And your girlfriend just- no, wait... Yeah, just left you.
The first survey (not the collecting of information, the one about politics) is literally just making sure you're paying attention, so who knows: maybe they're just checking to see if you're being truthful.
funkyb · 12 points · Posted at 00:34:43 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
Turns out both OKcupid and Google are just front end for data nerds to get toys.
Got $1 on my first survey for like 45 seconds (actually paying attention to the questions too, it was about political opinions, same sex marriage, use of unmanned drones, involvement in syria, and whatnot)
And who's the say the government won't force them to hand over the information that they collected about you? It's happened countless times before. This isn't about not trusting Google, it's about not trusting the government.

How'd you get offered the survey? App just says "Thanks for signing up for Google Opinion Rewards. We'll send you a notification when you're approved to answer surveys."
phulton · 5 points · Posted at 01:58:16 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
Pretty cool, earned $1.00 on my first real survey.
Looks like it won't let you apply partial credit to purchases though. An artist I follow released an album today, which surprisingly to me Google has, but it wont let me apply the $1.00 to the $9.99 total price.
This app is tricky, as it does check a bunch of things to make sure you're in the U.S.
First, you'll need an American account. You can easily create one (and use it side-by-side with your usually one) with a VPN (I think I used TunnelBear to create mine) and a fake address in the USA. You don't even need a credit card to create one.
Then, this app check for your current location, so you need an application that allow you to fake this data. I know that XPrivacy allow that (Open it, Google Opinion Rewards, Menu, Settings, and change latitude and longitude). I'm not sure if there are other apps that allow you to do so.
For anyone curious, I've used "Latitude: 38.897701, Longitude: -77.036527"
This allowed me to do the sample survey, but I don't know if it works with "real" surveys as I have to be "approved" yet.
Two things that go wrong: TunnelBear on my computer keeps getting stuck at "connecting". Also, installing xprivacy on my phone causes bootloops. Every single time. Running PA if that matters.
You can use TunnelBear on your phone (that's what I did, and you can even create an account directly from it).
For XPrivacy, I don't know. Check that you have the latest XPosed Framework installed. No problem on Stock here.
It's opensource anyway, so you can report bugs here: https://github.com/M66B/XPrivacy/issues
I have an US Google account/Wallet but still wont load, I've tried with HotSpot Shield and nothing, perhaps is like the Play Store tied to your SIM card as well.

I have an US wallet/account, but doesn't work for me...
if they made it available everywhere do you have any idea how many people would get these surveys that their scope wouldn't apply to?
There is simply no reason to make this app global - it would only decrease the amount of $ they could award per survey to the point that almost no one would participate.
Like if it was available in the country I'm in now people would spend all day checking this app for themselves. And most of them wouldn't be able to afford anything that these surveys were purposed for.
U.S Only. Its ridiculous why internet services are not globally launched. Understand it with services like Music, Movies etc but why Internet based services? Isnt the internet supposed to be global?
hagah2 · 6 points · Posted at 08:07:56 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
I reckon a lot of these surveys are going to be about certain products. These probably will be quite region specific to the USA. Though I'm also bummed out that I can't use the service, I hope maybe we from the rest of the world can use it too someday.
jshap70 · 4 points · Posted at 23:28:14 on November 6, 2013 · (Permalink)
haha... the fucking starter survey was really funny...
Yep. All you gotta do is answer incriminating opinion questions to make it easy for agencies to track you down and either buy you out or detain you, and you'll get barely enough money so that you can pretend that if you give over enough of your information, you MIGHT be able to afford one song or app. YAY!

Is anyone else having a problem where it crashes immediately after selecting a google account? Is this because I downloaded the kit kat play services APK..?
Draxus · 2 points · Posted at 06:58:58 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
I also had crashing, and also downloaded the kit kat play services, search, launcher, etc. What fixed it for me was clearing the data and cache for play services.
Hey so I managed to get it to work in the UK, but as others have mentioned, it requires a US google account (I'm originally from California).
However I did not need to fake location data, I simply input my US zip code instead of letting it detect my location. I got through the into survey just fine, but I'll report back if I get any more surveys,
Just got another 96 cents from a survey about Google Play customer service. :D

if they made it available everywhere do you have any idea how many people would get these surveys that their scope wouldn't apply to?
There is simply no reason to make this app global - it would only decrease the amount of $ they could award per survey to the point that almost no one would participate.
Like if it was available in the country I'm in now people would spend all day checking this app for themselves. And most of them wouldn't be able to afford anything that these surveys were purposed for.

Some of them I can understand, but I don't see any reason for this to be US only.

I was being sarcastic
Kiwi3007 · 1 points · Posted at 22:32:52 on November 6, 2013 · (Permalink)
I know. I was trying to say that I can understand some features being US only, but I can't think of a reason for this one.

Are these opinions and "about myself" data tied to my Google account or is the data submitted anonymous?
In other words, will Google use this data to determine what to show my Google account?

Nope

It's a mobile version of Google Consumer Surveys: http://www.google.com/insights/consumersurveys/how
The surveys are anonymous.

JamesR624 · -7 points · Posted at 01:24:37 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
Yep. All you gotta do is answer incriminating opinion questions to make it easy for agencies to track you down and either buy you out or detain you, and you'll get barely enough money so that you can pretend that if you give over enough of your information, you MIGHT be able to afford one song or app. YAY!

imahotdoglol · 0 points · Posted at 18:34:38 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
Basically, there is no proof of what he said, yet it's ok cuase some people don't like the government?
This whole NSA shit is stupid, If you have some claim that is outragous, but is agianst the NSA, people believe, no questions asked.
But if you try to say that they aren't or question that claim, suddenly you're wrong, stupid and are lying.
It's a shitty clusterfuck of hype and bandwagon.

There's a lot of people who think that if you don't love the government and Google, you must be some kind of loser.
Shows how effective the brainwashing is.

Where?
Where is one person who says that?
One post, one article, one anything. Or is this #55685688 of hyperbole bullshit.

I don't see how "what type of car do you plan on buying" is incriminating... Did you get some "where is the body buried?" questions?

Is anyone else having a problem where it crashes immediately after selecting a google account? Is this because I downloaded the kit kat play services APK..?
Draxus · 2 points · Posted at 06:58:58 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)
I also had crashing, and also downloaded the kit kat play services, search, launcher, etc. What fixed it for me was clearing the data and cache for play services.

I can't get past the spinning circle after I press "Get started". US account, US location, 4.4, ...
twilighthunter · 1 points · Posted at 15:40:21 on November 7, 2013 · (Permalink)

One of the survey questions in the first survey (the example one) said a statement and then told me to enter the number three in the submission box to show that I'm paying attention. What was that supposed to measure?
