Eve, like a waiter in some resort where one traditionally spends New Year's Eve or something like that.
My sisters literally do this every single new years eve. Then two seconds after the new year they will both text me "You haven't talked to me all year!!!!!!!!" Every. Year.
