Yeah, the reason I love English so much is how chaotic and confusing and illogical it can be. I mean, order is great too, but I'm glad my language is charmingly chaotic.
Colons are used instead of commas when you're immediately restating the thing you just said (that restatement, iirc, is called an appositive). For example, in the sentence "I have a brother: Bob," "Bob" is a restatement of "brother."
Colons also can only be used after a complete sentence; you could not say "Bob: my brother, is nice," for example.
That's roughly my understand of how to properly use a colon, anyhow. I hope that helps, and to those more knowledgeable than me about colons, please correct me if I've said anything erroneously!

By far and away this post about grief. I was referred to it when sharing stories of dealing with my sister's suicide. Of all the things on grief I have ever read in any format it is the best. I saved and gilded it. Since people often don't follow links I'll post it here:
Alright, here goes. I'm old. What that means is that I've survived (so far) and a lot of people I've known and loved did not. I've lost friends, best friends, acquaintances, co-workers, grandparents, mom, relatives, teachers, mentors, students, neighbors, and a host of other folks. I have no children, and I can't imagine the pain it must be to lose a child. But here's my two cents.
I wish I could say you get used to people dying. I never did. I don't want to. It tears a hole through me whenever somebody I love dies, no matter the circumstances. But I don't want it to "not matter". I don't want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gouged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love. And the scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are only ugly to people who can't see.
As for grief, you'll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you're drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. And all you can do is float. You find some piece of the wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe it's some physical thing. Maybe it's a happy memory or a photograph. Maybe it's a person who is also floating. For a while, all you can do is float. Stay alive.
In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don't even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you'll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what's going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything...and the wave comes crashing. But in between waves, there is life.
Somewhere down the line, and it's different for everybody, you find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas, or landing at O'Hare. You can see it coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you'll come out.
Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don't really want them to. But you learn that you'll survive them. And other waves will come. And you'll survive them too. If you're lucky, you'll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks.
Honestly I've read a ton on the subject of grief and written my share as well. Regardless of medium this is simply the best description I've ever read. It's one of my favorite written things in any format.
.999999999 repeating infinitely equals 1. if you try to subtract(1 - .9999), you will be writing 0 and carrying 1 infinitely, so in math we can use it like it is 1.

That's the problem with decimals; for some fractions, the decimal is only a very close approximation.

Out of curiosity, why is is that '(repeating)' appears after the third 3 rather than the second, or the fourth?
The problem I see is that 0.333(repeating) is far clumsier than 1/3. What if you want to show a fraction like 1/17? As a decimal, you have to write 0.058823529 etc and that is a lot less understandable a number than it's fractional equivalent, in terms of visualising it. I don't even know at what point that decimal recurs or even if it does, but 1/17 is clean. When doing something simple like working out 1/3 of 1/17, I can tell you straight away that that's 1/51 but if you want 0.3333(repeating) x 0.058823529etc, it turns into a number that I've rapidly lost sight of.
I am by no means a mathematician and would consider myself to be something of a layman with numbers, however in maths tuition I had when I was 17, I had it drummed into me that you should use a fraction where possible as these are exact and more workable than decimals. This just seems to make sense to me and I would welcome examples of situations that decimals should be used instead of fractions.

That's just how he typed it but when you have a repeating decimal, the notation is that you put a line over the top of the repeating part. So 1/3 would be 0.33 with a line over the second three. Another is 1/7 which is 0.142857142857142857. So since that whole 142857 keeps repeating you put the line over the whole thing.
you never know, maybe in some futuristic 6th dimension-accelerated-black hole math,,,, infinite to us, is no longer infinite :) but yea, you would still be correct in our current math model.

Dont want to sound like an ass to the guy, but i think you are right. Considering the fact that he wrote the story as a reply to a question regarding a bad name, he made his point clear that names dont mean anything regarding one's success. However, your comment holds credibility too. It wasnt that uplifiting. People have done way better. Just because his story was long and demonstrated the effort he put into it doesnt make it good. She just says, "Oh, you should probably go clean that out in the bathroom."
By the time I was done flushing my eye, everyone had already gone to lunch. Mrs. bat shit crazy made me finish the dissection by myself because she was eating her lunch at her desk. I barely made the end of lunch and was too pissed and grossed out to eat.
Talked to the principal about her, found out there had already been dozens of complaints against her, she didn't work there again the following year.
Oh, one time, she came to school with one crawdad too few for the dissection because she "left them out on the table last night and the cat got to one". She was also a hoarder and apparently lost most of our homework and her school computer in her living room. Thinking about her makes my skin crawl.

Another time we were in New Orleans and prior to the trip she told me she wanted me to plan something special (sexual) which she had never tried. That was really a challenge considering she admitted to finger banging a female friend while riding an elephant in India and also joining the mile high club with that some friend on the trip home. People need to realize the real situation here.
The assholes in charge of Turkey are supporting some assholes in Syria. The assholes in charge of Russia are supporting different assholes in Syria.
The western world can't find anyone to support in Syria who isn't an asshole, except possibly the Kurds. Except that the US doesn't want to support the Kurds too much because it would piss off the assholes in charge of Turkey. Even though the Turks are assholes, they used to not be assholes and the US kind of wants them to not be assholes again. So the US doesn't want to be assholes to Turkey, even though it means kind of being assholes to the Kurds.
So when some other assholes in Syria (who everyone agrees are assholes) attacked the French, the Russians decided to use it as an excuse to bomb some of the assholes in Syria that they don't like, and they figured no one would really pay much attention to whether or not the assholes they bombed were actually the assholes who attacked the French. And the western governments pretty much decided to just not make a fuss about specifically which assholes the Russians bombed, since they are all assholes.
Except that the Turks were pissed that the Russians were bombing their assholes. So they decided to be assholes and kill the assholes who were killing their assholes.
Meanwhile, the Syrian people are stuck in the middle. Surrounded by assholes on all sides, with pretty much no hope of anyone who isn't an asshole coming to help them.

Colons are used instead of commas when you're immediately restating the thing you just said (that restatement, iirc, is called an appositive). For example, in the sentence "I have a brother: Bob," "Bob" is a restatement of "brother."
Colons also can only be used after a complete sentence; you could not say "Bob: my brother, is nice," for example.
That's roughly my understand of how to properly use a colon, anyhow. I hope that helps, and to those more knowledgeable than me about colons, please correct me if I've said anything erroneously!

Out of curiosity, why is is that '(repeating)' appears after the third 3 rather than the second, or the fourth?
The problem I see is that 0.333(repeating) is far clumsier than 1/3. What if you want to show a fraction like 1/17? As a decimal, you have to write 0.058823529 etc and that is a lot less understandable a number than it's fractional equivalent, in terms of visualising it. I don't even know at what point that decimal recurs or even if it does, but 1/17 is clean. When doing something simple like working out 1/3 of 1/17, I can tell you straight away that that's 1/51 but if you want 0.3333(repeating) x 0.058823529etc, it turns into a number that I've rapidly lost sight of.
I am by no means a mathematician and would consider myself to be something of a layman with numbers, however in maths tuition I had when I was 17, I had it drummed into me that you should use a fraction where possible as these are exact and more workable than decimals. This just seems to make sense to me and I would welcome examples of situations that decimals should be used instead of fractions.

That's just how he typed it but when you have a repeating decimal, the notation is that you put a line over the top of the repeating part. So 1/3 would be 0.33 with a line over the second three. Another is 1/7 which is 0.142857142857142857. So since that whole 142857 keeps repeating you put the line over the whole thing.
