The experiment has been around since people thought space was aether. The difficulty was getting it precice enough to detect ultra small preturbances and filter out earthly vibrations.
Interestingly enough, the 1887 Michelson-Morley was done on a small pool of Mercury so as to allow the apparatus to turn at a (near) constant rate. Here's a nice picture on the setup.
The difficulty was not due to the complexity of experimental design required, it was the precision of the measurement. Gravity waves carry an EXTREMELY small amount of energy.

Such a big experimental side seems to be very susceptible for at least minor construction deviations. Given that the gravity waves influence the beams on a very low scale, how do they know that the results aren't confirming just due to the possible fact that the construction is off by a few cm or so?
My understanding is that if the construction was off then they wouldn't have complete destructive interference, so there would constantly be a reading on the sensor, instead of it just being when gravity waves distort the lengths of the beams

If it's the light part that you don't understand, then you need to see the double slit experiment. Basically, because light physically acts not just like a particle (photon) but also a wave, it can have "interference".
The waves are additive. If two waves of equal magnitude are stacked upon each other and the peaks are in the same place, you see only one peak that is bigger than either of the two smaller onesโ"constructive interference". However, if the peak of one wave is aligned with the trough (dip) of the other one, you see nothingโ"destructive interference". If they aren't perfectly aligned, you see some but not all of the light.
In LIGO, the lasers are set up perfectly for "destructive interference" so absolutely no light hits the detector, even though two lasers are coming together. However, if there is even the smallest change in the length of the tunnels through which the lasers were fired (they're each about 4 km long), then one of the lasers will be "out of phase" for destructive interference, and they will come together to have some constructive interference instead. Thus, the detector can see them.
A laser is split into 2 and reflected such that when they intersect again on the bounce back, their wavelengths perfectly cancel, so nothing gets through to the other side of the reflection. The only way to see any laser come through is if the mirrors move and mess up the wavelengths' recombination, and the only way for that to happen, with that setup, is if gravitational waves literally warp the space around the mirrors as they move through, proving their existence. We saw some laser come through.
1 laserbeam splits in 2 laserbeams and travel a long distance to be reflected, because they have the same source and distance they can cancel each other out. However gravitational waves streches the distances , which causes a difference between the two beams. This difference causes the beam to be detectable instead of undetectable.

From what I understand, When the laser waves come back at each other at the same time, they are supposed to cancel each other out.
The effect of gravity changes the distance between the mirror, making it so they aren't in sync, so they don't cancel out and you can see the laser.

I was saving the chance to watch this thinking it was a serious documentary. I was disappointed in one way but entertained nonetheless. It filled my Kung Fury need.
It was funny but I could have used like maybe 10 less of the "highlighted" words/phrases. Took away a little of the oomph from the gag towards the end there, but not by much.

If you look closely the rotors are sticking out of the costume, with nothing on top of them at all. I don't think they're really affected, with how far out they are.
Back in the 70s a guy used dry cleaner bags and votive candles to do that. Witnesses called the police to report ufos. It took a while to figure out they were harmless.

I'm pretty sure it was very close to being exactly wrong when it talked about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the only part I could pick out, though.
It left some stuff out and didn't mention the reason as to why we used the bombs. The facts were correct (we dropped two bombs, they surrendered) the reason is because at the time the US had two options. Bomb them or invade Tokyo which very well could have been the biggest loss by numbers in the war. We would have taken it but taken astronomical losses in doing so. So we dropped two bombs and threatened to keep doing so until they surrendered. So Japan surrendered when in reality the US only had those two bombs and couldn't keep bombing Japan like that if they wanted to. One the biggest bluffs in history and it ended the largest war in history.

The problem is when you learn about WWI they get bogged down in details and its easy to overlook or forget why WWI happened when the fact is there really wasn't any good reason. Everyone wanted to go to war with each other because everyone thought they would win because of the recent technology and the lack of major wars for nearly 40 years (Franco-Prussian war in 1871). When dumbed down to the basics of exactly what happened, WWI seems stupid (This guy that nobody likes got assassinated by some terrorist organization and every major power shits itself to kill each other to prove how powerful they are) when opposed to WWII which seemed necessary (These guys are conquering all of Europe and Asia and show no signs of stopping, we have to declare war now before they come for us).

My entire point is that is someone's interpretation from someone who is just learning history in school. Obviously how I put it is a very very basic explanation for someone who isn't interested in history. You can very well go a lot deeper than this and be more intelligent about it, but that wasn't my point.
The only thing not subjective is what we learn from sources (Assuming other sources are in line with it) and often times the WHY is subject to interpretation.
Also, it is pretty widely accepted that the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand started WWI though it wasn't necessarily the reason, it was the excuse. But you don't arrive at this conclusion without going deeper into it and the history classes you are bound to learn in American Highschool don't go very deep into WWI (Often times glossing over it entirely in less than a day to get to the "more exciting and more important" WWII, which to someone who stopped their history lessons after highschool looks like these two countries (Germany and Japan) were invading all their neighbors and Britain and France and later USA got sick of their shit.
I'm not angry, I just want to specify that my previous comment's descriptions were intended to display how the wars looked to someone who took history in highschool then stopped there. I do know a lot of the history surrounding those two wars.
Also Japan got dissed at the sit down meeting and that actually led to Japan saying, "Fuck those motherfuckers! We are going independent." And that led to them taking over land that they felt they got dissed out of getting when they were kept in the backroom away from the WW1 post land grab party.
By the way that land grab party is mostly the reason why the Middle East is fucked up today. Yeah, we are all still having to suffer the consequences of a WW1 post war party land grab fuck up.

I'd recommend reading the myth of Sisyphus first. It addresses the meaningless of life and that once it is accepted, you are then free to reach a state of contentment. Although I would still recommend his other works too.

I have accepted that life is meaningless, but I know that I shouldn't dwell on it. I'm here seemingly pointlessly, so my options are to sit down on the spot and let myself die of dehydration, live a miserable existence where I dwell on the pointlessness of life, or I can just try to be happy and breathe my own meaning into my existence. From a practical perspective, the third seems the best option.
But isn't that kind of liberating? After all, if nothing matters, than you have the freedom to do what you want to in your life and make your own choices. You can determine your own destiny without having some greater being decide it for you.
Kind of like recess in elementary school. Your teacher let you and all your classmates out, and for those 30 minutes you could do whatever you wanted. Play tag or kickball, use the jumprope, monkey bars or hula hoop. It was your choice. If life had a predetermined meaning it would be boring, and people would no longer have freedom.
I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. It is certainly liberating in a way, but that doesn't mean the sheer enormity and scope of the universe can't still move you to terror sometimes.

When I say liberty I guess I should have said the liberty to follow your own original, primal desires, what ever those may be.
So take a Christian fundamentalist, in his eyes because he has (on faith) taken the Bible to be the book of truth, his life already has a prescribed purpose (to act the way his God wants him to) and thus he must behave in certain ways. He has to restrict himself, adhere to a certain set of rigid moral and ethical beliefs. Sure he has a purpose, but when your life has a purpose it comes with conditions, and now he is restricted, he no longer has to freedom to give in to his animalistic desires.
But the man who realizes that life has no meaning CAN give into his primal desires, he can cheat on his wife, fuck over his coworkers, abuse substances all he wants, or not, depending on whether he wants to engage in this activity, but he has the choice.
Personally, I was indoctrinated into Buddhism when I was young, according to Buddhism the purpose of your life is to enter Nirvana (to never be incarnated again) by doing certain things like helping others for instance. Naturally, I am a selfish man, and I did not like this, but when I rejected it I had the freedom to satisfy my selfish desires. Instead of helping other people (like I was guilted into doing before) I focused o myself and excelled in school and work.
What I'm trying to say is that meaningless gives you the freedom to follow your biological desires without guilt.
I don't really look at it like that... I mean, killing people is generally a bad idea even if there's no god or karma to punish you for it, and giving in to your base desires can get old after a while.
If you've reached the conclusion that everything is meaningless, it can also give you more sympathy for others, because you realize that they, too, are just stumbling through life with the same questions, stuck in the same absurd situation you are, and that the whole idea of exploiting others to "get ahead" is just as pointless as anything else.

Yeah you can take that opinion too. But that's my point, because of how meaningless everything is WE can decide which attitude to have. For me, the taste of an expensive steak, the roar of a sports car, and the vastness of my expensive apartment, are (although ultimately meaningless) valuable to me because of the pleasure they provide me with, as a result I will behave selfishly (and have behaved selfishly) in order to get those things. But you're more than welcome to take the opposite attitude.
Take away all the consequences and I would still feel guilty about killing anyone. Maybe "guilty" isn't the right word... it would negatively affect my self image?
I do see your point, and I guess I'm just trying to make the additional point that one can still have a "conscience" even without a belief system, because most people probably think of nihilism as being strictly amoral, but I think you can derive compassion from that philosophy as well.

Since it's release, I still watch this a lot.. like, on a weekly basis. It's action packed, ridiculous, 30 minutes long.. it has everything my inner child could ever want in a movie and I'm really hoping there's a sequel and that, if there is, they don't screw it up, but I'd be completely satisfied if there wasn't.

I don't think you understand. I saw it the day after it was posted on YouTube nearly a year ago and I've seen it countless times since then. The only way this movie will ever get old is if I personally get old and decide to start being an adult and stop being nostalgic all the time.
I wish I could go back in time and give a VHS copy of Kung Fury to the 8-year old me in '93.
I mean, I understand what that's like, don't get me wrong. I just think it's literally impossible for me to hate this film. Even with its flaws, it's perfect. In fact, it's perfect because of its flaws.
David Sandberg is a genius; he came up with an idea for a film (essentially a period piece) that you can't find legitimately fault with. You can't fault the technique because it's supposed to be riddled with faults. Even if you found fault with how the faults were incorporated, you'd simply prove yourself wrong.
You are really passionate about this movie. But i can see where you're coming from. For me, Kung Fury is just like Just Cause 2 or Saints Row 2. If you do not take it too seriously, you are in for so much fun. My favorite short film and 2 of my favorite games of all time.
Very interesting, my friend just told me last night to check out Turbo Kid. I watched the trailer for it. Definitely seems like it's worth a watch. I noticed it has Michael Ironside in it and that threw me off guard. Other than Justified, I don't recall seeing him since the original Total Recall.

Personally, though I will say I love the movie, I almost feel that the trailer was BETTER than the movie. The trailer for it was amazing and it left me speculating on a lot of things that are really just glossed over in this movie. And of course the first I heard of hte project was when Hasslehoff released his music video for it which looked amazing.
Don't get me wrong, I REALLY liked it and there were some great moments in the movie but I think the trailer and the music video were 'better' than the final product.
This certainly wasn't helped either by the masses of eyes that were on YouTube rights problems after the Fine Brothers fuss. More people than before are aware and pissed off about what these guys are all up to.
Just as the React World fuss was fading, SoFlo screwed up, and far more people noticed than they would have done at any other moment in the past.

Soflo steals videos (blatantly) and people called him out on that shit He tried to cover his ass by making a shitty video "calling out" popular youtuber H3H3. He than made a fake account that he uses to steal videos, but then his main channel sources it so it looks like a legit source (to outsiders) and he got called out again.
He also unknowingly showed almost exact evidence that he steals videos and he has a YT to Mp4 browser extension. All in all, he deserves whatever is coming from the YouTube community.
SoFlo (some YouTuber and his associated media company/network) uploads other people's videos and makes money from it under the guise that it is his own work because he adds to the beginning "Guys, I'm not going to lie, this is totally me while driving" or some stupid shit and then plays the other person's entire video on his channel or Facebook page. He steals other people's shit and has millions of followers and possibly making hundreds of thousands of dollars because of it. Ethan Klein, of h3h3productions, called him out and SoFlo tried to respond and then Ethan responded to that response. There's lawsuit threats involved. If you can stand this dude's voice and the background music, this is a pretty good explanation.
Soflo has a lame youtube where he does fake/harrasing pranks and steals other peoples videos with out permission. H3h3 called him out on his bullshit and was very accurate and true. Soflo tried making a comeback video at him talking crap but it backfired.
I love this fight and the one between GradeAUnderA and Jinx. More than anything though, I love that Boogie2988 is getting involved. He's my favorite YouTuber.

My grandpa was a fishing guide at a remote lake in California called Eagle Lake. There's pretty much nothing there but there is a giant castle, like a medieval castle, on one of its shores. I was told that the guy who built and owned it made his fortune off of two of his inventions - the bendy reflectors on the side of highways and thermal tiles they used on a space shuttle. I have no idea if it's true but this reminded me of that weird castle.

Within that purview, "SM64 - Watch for Rolling Rocks - 0.5x A Presses (Commentated)" is a fascinating video. A runner gets a Star in Super Mario 64 - one that would normally require wall-kicks - without pressing the jump button once (only holding it). In each step along the way, he provides thorough commentary that is engaging half because of his idiosyncratic way of explaining things (not oversimplifying things, but keeping it somewhat accessible) and half just due to the ridiculous nature of some of the tricks.
I know there's some people who make fun of him (and other TASers) for putting so much effort into something "unimportant", but everyone needs a hobby, and I think it's pretty cool.

I was pretty interested in that new Japanese stealth fighter getting a demonstrator model, and new name, too. It was previously called the ATD-X, and there was just a scale model. Now, there's a flyable plane called the X-2.

Halo 5, a first person shooter on the XBox One has a fantastic map editor called Forge. You can make amazing things with it and have all your friends play with you. This came out yesterday.
Apart from all the amazing science stuff being explained on Reddit (which I am fascinated by) the best thing for me at the moment has to be DanielFromSL and his socio/psychopathic style in Dayz and other games, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time!
All of Atomic Robo is free on Hiveworks. I started following it in print when it started but I haven't lived near a comic shop I liked (or had space around the house) for collecting in about 5 years, so getting to read the next 6 volumes I had never seen for free was a pretty awesome surprise.

Such a big experimental side seems to be very susceptible for at least minor construction deviations. Given that the gravity waves influence the beams on a very low scale, how do they know that the results aren't confirming just due to the possible fact that the construction is off by a few cm or so?

This video could help you understand the LIGO part.
If it's the light part that you don't understand, then you need to see the double slit experiment. Basically, because light physically acts not just like a particle (photon) but also a wave, it can have "interference".
The waves are additive. If two waves of equal magnitude are stacked upon each other and the peaks are in the same place, you see only one peak that is bigger than either of the two smaller onesโ"constructive interference". However, if the peak of one wave is aligned with the trough (dip) of the other one, you see nothingโ"destructive interference". If they aren't perfectly aligned, you see some but not all of the light.
In LIGO, the lasers are set up perfectly for "destructive interference" so absolutely no light hits the detector, even though two lasers are coming together. However, if there is even the smallest change in the length of the tunnels through which the lasers were fired (they're each about 4 km long), then one of the lasers will be "out of phase" for destructive interference, and they will come together to have some constructive interference instead. Thus, the detector can see them.

A laser is split into 2 and reflected such that when they intersect again on the bounce back, their wavelengths perfectly cancel, so nothing gets through to the other side of the reflection. The only way to see any laser come through is if the mirrors move and mess up the wavelengths' recombination, and the only way for that to happen, with that setup, is if gravitational waves literally warp the space around the mirrors as they move through, proving their existence. We saw some laser come through.

From what I understand, When the laser waves come back at each other at the same time, they are supposed to cancel each other out.
The effect of gravity changes the distance between the mirror, making it so they aren't in sync, so they don't cancel out and you can see the laser.

I'm pretty sure it was very close to being exactly wrong when it talked about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the only part I could pick out, though.

It left some stuff out and didn't mention the reason as to why we used the bombs. The facts were correct (we dropped two bombs, they surrendered) the reason is because at the time the US had two options. Bomb them or invade Tokyo which very well could have been the biggest loss by numbers in the war. We would have taken it but taken astronomical losses in doing so. So we dropped two bombs and threatened to keep doing so until they surrendered. So Japan surrendered when in reality the US only had those two bombs and couldn't keep bombing Japan like that if they wanted to. One the biggest bluffs in history and it ended the largest war in history.

Well no, I think he meant what he said. The problem is when you learn about WWI they get bogged down in details and its easy to overlook or forget why WWI happened when the fact is there really wasn't any good reason. Everyone wanted to go to war with each other because everyone thought they would win because of the recent technology and the lack of major wars for nearly 40 years (Franco-Prussian war in 1871). When dumbed down to the basics of exactly what happened, WWI seems stupid (This guy that nobody likes got assassinated by some terrorist organization and every major power shits itself to kill each other to prove how powerful they are) when opposed to WWII which seemed necessary (These guys are conquering all of Europe and Asia and show no signs of stopping, we have to declare war now before they come for us).

My entire point is that is someone's interpretation from someone who is just learning history in school. Obviously how I put it is a very very basic explanation for someone who isn't interested in history. You can very well go a lot deeper than this and be more intelligent about it, but that wasn't my point.
The only thing not subjective is what we learn from sources (Assuming other sources are in line with it) and often times the WHY is subject to interpretation.
Also, it is pretty widely accepted that the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand started WWI though it wasn't necessarily the reason, it was the excuse. But you don't arrive at this conclusion without going deeper into it and the history classes you are bound to learn in American Highschool don't go very deep into WWI (Often times glossing over it entirely in less than a day to get to the "more exciting and more important" WWII, which to someone who stopped their history lessons after highschool looks like these two countries (Germany and Japan) were invading all their neighbors and Britain and France and later USA got sick of their shit.
I'm not angry, I just want to specify that my previous comment's descriptions were intended to display how the wars looked to someone who took history in highschool then stopped there. I do know a lot of the history surrounding those two wars.

Kind of like recess in elementary school. Your teacher let you and all your classmates out, and for those 30 minutes you could do whatever you wanted. Play tag or kickball, use the jumprope, monkey bars or hula hoop. It was your choice. If life had a predetermined meaning it would be boring, and people would no longer have freedom.

When I say liberty I guess I should have said the liberty to follow your own original, primal desires, what ever those may be.
So take a Christian fundamentalist, in his eyes because he has (on faith) taken the Bible to be the book of truth, his life already has a prescribed purpose (to act the way his God wants him to) and thus he must behave in certain ways. He has to restrict himself, adhere to a certain set of rigid moral and ethical beliefs. Sure he has a purpose, but when your life has a purpose it comes with conditions, and now he is restricted, he no longer has to freedom to give in to his animalistic desires.
But the man who realizes that life has no meaning CAN give into his primal desires, he can cheat on his wife, fuck over his coworkers, abuse substances all he wants, or not, depending on whether he wants to engage in this activity, but he has the choice.
Personally, I was indoctrinated into Buddhism when I was young, according to Buddhism the purpose of your life is to enter Nirvana (to never be incarnated again) by doing certain things like helping others for instance. Naturally, I am a selfish man, and I did not like this, but when I rejected it I had the freedom to satisfy my selfish desires. Instead of helping other people (like I was guilted into doing before) I focused o myself and excelled in school and work.
What I'm trying to say is that meaningless gives you the freedom to follow your biological desires without guilt.

I don't really look at it like that... I mean, killing people is generally a bad idea even if there's no god or karma to punish you for it, and giving in to your base desires can get old after a while.
If you've reached the conclusion that everything is meaningless, it can also give you more sympathy for others, because you realize that they, too, are just stumbling through life with the same questions, stuck in the same absurd situation you are, and that the whole idea of exploiting others to "get ahead" is just as pointless as anything else.

Yeah you can take that opinion too. But that's my point, because of how meaningless everything is WE can decide which attitude to have. For me, the taste of an expensive steak, the roar of a sports car, and the vastness of my expensive apartment, are (although ultimately meaningless) valuable to me because of the pleasure they provide me with, as a result I will behave selfishly (and have behaved selfishly) in order to get those things. But you're more than welcome to take the opposite attitude.

Since it's release, I still watch this a lot.. like, on a weekly basis. It's action packed, ridiculous, 30 minutes long.. it has everything my inner child could ever want in a movie and I'm really hoping there's a sequel and that, if there is, they don't screw it up, but I'd be completely satisfied if there wasn't.

I mean, I understand what that's like, don't get me wrong. I just think it's literally impossible for me to hate this film. Even with its flaws, it's perfect. In fact, it's perfect because of its flaws.
David Sandberg is a genius; he came up with an idea for a film (essentially a period piece) that you can't find legitimately fault with. You can't fault the technique because it's supposed to be riddled with faults. Even if you found fault with how the faults were incorporated, you'd simply prove yourself wrong.
To me, it is the perfect film.

Personally, though I will say I love the movie, I almost feel that the trailer was BETTER than the movie. The trailer for it was amazing and it left me speculating on a lot of things that are really just glossed over in this movie. And of course the first I heard of hte project was when Hasslehoff released his music video for it which looked amazing.
Don't get me wrong, I REALLY liked it and there were some great moments in the movie but I think the trailer and the music video were 'better' than the final product.

SoFlo (some YouTuber and his associated media company/network) uploads other people's videos and makes money from it under the guise that it is his own work because he adds to the beginning "Guys, I'm not going to lie, this is totally me while driving" or some stupid shit and then plays the other person's entire video on his channel or Facebook page. He steals other people's shit and has millions of followers and possibly making hundreds of thousands of dollars because of it. Ethan Klein, of h3h3productions, called him out and SoFlo tried to respond and then Ethan responded to that response. There's lawsuit threats involved. If you can stand this dude's voice and the background music, this is a pretty good explanation.

My grandpa was a fishing guide at a remote lake in California called Eagle Lake. There's pretty much nothing there but there is a giant castle, like a medieval castle, on one of its shores. I was told that the guy who built and owned it made his fortune off of two of his inventions - the bendy reflectors on the side of highways and thermal tiles they used on a space shuttle. I have no idea if it's true but this reminded me of that weird castle.

People speedrun games. Some people speedrun games using tools, such as emulators and frame-precise input, to create "tool-assisted" speedruns. Some such speedruns have additional challenges to make them more interesting, such as pressing a certain button as few times as possible.
Within that purview, "SM64 - Watch for Rolling Rocks - 0.5x A Presses (Commentated)" is a fascinating video. A runner gets a Star in Super Mario 64 - one that would normally require wall-kicks - without pressing the jump button once (only holding it). In each step along the way, he provides thorough commentary that is engaging half because of his idiosyncratic way of explaining things (not oversimplifying things, but keeping it somewhat accessible) and half just due to the ridiculous nature of some of the tricks.
I know there's some people who make fun of him (and other TASers) for putting so much effort into something "unimportant", but everyone needs a hobby, and I think it's pretty cool.

Edit: down votes? really? Let's be clear here; Kissinger is one of the most evil politicians of the last century, for instance dragging out the war in Southeast Asia an extra couple of years. Why has this only come to reddits' attention this week?

EDIT: Also, the first place wasn't as good as this. I don't have a link, but it was a girl with a nurse uniform with a mask covering her mouth and nose.
