It would be interesting to learn that most ghosts know and realize a person with a camera is nearby taking pictures. Like it knew full well that if it was photographed people can finally see it. It could then be like a last attempt at being recognized as a 'living' figure, though in an entirely different form. Either their trying to tell people that 'Hey! We still exist!' or they just really like messing with the photographer's heads.

Maybe it doesn't exist.

Maybe the photographer wouldn't notice anomalies that don't have faces.

And, in the rare occasions they appear in photographs surrounded by people, somehow only the magic of photography captured them and the mass of people didn't see a damned thing.

I'm not a ghost-believer, but I am a photographer, so I wanted to point out that film strips (or sensors, in digital photography) are much more sensitive than the human eye. They can pick up things that we can't see, then "convert" them (can't really think of a better word without getting technical) into visible wavelengths that we can. This is how stuff like infrared photography or thermal vision goggles work. So, it's entirely possible for something to show up in a photograph that nobody present could see.

e: So looks like I'm wrong-ish on this: while film/sensors can pick up non-visible light, it's unlikely that those frequencies will make it into a photo unless you're specifically trying to cause it to. Sorry guys, I guess ghosts aren't real after all.

But if you take a picture in Times Square of a bunch of people, you don't notice as easily who was there when you took the pic, and who appeared in the pic afterwards. If you take one in your front yard of four people, and five people show up in the pic, you're much more likely to notice.

One theory, if I recall correctly, is that ghosts arenot just echo's of past lives. So the lives of so many people walking through times square would overpower any echo's that might be there.

It's like sound... if you go to an empty warehouse and yell, there will be a distinct echo. If you go to a busy warehouse with lots of machines running, the other nose will drown out an echo.

Not that I believe in ghosts, per say, but it is a theory.

Wouldn't a ghost blend in with everybody else in times square? I feel like if they do exist, they're probably in a lot more pictures than we suspect. The ones that stick out though, are the ones where they're by themselves, since there is nothing to disguise them.

Now I'm no believer in the supernatural but I certainly think that there is stuff we can't explain whether we don't have the technology or what not, it's something new we haven't figured out, but I know during reiki sessions, my teacher who just got a doctorate in microbiology takes pictures and videos and there are auras or "orbs" as they call them all over the place and there is no other explanation for them. All the things you mention have equal retorts if coming from a believer. If this stuff is by chance real, we know virtually nothing about it and assigning rules from our experience seems as appropriate as talking about Mars as if it were Earth.

For instance, what if the reason the ghosts are looking directly at the camera ends up being that they are aware they are being observed and are simply looking at who, or what(camera), is looking at them.

If subatomic particles can tell that they are being observed, even if it's just by a camera, why couldn't ghosts? Heck, even some of us meat bags can tell intuitively when we are being watched.

If ghosts actually existed, there'd be loads of them, and we'd all know about it.

In Islamic theology, ghosts aren't actually spirits of the dead but a separate species of creature called Jinn that occupy a different light spectrum than what people can see under normal circumstances. These jinn actually hate the smell of humans but love living in human dwellings, thus the reason why they are found in abandoned places and try to scare people out of their "homes".

What if Ghost are just time travelers, and you cannot actually physically travel in time but you can "project" yourself back?

I don't believe in ghosts, but I once had a friend who claimed to see spirits and communicate with them and whatnot. She insisted that there were ghosts everywhere, but since people don't look for them in public, they don't see them there.

She was a bit weird though.

I don't especially believe in ghosts nor do I have a photo to share with reddit but my mom and some of her closest friends swear that a ghost of an old man used to sit in this chair at a place they'd party at (didn't do much, just sat there). Now, they're generally pretty reliable and grounded folks but I understand that they used to party pretty hard so I'm not totally sold. Having said that, if true, it's a ghost that a whole room of people witnessed.

There is a theory that some ghost enthusiasts have concerning exactly this. Basically they view ghosts as psionic imprints on the surrounding environment, which only leaves them preserved in places without a lot of disturbances. So places with high traffic and a lot of people running through will have far lower chances of ghosts due to disturbances degrading the imprint. This of course is viewing ghosts as more of a recording than actual entities.

I heard some wackjob preacher once talk about angels saying that because they move faster than the speed of light itself, we can't see them. This would support the theory of why they are only captured in pictures...? I dunno, I'm more prone to believe in scientific proof.

Not only that, but for some reason all ghosts are old. Nobody that died after about 1950 is a ghost. How come we never see the ghost of Jimmy the mostly-acceptable car mechanic, or Jane the friendly receptionist from that nice optometry clinic down the street? It's always the ghost of Sir Jamesworth Von Neumanhouser who died in 1876 in some far-away castle you've never heard of.

If you took a picture of a ghost walking through a crowd in Times Square, not staring at the camera, then it wouldn't stand out as a ghost, even if all the people around it "saw nothing".

Maybe you don't notice them in places like that because you are being stimulated more. I have never seen a ghost afaik but I do believe that you tune in and out to certain things depending on the input given.

Selective perception is a proven thing and sometimes you cancel things out or add things to what your senses experience.

I like your reasoning, but a couple of things occur to me

1 ) Perhaps there are other ghost pictures, but because we dont have simple visual cues (such as a face looking at us) we dont notice. You would actually expect more sideways shots in movie footage in this case, because something could be noticable (because of movement) rather than noticable because of the clear eyes and mouth

2 ) If a ghost was in a crowd, would anyone even notice it? Perhaps there are a lot of "crowds with ghosts in them" but our eyes dont pick them out because a person in a busy place is something our eyes skim over. I guess you would expect more ghosts in crowded places because something like a town square has been used by people for a long time

As a psychology and paranormal/spiritual therapist, we as humans generally see things that 'make sense'. It's not that we don't actually see things that don't make sense, it's that if something our brains don't instantly comprehend then our brains sort of 'protect' us to keep our environment comfortable. Until something becomes normal in our world, as for me as a Native American, spiritual things are a part of my everyday world and so when something I can't 'debunk' with a physics explanation or other potential causes, it doesn't scare me I just acknowledge. A light switching on, or a fan that hasn't been touched in months, things moving that obviously no one is near, lights, shadows and sounds that can't be anything else. But if it's not in your normal purview, then your brain fits it into something else.

Here's my quack theory- the camera flash shocks them into visibility for only a few milliseconds. No one notices because of the flash.

In fact, curiously it seems people don't actually notice a lot of things that don't make sense. Well, they may notice them briefly but if it impossibly disappears, the brain writes it off as an error of perception and forgets it ever noticed it.

Probably the brain misinterprets things you see many times every day and is quite used to discarding perceptions that don't make sense without any trace in memory. As a matter of course. In fact this has been readily demonstrated where some filmakers (and the guy in Fight Club) slice in single frames of something else inconsistent with the scene and no one in the audience sees it.

So very brief appearances of impossible, anomalous, confusing things might simply get edited out by the brain. But not a camera.

Another thing clearly demonstrated is a flash does make things appear that aren't seen in person, like "orbs":

Well that's just dust or a bug getting hit by the flash, and too near to be in-focus. Also street signs, many mammal/insect eyes are retroreflective, reflecting light ONLY back to the source. A flash makes these objects glow very brightly, you would not see them under normal lighting.

So, a faint spirit mist made of retroreflective mist droplets that will only show up under a camera flash? Well, it would explain why no one on the scene sees it and it didn't show up in the viewfinder when framing the scene.

This is similar to my skepticism. If ghosts were at all possible, they would be everywhere. And, they'd be more prevalent in urban areas with long histories of human habitation. There would more ghosts in Manhattan than some rural farm area, and capitals like Paris, London, Baghdad, etc would be wall to wall ghosts. Think of middle eastern capitals like Cairo or Jerusalem. 5000 years of high-density human occupation would yield a lot of lost souls.

This is what's so silly about ghost-hunting. "HEY, let's trek through this purportedly-haunted house in complete darkness in the middle of the night!"

There's a reason people see the best results from ghost hunting in the middle of the night, and it's not because that's when spiritual activity is at its highest. It's because you're running around in the dark and your mind is playing tricks on you. The power of suggestion/the unknown can have a huge effect.

And for the record, I am open-minded on most paranormal subjects (including ghosts). I'm not trying to patronize people who take ghost-hunting seriously, either. I just think most investigations are susceptible to a host of false-positives because of the time of day they are performed, and that the notion of the nightime lending itself to better results is completely baseless

I'm no expert but I've been told that ghosts don't like heavily populated areas, they tend to stay away from civilization as much as they can.

Oh yes, "The Lady of Bachelor’s Grove" and the "Spirit in the Woods" are definitely not looking towards the camera. Arguably the ghost in "Stairway to the Afterlife" too, but that's okay as he's busy riding down the railing.

I threw down a GPS tracker down it a few years back. Lost signal pretty quickly, and never hiked around that part again.

A GPS uses satellites to triangulate our position to determine where we are. Without a way to get the signals underground a GPS won't work.

Better - high concentration flourescent dye. Nothing to go mechanically wrong with it, can be detected at high dilutions, and you should be able to narrow down where the Kettle connects up to the lakes based on dye concentrations on the far end.

Or maybe just some environmentally safe dye, and then look for some local water source that changes color a bit.

GPS and radio wouldn't work for the simple reason of there being too much obstruction between the device and the receiver. To put it simply, there would be no signal.

How is a GPS device working underground with no signal?

The human is actually insanely biased toward faces. All you need is shapes in a triangular arrangement and we are likely to attribute them to a face and an emotion. Like in toast. It's biologically one of the ways we have the ability to sympathize with things and each other. It is not unique to humans but it manifests itself in weird ways, like in this photo.

I also want to add that it's most likely glare, as we can see the light hitting the shiny brick to the right of the doorway. So we know that the brick is causing a light source to bounce into the lens.

That is like people thinking they can see Jesus in this picture!

To me, if zoomed in, the "ghost" appears to be a chair. Zoom in at the bottom, and you can see the chair leg, and the "head" looks like a headrest in low lighting conditions. The body also looks too inhuman.

While it's true people are prone to make familiar shapes out of objects what kind of material do you think that is? You can't just be given a photo that looks like a ghost and say it's some type of material and bring up that. What material is in the middle of the door with features oddly resembles a little kid with a face? I'm not saying it can't be just some ordinary object, without proof and explanations you can not prove it to be one or the other.

The point about the cellphone, maybe since they're in rural town they don't have iphones and galaxies like city folks. I was watching a special called "your effed up brain". They were explaining that a photo of mars shows a human face, and tons of people believed this was a human face. But another photo of the same spot years later show a mountain range. But people see faces, we associate with our own faces and recognize it in clouds, paintings, photos, even Doritos. Our brain recognizes a face and says "that's a face" and ignores the details around it.

Hell I was walking home after work one afternoon. I was tired, and noticed a man wearing bright neon yellow clothing standing at the edge of a park. I don't know why I noticed him, but I thought from the distance between us he must be huge. As I got closer, he never moved. Just stood there.

When I finally got close enough, around 100m away, I realized I was looking at a sign. It was a neon yellow sign saying that its a school zone.

I just went straight to sleep when I got home.

The way she is so confused about things, the buttons, the way she moves her hands is something a lot of people do because of the trails you get. LSD is only detectable up to 4 days WITH A BLOOD TEST. They found her 2 weeks later, IN WATER. I think she may have just fallen in and didn't know how to get out. Poor girl, hope this helps you sleep at night.

Oh, and don't get me wrong LSD is frickin' awesome. Just don't over dose and don't trip alone if you aren't sure how to handle it. It can just get confusing and very very rarely things like this can happen. Just wrong place at the wrong time.

Edit: by overdose I mean don't take so much to where you don't know what you are doing, there is no reasonable overdose for LSD, you'd have to take so much that it hasn't even been given an overdose standard yet.

As someone who has taken a lot of drugs, it looks a lot like she's really high. I wouldn't hold the autopsy of a weeks decayed corpse as solid evidence, as many drugs will only stay in your system for a short time. My best guess is that after the elevator didn't work she figured the next best idea was to climb a ladder on the side of the building, and finding the doors to the roof locked she found her way into a tank and couldn't get out.

Her arm movements look "choreiform" or a sort of tardive-dystonic movement (video of tardive dystonic movement). Some of these symptoms could be due to psychiatric medication side effect (is it known if she had any psych issues?) or even some illicit drugs like cocaine or MDMA.

Honestly? This could be me, when I am in a really good mood and think, nobody's watching me. I wouldn't press all the elevator-buttons, but the movements could easily be mine, dancing to to some music that is only in my mind or trying out some move, that is meant to be done with an instrument of some kind.
I see that the moves are strange, but I think a good part of it is the reader being primed to think about supernatural stuff.

This aspect of the story takes it to a whole different level of disturbing.

Any place with a water tank (including any houses that aren't on a mains water supply; town water reservoirs and water towers etc.) usually has the tank full of dead rats and pigeons and other such stuff. That's why they chlorinate the town supply.

This is my worst nightmare. When I was younger, there was a pretty big news about a boy drowning in the city pipeline and the city had a hard time finding the body for a while so some residents started getting hair and skin cells in their water supply. Ever since then, this has been my worst nightmare. I can't.

That might make sense, but hotels don't get water from the water tank..water tanks on the tops of buildings are used to store pressure for the pipes. It would be like you drinking water out of a straw and, as your sucking it, your lungs start bleeding so you complain that the water tastes weird

i personally don't like watching scary movies for this particular reason. They really creep me out and it renders me in a state of uneasiness.

All that looked like to me was her thinking there might be some sensor for the elevator, kind of like an automatic door or something, and trying to trip it to make the elevator work.

I've worked with handicapped people in the past and that's a very common way of moving your arms for someone with cerebral palsy.

I used to be a bar manager and I agree with you, looks like speed and/or lsd to me. shes got the paranoid actions of someone coming down from speed. Obviously shes hallucinating wildly, and if shes tripping, its possible shes missed any regular prescribed meds and suffering side effects from those.

I was thinking some sort of hide and seek game. She does seem to be looking out for some one.

I thought that too until I saw that the elevator had a mind of its own. That's the part I can't explain.

The most probable situation in my mind is that she had a drink spiked or got dosed with something in a date rape sort of situation, but had an opportunity to get out and so she did. Explains both the odd movements and looking out for someone.

Now that you mention it, it makes sense. Someone was holding the button outside of the elevator in the hall, preventing it from closing. She then goes out and confronts him. She comes back annoyed, trying to press any and every button to make the doors close. She goes back out and the person has some sort of weapon or something to threaten her with, right when her stance changes in the video.

Her hands move bizarrely due to a panic situation, she's not really noticing what her hands are doing at this point because she is terrified. Shortly afterwards you can see her hands are closed together and raised, like she is pleading with whoever the person is.

The person then forces her to go with him and they leave, at which point the door open button from the hall has stop being pressed and the door closes.

From here the person likely took her to the roof, where something unknown likely happened. The person then forced her inside the water tank and closed it, sealing her in. Which is how the lid got closed behind her.

From here either she couldn't swim and drowned, or she panicked, flailed, and swam herself to the point where her muscles were physically exhausted and she drown.

Well, you would expect to see someone follow her in the direction away from the elevator toward the stairs, but, you don't (since she would've been communicating in the direction to her right, as that's the way she's facing).

But, there's 30 seconds of no one .. but, then again, as someone pointed out, the video has a jump cut at 2:58, so, perhaps something happened there (the person harassing her) followed her at that point. Perhaps a security guard killed her? It would explain the access to the water tank, and that odd cut.

While I do think that there's more to this case than rational explanation, I would like to say that the fact that they used an ELISA assay is completely coincidental. ELISA stands for enzyme linked immunostaining assay and is a commonly used tool in any scientific environment. ELISAs can be used to test for an endless number of factors, and the LAM specification stands for lipoarabinomannan, a glycolipid associated with TB. While this is a strange coincidence, that is all it is.
