You know that's the origin of the word right? To troll online is to say something stupid or inflammatory and slowly troll through the waters until someone takes the bait.
My original comment was referring to how kids use "to troll" in real life as a replacement for "to joke", for example, and carry with it the meaning it has online. You're correct, though, I could've expressed myself better.

That's not unrelated at all though, it's a minorly incorrect usage of the word, and if the kid in the post wasn't clearly just trying to save face then it would be correct usage.
Kid is probably about 8 years old tbh. It's just that now with the internet being so ubiquitous, those kinds of shit jokes that would usually be reserved for our parents are now open to scrutiny from the many thousands of people on the internet.
