The staining that will occur from those bubbles are not worth it. If you need to incorporate movement use an impeller.

Matacks607 ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 12:13:42 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Why would bubbles cause straining?

Bazzzaa ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 12:50:30 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That tank looks like it has a structural frame at the top and I hope it has a glass cover to protect the LED lighting. Every time a bubble reaches the surface and pops it will splash those with water. That water contains trace elements that will remain on those pieces. Multiplied millions of times that will build up a scale that will stain.

Matacks607 ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 13:06:36 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Bazzzaa ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 18:26:04 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Yea it must or those lights would quickly become a fire hazard. I don't like bubbles personally I don't think they are natural and I have a saltwater mixed reef tank. If I had any bubbles I would soon have a problem with salt creep. If you are looking for motion you could use impeller pumps. If cost is not a factor get eco tech mp10 or mp40. They have variable motion. If cost is a factor get a couple of koralia nano impeller pumps.

BloodyLlama ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 16:42:46 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

In practice they can handle a lot more than that generally, your insurance company just isn't going to pay up if it starts failing. If you wanted to be really anal about making sure the floor could handle it you could just make a big (~ 8'x8' would be easy) square of 2 layers of 3/4" plywood and it would do a good job of spreading out the weight.

Just get some Indian almond leaves and put them in your tank.

They leach tanins that dye the water.

They're really really great for Bettas too. The micronutrients they leach are wonderful for Bettas, and best replicate their natural environment. A lot of Betta keepers use them to help heal torn fins.

[deleted] ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:34:40 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

:) have fun!

sunisai ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:52:01 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

you can just do the bucket method. you can get the leaves, and the driftwood, and place them in a bucket of dechlorinated water. did that in the passed when we where breeding bettas. it worked really well. to make the extract. you really only need enough water to just cover the leaves and wood. and just lightly add as it evaporates. in about 2 weeks, you should have some nice blackwater, that is strong enough to put in bottles for the extract. and you can control how dark the water gets. might not* be as cheap as buying the extract, but safer imo, because chances are you will know whats in it. :)

CrypticCorn ยท 165 points ยท Posted at 00:19:47 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 30 points ยท Posted at 01:01:30 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

CrypticCorn ยท 21 points ยท Posted at 03:25:09 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That's exactly what I'm planning! 2 coccinas and some shrimp

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 18 points ยท Posted at 03:38:53 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Don't want to rain on your parade, but what shrimp are you getting? Coccinas have a low pH requirement (5), apparently they get sick easily at higher pH.

CrypticCorn ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 03:58:44 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I haven't put too much thought into the specific shrimp yet because I care more about the bettas but it's my understanding that both the coccina and neocardina shrimp will do well at 6 which is what I'm aiming for

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 04:06:48 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

6 is actually too low for neocaridina and 6 is at the high end for coccina.

Why not go for pugnax instead? Those are close to splendens in hardiness.

CrypticCorn ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 04:28:09 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

6 is what I'm currently aiming for because I'm not sure I can make it lower and still have a kh high enough to be stable. If I lower it too much then I'll ditch the shrimp idea but I'd rather it be on the high end of ideal and stable than swing around. I'm still experimenting though and I need to watch it happen to really understand how all those parameters interact with each other. It will be a while before anything is added so while I have a general livestock plan now I'm not married to it and it may change as I mess around with things.

It's really just basic water chemistry and doing your due diligence as a pet owner. You have to provide the correct conditions for the species you want to keep.

Most people don't consider the pH or hardness of their water, but it should absolutely be the first thing they consider. In fact, it's commonly accepted in the hobby that everyone should own a test kit or strips for testing your water...it's just that not everyone does, unfortunately.

You want your pet to thrive, not just survive. That starts by giving them the best possible living conditions most suitable for their species.

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 01:10:23 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

You're probably aware, but since you've bred rubra, I might as well bring it up anyway.

Essentially, B. rubra has a close relative, B. dennisyongi, that is often mistaken for rubra. As a result, aquarium examples of rubra could be dennisyongi or hybrids.

To distinguish them, read this paper: http://lkcnhm.nus.edu.sg/nus/pdf/PUBLICATION/Raffles%20Bulletin%20of%20Zoology/Past%20Volumes/RBZ%2061(1)/61rbz323-330.pdf

Also, do you mind sharing your strategy to breed them? I'm planning on keeping pugnax.

TheGute ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 05:49:40 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

I actually hadn't read about that, I'll have to look into it. Thanks! And I don't have a super regimented method. I keep a pair in a 15 gallon with some driftwood and a ton of moss. I boil alder cones for a supply of black water and then just let them do their thing. I let the fry stay in with the parents and I get a decent survival rate

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 05:58:04 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

How do you keep moss alive? Mine barely grow at all. They don't die, but they don't grow either. I may have to go for indian almond leaves for black water it seems.

treycartier91 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 04:58:34 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Is any fish ever really "domesticated"?

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:39:09 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Well, B. splendens found in the shop have better stamina and are much more aggressive than their wild counterparts, so it is possible to argue that B. splendens has been domesticated somewhat.

has_a_bigger_dick ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:38:50 on August 4, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

are they like that because they were actually bred to fight or some shit?

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:49:24 on August 4, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Yes. B. splendens and B. smaragdina are the traditional fighters of thailand, and B. splendens was bred even harder for aggressiveness.

atomfullerene ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:47:16 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Yup. Goldfish and koi are the classic example, but really lots of aquarium fish are properly domesticated in the classic sense...color variation, behavioral differences from wildtypes, adaptations to surviving and breeding in captivity.

IggySorcha ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 12:08:10 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Were it mine, it'd be Cardinal Tetras and Cory Cats.

KaraWolf ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 04:22:07 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Not OP but I did a 125 gallon tank like that with a betta in it. Other occupants included; marble hatchets, rummy nose rasboras, neon green rasboras, lemon tetras, cardinals and a red tailed shark. Annnd that was maybe 1/2 stocked when I had to take it down :( was wondering if cories would play nice with the shark. The schools were amazing to watch.

[deleted] ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 04:44:52 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That sounds amazing. I remember my parents' 55-gallon from when I was a kid, they had a school of 30 neons and a bunch of mollies in there. The neons would school and split all the time--watching them is probably what got me into the hobby in the first place!

KaraWolf ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:12:59 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

It really was. All corners of the tank had some kind of activity. And hide and go seek with the shark was fun to play on guests. Up till that tank I hadn't had propper schooling species- they were all schoaling and low numbers. 14 rummy nose rasboras let me tell you! Tight school everywhere except for that ONE guy whos a little slow so when HE catches up everybody gets turned around and now the whole things turned back around. Word to the wise-rummys do NOT like pure cold water changes. Oops. Didn't lose any but learned my lesson there! The neon green rasboras swarmed like bees. Seemed kinda meh but I ended up with only 5 :( all my schools were supposed to be 12+. I know a guy who did a 75 gallon neon tank. That thing was mesmerizing to watch. XD

CrownTheKingSlayer ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 05:40:57 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Not necessarily, I'd imagine Betta males in the wild would choose to avoid each other rather than fight so in a tank this big that could replicate their natural environment, they would just swim away from each other. Betta males fight in small tanks because of confined space.

PotassiumTriiodide ยท 14 points ยท Posted at 06:07:18 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Betta fights used to be a thing. Well they still are, but the point is bettas were once bred almost exclusively to be aggressive little fucks. At this point though you probably could house two or three bettas in this tank just fine. They fight for territory, so if they have more than they care to defend they just kinda flare up at each other and then swim away.

nanozeus2014 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 07:39:29 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

also you might want to lower the water height. it will put stress on him to swim that high to get air. and put things for him to rest on near the top attached to the glass by suction cups and floating plants he can rest on at night and during the day. and a few cups cut in half for blowing bubbles in atached to the glass at the top and also a few homemade coconut caves :) they love those!!!

salgat ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:27:42 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

The sad thing is that this is still considered small for its natural habitat. People don't realize how small aquariums are compared to the real thing. 5 gallons is like a tiny glass cage.

sarahmagoo ยท 23 points ยท Posted at 01:02:02 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

But in their natural habitat they don't use ALL of the space they have, they set up smaller territories within it.

salgat ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 02:08:59 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

That doesn't change how much room they have to swim and be simulated.

sarahmagoo ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 02:13:20 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Then I'd say that's the difference between keeping one in a small bowl vs a 5 gallon tank.

Luquitaz ยท 15 points ยท Posted at 03:41:27 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Trust me, the betta doesn't care. You're anthropomorphizing them too much.

MirthSpindle ยท 25 points ยท Posted at 00:56:00 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Yes, but fish don't have the same emotions as humans. They won't be depressed and feel longing for the vast cruel wilderness with its various biotic restrictions. The wild isnt just a big tank, it is extremely stressful.

salgat ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:10:08 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Even fish can demonstrate stress and boredom due to small tanks. Mind you I'm not saying 5g is too small for a betta.

MirthSpindle ยท 7 points ยท Posted at 04:14:32 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Of course they can. But i doubt the fish are sad that they are in a tank as opposed to in the deceptively large expanse of wild aquatic environments.

No excuse to put fish in unsuitable aquariums though.

show_me_ur_fave_rock ยท 11 points ยท Posted at 02:55:47 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

A wild betta will stake out about a square meter of territory, and this tank has a footprint close to double that.

salgat ยท -3 points ยท Posted at 03:21:54 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Territory is not the same as habitat. My point is that these things live in thousands of gallons, which gives perspective on how small these tanks actually are. I'm not saying they can't live fine in these tanks or that this is an issue.

TheToxicTurtle7 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:14:10 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

also be sure to change out 10% of the water weekly. and add drops to treat the water weekly. im assuming the tank already has already been prepped with nitrite/nitrate colony ?

JosVermeulen ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 08:13:58 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Why would he need to change 10% weekly with a betta in a 300g tank? And what do you mean by "prepped with nitrite/nitrate colony"?

nanozeus2014 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:30:31 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

replacing 10% of the water prevents old tank syndrome :

http://m.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?articleid=1466

(not sure if he needs to do it weekly in such a large tank though)

JosVermeulen ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:38:39 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Well ofcourse do water changes prevent old tank syndrome, which is just raised NO3 and TDS levels which have slowly been creeping up. Don't understand where you got the 10% for a 300g tank with one betta though?

And what is that prepping of the "nitrite/nitrate colony" you are talking about?

nanozeus2014 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 08:47:30 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)
JosVermeulen ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:10:30 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Uhm, do you actually understand where these values come from, or are you just parotting what you read on websites without understanding the context?

And once again, what is this prepping of the "nitrite/nitrate colony" you are talking about?

Or is this all something you read somewhere without actually understanding it?

keithfa26 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 12:39:30 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

With 1 single betta a water change would more than likely never be needed in a tank this size. Obviously also depends on outside factors but I wouldn't be doing anything with that tank for months if I had a single fish of that size.

JosVermeulen ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 12:50:01 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Exactly. I was just calling out that person why tries to act like an expert. We have enough of those so-called experts that cause people to come to our subreddit and to forums asking for help because they've been misled. nanozeus2014 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 09:21:36 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

the prepping of the nitrite/nitrate colony was referring to cycling the tank that's all (sorry for the wording if that caused confusion)

as for values, I was referring to water level values (and hence the 10% change in water level but again i dont know what that weekly change would be with a 300 g tank)

JosVermeulen ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 10:07:05 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)*

You didn't respond to me, but to OP. So I just saw this.

Also, you don't get a nitrite and nitrate colony, but a bacteria colony, which consists of nitrosomonas and nitrospira (and some others, but in lower concentrations). It seems like you mostly parrot what you've once read.. Please understand the subjects you are giving advice on before actually giving advice. Using weird concepts like nitrate/nitrite colony (as if you're growing NO2 and NO3) will only confuse new people and it still seems to confuse you. Please don't do this, we have enough issues with bad information as is.

nanozeus2014 ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 10:23:50 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

hi as stated i made a mistake in wording lol. all i meant was cycling the tank which as you correctly pointed out was about nitrosomibas and nb (thanks for that clarificarion btw)

hyene ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 17:13:19 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

Betta's love to build bubble nests, which are destroyed by bubblers. but bubblers are great for aeration/stagnation so maybe keep one, or move them both to one side of the tank so betta has a quiet spot on the other side. when i have bettas i usually make sure they have a spot where they can build bubble nests in a quiet corner with some moss or floating plants.

drteq ยท -21 points ยท Posted at 00:39:28 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)*

It seems like you're cycling a new tank with a betta? It is swimming around / twitching which looks bad to me.

EDIT:

Keep downvoting me, but my concern with cycling has nothing to do with the ammonia load from one fish. From my experience the tank itself fluctuating between the nitrate/nitrite battle still causes massive issues during this time unless properly monitored. Have killed many fish in many tanks and was simply pointing it out. So .i.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest if the OP has been on this sub long enough to know about the betta-tank-size circlejerk, OP knows about cycling.

Even if it was uncycled it would take a ridiculously long time for ammonia to reach detectable levels, especially with plants in the tank.

Even without the plants. It's like the equivalent of me taking a shit inside a football stadium.

50yd line or end zone?

opheliakitty ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:27:04 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

End zone all the way, baby.

giant_rat ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 05:18:53 on June 3, 2017 ยท (Permalink)

With a tank that big, you could probably dump in a school of tetras and it wouldn't matter. Fish-in cycling works with larger tanks. Imagine cycling that by dumping in large amounts of pure ammonia daily...fuck that

Rofl. How can you judge that?

Oooh the tank is clean, mustn't be cycled OP IS LITERALLY SATAN
