I'm of the opinion that life is life, even if it is green and leafy and that it is a rather tragic irony that the basic laws that hold our universe together require that any one life of any degree of complexity can only exist thanks to the sacrifice of numerous others, of whatever sort.
As far as I'm concerned almost all my food comes from dead bodies of one kind or another but that's just the way it has to be, so I eat what I want as long as I'm satisfied about the conditions it was raised in, be it animal, plant or fungus.
I really don't understand the point of veganism at all.

However, even if you do think that plants deserve just as much life as animals, remember that to food the animals requires the death of plants. If you think about energy transfers in the food chain then you know that nowhere near 100% of energy is transferred to growth in each trophic level. Most of the energy that animals get from eating plants will be used for movement, generating heat, or in excretion and egestion. We will not directly get this energy from eating meat and thus we will have to eat more animals, meaning more plants will have to be killed to feed the animals. If we eat plants directly, then we remove one of the trophic levels in the food chain and thus the overall energy transfer from the sun to us is more efficient, and less plants have to die.
Like it or not, a very large majority of animals and animal products come from animals in poor conditions (for example, 97% of pigs in the U.S. are raised in factory farms). This may not be true for you, but I personally do not consider factory farms to be conditions that I would be satisfied for animals to be killed in, and because a most meat comes from factory farms I do not eat meat. Obviously, you may have different morals to me and that's totally fine. At the end of the day, whichever lifestyle you follow is your choice, but I'm just trying to show how veganism may have a point.
I'm not in the US. I do not buy food (or pretty much anything else, really) from the US. How farms or abattoirs are run in the US has no impact on my diet whatsoever.

If you can't photosynthesis you are probably killing something in order to survive. I've heard a deer can feed a family for a while. But these vegetarians slaughter a whole community of plants for a single meal.
Even if you can photosynthesise you're going to need organic material from somewhere if you want to grow and there's only one real source for that on our world...decomposed dead things. You might not kill them yourself but they needed to die for you to live.

The idea of veganism (in general, individuals have their own reasons) is that one shouldn't cause unnecessary suffering to animals. I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, but that's what I've heard from the one's i've talked to. Under actual veganism, if you have to eat animal products to survive, you can do so. At that point the question becomes, what is a sufficient reason to cause animals a given amount of suffering?
