Policeman charging wildly through the garden, leaping fences and rolling under trampolines in hot pursuit of an offender. Meanwhile, his dog is galloping around with a football in his mouth wanting to play!
Me too, there's something really adorable about it.
And then the policeman filling out his form over the bonnet of his car exasperated at how ridiculous the entire thing is. Dog sitting on the passenger seat with the ruined ball hanging out of his mouth looking like a dog that's destroyed a ball.
Policeman comes back after stress leave, his captain says "YOU'RE A LOOSE CANNON, WE'RE PUTTING YOU TOGETHER WITH A PARTNER!"
Adorable.

I used to work opposite a big police station where they kept a load of dogs. Used to see them in some of the local park areas getting to have a big play as a treat for a successful mission
My old dog was bred by the police. Handsome but could be a hyperactive, barking, pulling little cunt, but an incredible sweetheart most of the time.
My parents got him because they worked for the police at the time and the dog squad owed my stepdad. So they got him from a new litter.
A few years later, we found out all his litter had been let go from the police and rehomed. They all were too friendly, too hyperactive, too aggressive, or, in one case, couldn't go up floating staircases (you know, the ones with no backs to the steps).
From the sounds of it, our dog was the best of the bunch, but still wouldn't have made it, too strong-willed.
Holska ยท 26 points ยท Posted at 01:11:00 on February 13, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
The floating staircase one got me. Can you imagine the debrief where they discussed what went wrong with the litter- โhe was a great dog, but his mistrust of modern architecture really let him downโ
I think I may have had a German Shepherd from that litter. Kicked out of the force for being too friendly. I was a tot and learnt how to walk by holding on to her tail or pulling myself up on her. Wouldnโt ever settle for a nap in my bed but the dog bed had me out like a light if she was there.
She was insanely protective of the family too. Once my aunt took me for a trip to the shop and she jumped the fence and followed the car there and back.
I'd like to think so. God knows that sounds like somethings he would have done. He was insanely protective as well. I remember my (now) wife and I were just playing about, kind of wrestling, he thought I was doing something bad and shoved his way in between us, defending her against me. He wasn't being aggressive or anything, just a kind of "I wouldn't if I was you" kind of thing. He got a massive hug for that.
He also once was ready to defend my mother on a walk. Some wee cunts were acting up across the road, took notice of my mother and the dog and he immediately went in to defense mode. Hackles up, growling and everything. They quickly backed down after that.
My dog gets blamed for most of the messes I make in my house and the farts.
The beauty of it is, she doesn't speak English so she's incapable of defending herself when my girlfriend is complaining about how smelly the dog is when's it's actually me.
meanwhile in canada police illegally ran a dog search across my property and when i asked them what they were doing they told me to stfup and there lucky there dogs had not hurt any of my animals because my farm animals were not caged
My mum got me a signed football of the 1998 Man Utd squad, had Sir Alex, Becks, Giggs and all the rest. I was a Chelsea fan and 10 yrs old, so I took it for a kick about in Clapham Common. Kicking myself now though.
Kicked it around for a bit and it got pretty muddy and scratched from the pathways around the park. Think it went flat shortly after. Most of the names had been scuffed off by the time I was done. Probably would've been worth a good amount had I been less dense, or a United fan... Think there's an oxymoron there though.
To all Americans about to comment about the quaintness of Britain and to draw comparisons to Americas more belligerent police culture; Iโd like to point out the note is from the Avon and Somerset Police Constabulary. Thatโs the West Country in England. Iโd wager itโs probably one of the safest and friendliest areas of the country and so this is less surprising. OP most likely lives in a small town or village or possibly in Bath or Bristol.
You would be less likely to see something like this from the Metropolitan Police Service or The City of London Police.
EDIT: just to clear I have nothing against any police especially not The Met - I was just trying to highlight that not all cops would have the time or inclination to leave a note about a 50p football.
EDIT: shout out to u/wilmarooney. Heโs showed me up!
The suspect in question was being chased following not paying for a 20p biscuit at the church fete. Reverand George and the congragation were out for blood.
Sorry, should have been more specific. They donโt know how to unload the mag when it wasnโt in the gun. Like pushing the cartridges out of the magazine. They had to call for help, it wasnโt a duty weapon (to be fair, but it wasnโt some obscure mag either) and it had a slight bit of damage but nothing that should have prevented unloading.
Pardon me, but No we fucking don't.
I'm a police trainer. Never taught nor been taught 'de-escalation'.
It's some weird bullshit the media thought up.
I've been in for 16 years now and it's never happened.
We just police by consent and that brings a culture with it.
I have always always been taught words first, hands last.
It's common bloody sense.
derawin07 ยท 45 points ยท Posted at 21:14:56 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
You might want to try some de-escalation training there, mate. Coming on a bit aggessive! :P
I acquiesque to your greater knowledge. It kept being referenced in articles about US policing that US forces would do well to implement the de-escalation training that is used in the UK. So I wasn't just pulling it out of my ass, it is getting referenced in the American literature.
Its like a lot of things.
Someone invented it and it keeps being quoted baselessly over and over.
SkipsH ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 22:53:59 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
If you were taught in a words first, hand last manner. Surely that could be considered de-escalation training? As in the training you are provided equips you to de-escalate situations rather than go in swinging?
Like there may not be a "De-escalation" lesson, but if all lessons are taught in a way that means that making stuff less bad is a priority, then all training is de-escalation training?
Adding a term to it ten years after it existed, seems frivolous and ubecassary.
Especially when it is already both law and policy.
SkipsH ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:00:03 on February 13, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I mean that's fair enough, but that's just language. I get that in this case it probably has political createdness, but humans just try to assign simple terms to complex ideas.
Not really. It's part and parcel of the use of force training.
Takin a single sentence or principle and calling it something it's not, is misleading. That's what bullshit media outlets do. Not rational intelligent adults.
NePa5 ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 22:41:13 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Keep in mind US cops are taught the same. They also have a 'use of force continuum' denoting what police can and can't do in certain situations which they take very seriously and police are always encouraged to communicate first.
The big thing about US police, especially those you see in videos of shootings, is that they're often cops that patrol bad gang infested neighborhoods chasing people that have or could very likely have guns, have been called about people having guns, etc. When a gun is involved your life can end in less than a second so US cops are reacting to aggression/suspicious behavior accordingly. The culture and criminal culture is also overall different, with people refusing to surrender, cooperate, or even listen to police in the US much more often than in the UK thus more often necessitating some amount of force.
For US cops there's simply no way to know whether the guy that's saying "Nah, nah" and walking away when you wanna talk to them is about to take out a gun and kill them or whether they're just your average Joe not liking police. They gotta be ready for both. In the UK cops can be much more sure about the person not being such an extreme imminent threat though so they have many more passive/friendly options.
You can even see that within the UK a bit when you compare police from certain nice rural areas and the Met (which is exactly what some threads in this post are about): The Met isn't as friendly and nice as some of the others. America is like that but ramped up even more. Not just because of the police or their training but because of the general state of affairs.
Every time something like this comes up I remember this video which shows how something you'd consider super safe/unrelated to crime can escalate tremendously. If it's too long, you can watch from 24:30 to 27:00 - essentially what happened is that a guy passed out in a bus and emergency services were called to save his life. After they managed to bring him back the video starts at 24:30 with police explaining to the man he will die if he doesn't go to a hospital. A firefighter died that day because the cops weren't 'attentive' enough.
I have always always been taught words first, hands last.
There should be a term for this.
Defcon_4 ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 23:37:27 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I know nothing, this is purely my assumption.
Iโm guessing what they mean is that police in the UK are taught to calm down a situation, whereas Iโve read on here people in the US saying their police are taught to escalate a situation to a level the suspects are not comfortable with, with the idea being that they give in to superior force.
I presume part of UK police training is how to calm down a suspect going on a mad one?
No, it's not though.
We aren't taught any specific things calm people down.
I don't k ow where this comes from.
We are taught that when it is safe to do so, use communications skills.
Where no alternative exists, go hands on.
As an instructor, I've never seen a lesson for 'how to calm people down'.
I hope I never do, because after 16 years of being a beat cop, that would be a wasted lesson.
Defcon_4 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:46:46 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I guess it just comes from not being taught to point a loaded gun in the face of an unarmed civilian and scream at them to get on the ground then ๐
I think that is the big difference.
I have no idea how things are taught to American cops.
But our basic model of policing is by consent. The community are the police and the police are the community.
Secondly, because we don't really do guns here, there is significantly less risk of being shot, so we can ease off a little.
Third, there are wayyy less of us.
If you corner a fucker and he pulls a big old knife, you've either got to be good at the old kung-pow, or talk until help gets there / they give up.
You arenโt from America are ya? Because thatโs not really true at all. Gotta watch what you read, our media would have one thinking the UK is full of terrorists running around bombin stuff but we both know that ainโt true.
Yeah that doesnโt really happen. Quit drinking the koolaide and worry about your own country. Weโll worry about ours. Also not hating the police isnโt โbootlickingโ itโs just being a decent sensible citizen.
Eat a dick commie. You lick more boots automatically by simply living in Europe. People get arrested for speech over there and you have little grasp of freedoms, especially self defense. You had to fight off a terrorist with a narwhal tusk because the state has you under their heel. Told you to worry about your own country and weโll worry about ours.
Maybe you shouldnโt have started shitting on someone elseโs country while you have just as many issues then...

In the US the note would read:
Police officer chased a suspect through your garden, was forced to shoot your dog because it looked at him in a funny way. Please contact us to arrange payment of compensation to our officer for mental distress.
freeeeels ยท 31 points ยท Posted at 19:30:16 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Yeah but in the states they blew up a guy's house because a completely unrelated guy was hiding inside and he was armed with a really dangerous belt.
And then offered him something like 8 grand to โfixโ it. Itโs not the note or situation thatโs shocking, itโs the fact that compensation is even an option.
Erm, that's not true. Whilst the Met is very, very busy, we do have time to do things like this. My mate's GP dog walked off with a pair of socks once and my mate paid for a new pair and returned them.
Thanks for the clarification. This note made me consider something that happened recently in Arkansas. In my old hometown in the US, there was a string of police raids on houses and apartments. All of the raids were started by an informant who was making up information in order to stay out of jail. No one raided was doing what they were accused of. Most of them were doing nothing illegal.
Despite that, the police refused to reimburse anyone for the destroyed front door, or any other damages caused. There were several people made homeless because their landlords kicked them out. "If you're the sort of person who gets the cops kicking the door in, then I don't want you here." And then the landlords went after the now former tenants for the house damages.
Was an utter nightmare. This little note about the punctured football made UK police seem absolutely wonderful by comparison to the utter barbarity we have here in the states. Glad, but also not glad, to know this note is somewhat of an exception in the UK too.
Welll... I would have to say that this may be an exception but if what you described happened here I imagine it would be front page news.
We really have decent police here and we generally respect and admire them because they do a good job. When they fail at something itโs usually because theyโre overstretched and underfunded but yeh I theyโre pretty good. Theyโre considerate and theyโre trained to talk to people and de-escalate

If we put the doors in on the basis of a warrant then we wonโt pay out either, even if the information subsequently turns out to be wrong.
It sucks to be the householder, but itโs a matter of public policy.
And those stories are why some Europeans consider the US to be a nightmarish warzone with no civil rights and no regards for human lives.
I mean, the people are lovely, the landscape is fantastic and the food is great (if sometimes a bit much) - but you guys really need a clean break, a governmental overhaul to bring you to the 21st century and a quiet lesson in respecting fellow humans.
I was about to mention this. As a proud Devonian, I can safely say that this is a very typical West Country police officer thing to do - think Harrison from The Archers. However, I must mention that whenever I talk to police officers from other areas, London, Manchester etc they seem equally as pleasant and lovely.

There was once an amazing episode of โitโs a fair copโ on radio 4 called The Wrath of Zeus about comedian (previously a police officer) Alfie Mooreโs police dog - Its not on the BBC site anymore sadly, but is on audible apparently!
But if anyone ever heard it - in my head this dog is that dog & it is wonderful!!
If youโve not heard it I really recommend it!
The funny thing is that, if they caused damage which would cost more to fix, there wouldn't be compensation offered. You'd have to take them to court haha
In the US the officer would have shot some poor neighborhood dog barking at all the noise and then taken the toy for his own under civil asset forfeiture.
Refreshing. US cops would have shot your football and dog. and let their dog maul you while chasing a perp through your yard and then send you a bill for the whole thing

Here in the states, the police charge through your yard and usually shoot your dog and then sue you for the dog's blood getting on their shoes as they go by.
Damn! Guess I should start keeping a cheapo nerf football on my person at all times in case I'm ever being chased by a police dog I can use it to distract them!
If I was a copper I'd love to fill a form out like this, I'd wish you had CCTV too so I could send it to my mates...
High speed pursuit but echo (that's what I'd call my K-9 ) got momentarily distracted by cheap football, after decimating the threatening ball we apprehended the suspect.
Cue 5 mins of cctv of me and k9 playing headers and volleys.
Once when my bike was stolen the police apprehended the thief (excellent) but crushed my bike in the process (not excellent). I didnโt realise I couldโve asked for compensation.
My mumโs neighbour panicked when she hadnโt seen her for a few days and the car was parked in the drive, so she called the police who broke a window to get in and find that she was not in fact dead on the floor but was visiting us after taking a taxi to the station. She was very annoyed that no compensation was offered either by the police or the neighbour! (And yes, I tried the โbut itโs great that they careโ line but it didnโt go down well.

Sod the compensation I'd be happy the work dog had fun. Although I'm assuming he was just wanting to play. Maybe he attacked it menacingly and it wasnt playful but in my head it is
Once made a den in the woods in town park - we went all out. Brought old spades and tools to make said den. Got there one day and our tools had gone. Note from police saying something alone the lines of "cool den, but we had to take your tools as they could be weapons"....But cool den right?
And yet they take my shirt to test for DNA from a criminal who'd touched it, tell me I'll get it back, and after being exceedingly unhelpful in my quest to get it back, eventually just tell me it was destroyed during the test and that was it...
I donโt claim that itโs exclusively American, but the majority of people using this site are American, and the people Iโve seen use the ACAB nonsense are Americans.
Meanwhile here in America police can pretty much blow up your house if they suspect a criminal is hiding in it and then proceed to refuse to compensate for damages. Even when the suspect was found to have never entered the house.
Our police are godawful.
steve_gus ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 22:32:33 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
This is BS. My friends stolen car was rammed off the road by the police to catch the perps and the damage was his problem not northamptonshire police
Whoa your police actually pay for that stuff? In my state in America the cops just blew the wrong guys house up and when he asked for reparations the judge told him to go fuck himself. I wish I was exaggerating that. They blew his entire house up, realized it was the wrong place, and just left.
I love that the police donโt have time to tackle the swathes of crime and grooming gangs etc but they do have time to deliver compensation forms and hand-written notes for burst 50p footballs.
I mean, if the dog unit has been chasing someone, probably takes about 20 seconds to write a note and leave it there on the way back....
And if you think a dog unit is going to be the one investigating grooming gangs, we have very different ideas on what that sort of investigation entails.

Can you imagine the debrief where they discussed what went wrong with the litter- โhe was a great dog, but his mistrust of modern architecture really let him downโ
sweetlittlespitfire ยท 24 points ยท Posted at 22:33:41 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
StormRider2407 ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 23:22:05 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
As much of a handful he was, I miss that pup :(
Meanttobepracticing ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 05:14:17 on February 13, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

Kicked it around for a bit and it got pretty muddy and scratched from the pathways around the park. Think it went flat shortly after. Most of the names had been scuffed off by the time I was done.

I acquiesque to your greater knowledge. It kept being referenced in articles about US policing that US forces would do well to implement the de-escalation training that is used in the UK. So I wasn't just pulling it out of my ass, it is getting referenced in the American literature.
Enjoy your day off!

-brownsherlock- ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:13:35 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
-brownsherlock- ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:19:56 on February 13, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
That I understand. But it's so inaccurate. I just don't agree that it counts as de-escalation training. It's incorrect in both words.
freexe ยท 13 points ยท Posted at 21:21:30 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

-brownsherlock- ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:43:39 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
I guess it just comes from not being taught to point a loaded gun in the face of an unarmed civilian and scream at them to get on the ground then ๐
-brownsherlock- ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:51:10 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

BenLaParole ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 21:17:40 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)

I was about to mention this. As a proud Devonian, I can safely say that this is a very typical West Country police officer thing to do - think Harrison from The Archers. However, I must mention that whenever I talk to police officers from other areas, London, Manchester etc they seem equally as pleasant and lovely.

Damn that's nice. In America they would have shot the football for good measure and just kept going.
Dinorider89 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:49:26 on February 13, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
In the US the officer would have shot some poor neighborhood dog barking at all the noise and then taken the toy for his own under civil asset forfeiture.
BananaDictator29 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:54:12 on February 13, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Refreshing. US cops would have shot your football and dog. and let their dog maul you while chasing a perp through your yard and then send you a bill for the whole thing

Here in the states, the police charge through your yard and usually shoot your dog and then sue you for the dog's blood getting on their shoes as they go by.
EarlFaustian ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 20:11:27 on February 12, 2020 ยท (Permalink)
Meanwhile in the U.S, the police can destroy your house trying to get a suspect and you get no compensation.

High speed pursuit but echo (that's what I'd call my K-9 ) got momentarily distracted by cheap football, after decimating the threatening ball we apprehended the suspect.
Cue 5 mins of cctv of me and k9 playing headers and volleys.

My mumโs neighbour panicked when she hadnโt seen her for a few days and the car was parked in the drive, so she called the police who broke a window to get in and find that she was not in fact dead on the floor but was visiting us after taking a taxi to the station. Meanwhile here in America police can pretty much blow up your house if they suspect a criminal is hiding in it and then proceed to refuse to compensate for damages. Even when the suspect was found to have never entered the house.
Our police are godawful.

I mean, if the dog unit has been chasing someone, probably takes about 20 seconds to write a note and leave it there on the way back....
And if you think a dog unit is going to be the one investigating grooming gangs, we have very different ideas on what that sort of investigation entails.
