If I recall correctly, didn't they run like a half-year-long "Preserve your free 15gb by clicking OK" campaign? I am quite certain, because I still have my 15gb, and I kept it by opening the link and clicking one button.

Never bought a windows phone but still have 30gb. Are you sure it was a deal for windows phones?

glowinghamster45 ยท 110 points ยท Posted at 23:01:54 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Nope, it was 15 for signing up, then 15 more if you set up auto camera upload. But technically as soon as you set up a Windows phone the backup is enabled, whereas you have to go into settings and check a box for iOS and Android.

emeraldcocoaroast ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:08:29 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

When setting up an iOS device, backup is automatically enabled unless the user chooses not to use iCloud.

glowinghamster45 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:41:05 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Not talking about backups, talking about OneDrive. And since windows phone uses OneDrive for the backup, they get the 15 gig bonus without having to hit extra buttons.

Actually your're right. The loyalty bonus apparently is staying since it doesn't have a label saying it will go away.

"The storage limit for all free OneDrive accounts will become 5 GB. If you currently have a free account with a 15 GB storage limit, that limit will reduce to 5 GB. All new free accounts will have 5 GB storage. The 15 GB camera roll storage bonus will also be discontinued for free accounts. These changes will start rolling out in early 2016.

I did that but it only extended the expiration date. Mine still shows 25GB of the 30GB will expire by Aug 10th. Are you sure your Microsoft account page for OneDrive doesn't give an expiration date for each additional storage bonus? I'm nearly certain once that expires it'll go back to 5GB, at least for me.

You don't really get the point of a back up solution, do you?

themailboxofarcher ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 04:27:25 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Onedrive isn't a backup solution and doesn't advertise itself that way. It's a way to synchronize your useful stuff so it's available on all devices.

If you think any backup solution for a computer involves the cloud then I don't think you get the point. Do you have any concept of how long it takes to download a computer worth of information?

Plus, it doesn't matter what you want. Servers cost money. So they're going to offer what they can afford and charge what they need.

SaltTM ยท -8 points ยท Posted at 23:09:04 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's the point, Microsoft knows this else they wouldn't have done this in general. Those that cared for their space got reminded for like a year, every news outlet covered that news, etc... reminders leading up to it and lol it's peoples own fault for not paying attention. I think this ultimately lead up to this point because people abusing the unlimited space (literally uploading terabytes of data) and they wanted to regain some hard drive space.

Though I believe they did not email you regarding it because that's too easy. I never got an email about it, found out via twitter/news outlets.

That doesn't all of a sudden make an email a notification.

I said notifications to start with. That would include the popups they do in their "notification" place on the bottom left, and not be exclusively emails. I then had a sentence about how I got Microsoft student emails that I ignore.

You asked "when aren't emails notifications" and I was confused as fuck because I never said they weren't until I replied because I had no clue what the fuck you were getting at.

Occupier_9000 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 19:55:59 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's not the point. It's disingenuous. A form of theft by deception. Like those 'free with rebate' deals you get on electronics but you have to mail in this barcode that the company knows a certain percentage of people will accidentally throw out.

"Oh well it should've been easy to mail a letter/click a button the fault is with you" might mean that they aren't legally liable for anything---but everyone should point out that it is dishonest business practice. The equivalent of neener neener I'm not touching you. Microsoft is a shitty company (for numerous reasons not just this one) and ought to be punished by consumers not using their products whenever possible (which isn't always because they are an anti-competitive monopoly in certain markets).

AbbaZabbaFriend ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 21:20:15 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Lol whatever man they gave CLEAR warning of what was happening. Should they call everyone up and make sure they understand?

Occupier_9000 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 01:18:03 on July 11, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I mean, when companies rip people off with 'free' rebate offers they are required to state that to need to mail in a barcode or whatever. The fact that they write this in plain text means that no one has grounds to sue them. It doesn't alter the fact that they are disingenuously hoping someone will miss it. It's almost like you expect that the sort of 'I covered my ass technically' excuse holds any water outside of the context questions of legal liability. As though that flys IRL to also convince those pointing out shitty behavior to change their minds. They are holding people's data hostage for money. It's dishonest. These sorts of dismissive excuses are why people hate lawyers.

Kansas_cty_shfl ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 23:59:13 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I presume it was a free promotion that was utilized way more than they expected, so they decided to slash storage for people that weren't using it or didn't care in order to make it reasonable to continue the program. It wasn't much of a hoop either. I clicked a link in one of several emails I received, took less than 10 seconds. It's not like it was some 2 hour registration with a bunch of personal data, or a monthly requirement to keep clicking links to keep it active.

[deleted] ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:08:51 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

People used the free space one drive initially offered to store terabytes of illegally shared material. From what I remember.

BottledUp ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:16:51 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

A promotion says "you get stuff for a limited amount of time", you take it, then after 6 months it says "well, you can keep it even longer, but click here for that". If you don't click, why the hell do you think you should get anything for free? In what fairyland do you live?

Which was a valid complaint against MS when they went through with cutting the plans originally. Why did MS promise us 15 GB if they were unsure of their ability to maintain this obligation? For the record I still have my 15 GB.

Yup, and I actually called MS customer service and told them an issue and the dude gave me 3 free months of 50GB to give me time to move my 25GB out... I guess I am the sucker though because I ended up storing like 35GB now and just gave in and paid the $2 for the 50GB per month, just to have everything in sync all the time. I swear, one day I am going to clean up my onedrive account and cancel the service, but 2 bucks a month was really nothing, so why not. And that is how MS got me hooked into OneDrive

Could have swore I had like 25GB free from M$ for awhile. They had Microsoft MyPhone, Windows Mobile cloud sync for everything. Contacts, files, call history, texts, pictures were available online. They also had a LogMeIn-esque service after Vista launched, which was a beta invite-only program that they bundled with my SkyDrive.

Then they went all Azure/OneDrive/Office365/Outlook.com and discontinued MyPhone and their 'Sky' suite. I was sent an e-mail saying I could get all of my files on a DVD set and mailed to me since they had to switch. I opted in and probably paid for the DVD service, but never got them. The only thing I got was an early sign-up and claimed a sweet outlook.com address.

What really bugged me about that scene, though, was the spacebar. I use spaces, but I don't use the spacebar to insert them (and I definitely don't do 8-space tabstops. That's completely unreadable). I use the tab key like everybody else, and have my IDE translate 1 tab = 4 spaces (2 spaces if I'm doing xml or json).

the other "safe" like, "all my stuff is gone, because the feds seized the servers" which is what happened last time. I can't weigh in much on that this time, it is meant to be better this time round, but like any "cloud" service, your stuff is only as safe as the parent company...

wedgie ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 18:06:35 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Naw, I'm joking more or less. I use Dropbox as one of my backup sources (nothing much I have is very confidential, and if I do need to backup something remotely that is sensitive, I encrypt it myself), but I know that several services exist that follow proper protocols and standards and meet specifications.

Kazumara ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:15:34 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think eventually they were able to put the files from the mega servers up for a last time download basically or am I confusing that? But I guess on that front you're right, they seem to be more at risk of sweeping law enforcement action

safe as the parent company

Well but not really if they don't have the key they can't leak anything, unless a hacker or law enforcement manage to change out the client software somehow to obtain your key through mega servers.

Esscocia ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:25:31 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I think what he is really trying to say is that if they are taken down again, its likely their cloud servers will go down too and so you will lose your files.

The chances of something like that happening to google or microsoft are slim to none.

Kazumara ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:49:40 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But that's exactly what my first two sentences adressed

askjacob ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:55:54 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I mean as far as availability, not content. Also as far as any kind of responsiveness or service. If there is any kind of issues, you will be one of millions. Your complaints won't be worth a damn.

Even as a paying client you will be the bottom of the barrel compared to their enterprise clientele. Working through some enterprise channels, even those are very stratified, and in major issues unless you are at the top you are ignored.

SLAs are of no teeth, what good is saving a few $$ on the month when you missed critical things within your org? It sucks for IT as they look like the bad guys for a what really was a possibly a poor financial decision, they can't influence the external vendor and just feebly log another incident...

holocaustic_soda ยท -4 points ยท Posted at 23:31:08 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Your files will be safe, because even the feds won't be able to crack into your child porn collection.

askjacob ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 01:44:07 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

again, what I mean is, what happens when you go to login and you get a "Service not available" screen like so many did back with the previous mega debacle? Sure, use your backups. Problem is, a lot of people found out back then what a backup really is - those using it for non-nefarious reasons that is...

Remember, your 1st "copy" elsewhere is just maybe a copy. Your backup should never be a permanently synchronised and online thing like dropbox is (ransomware will happily encrypt that too, and before you are aware of it) and an untested and unverified backup is just a hope and wish rather than a real backup.

There are too many stories, mine included of the backup that was empty, or unreadable, or didn't scoop up everything...

When you mentioned the cops, I thought you were worried about incriminating evidence.

When it comes to "what if I lose my files?" Oh heeeell no, I don't trust any of this "cloud" bullshit for backups. The only backup I use is me, myself, and my NAS.

These clouds are so you can share files with others easily.

Byeforever ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 00:30:50 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It seems fine to me, and if I have anything really important I double back-it up anyways. I'm also using google photos to backup stuff. Just don't forget your password for mega, the system is encrypted to the point where they claim they literally can't do anything but delete the account (requires email verification so someone can't just do it to smite you) if you lost it and the 'master encryption key' file.

Alternatively just make multiple google accounts and then you can easily have access to 60 GBs (if you have an android device or a friend with one, under 'accounts' in settings there is an option to make a new google account and you can rattle them off pretty quickly). They used to prevent you from logging into drive.google.com on a pc with multiple accounts at the same time, but they appear to have stopped doing that.

cutestrawberrycake ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:15:20 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I've used it for a while, until files I deleted months ago started popping up again in my drive. It messed up my order of files as a lot of things that I update over time suddenly had all the previous versions dotted around which was a huge pain in the ass, and proves they don't delete your data even when you empty your trash bin. Good for storage that doesn't matter all that much like movies, but don't trust it with anything else.

That's neat that they do it automatically for sure. I've actually got an app on my phone called IFTTT that I've configured to also automatically take any picture I take or upload to Facebook directly to my Google Drive account as well. I don't have to do anything, it's all behind the scenes stuff.

Technology kicks ass.

Katastic_Voyage ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:27:11 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

It should be noted that the Google CPP guide is NOT a guide that everyone should adhere to. Google's C++ policy translates to, "We were C coders and hated and/or didn't understand C++, and now we're paying for it out the ass with code rot." IIRC, It's even mentioned in the document itself.

They don't use exceptions, for example. Which is outright insane to say blanketly. It makes sense for consoles (many CPUs of which don't even support them), it makes sense for the real-time OS for the Mars Rover (no exceptions, no iostream, no templates, use memory pools for allocations, no operator overloading except new/delete). It does not make sense for general purpose GUI code.

Here's one article debunking their guide.

cahphoenix ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 23:45:28 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yes. Except MOST of the time programmers use both tabs and spaces together. You then guess at the presentation. It's a really stupid argument. If anyone is worried about spaces taking up extra space then I'd say they haven't done much coding on team projects.

TotallyManner ยท 5 points ยท Posted at 00:03:08 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

MOST of the time programmers use both tabs and spaces together.

Not for indentation alone, I would hope.

cahphoenix ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:42:52 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

For indentation alone?

What I meant was it is human nature to use spaces and tabs. MOST of the time there will be some spaces and some tabs used for indentation. You use spaces between keywords/variables/tokens/etc. Then you use tabs to flesh out the layout. It's impossible not to do this because you have to use spaces.

You end up with spaces and tabs on the same line. That can't always be fixed easily on different clients. You then have several people "fixing the layout". Spaces can only be a single spaces. There is no problem. Pretty much every environment also has a "use tabs as spaces" option. Use it and never have to screw with tabs again.

Every project I've ever worked on has had a NO TABS rules in the standard. I don't see any argument against it to be honest. Feel free to give me one.

TotallyManner ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:23:35 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

bkuhns ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 00:06:03 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Specifying presentation is one thing. Forcing it is another. I want to flip out every time I open a source file at work who's author decided 2 spaces are enough indentation. I can only assume they prefer this so their 15-scope indented code fits horizontally on their screen. Anyway, my brain can't handle that, I have to concentrate so much harder on following the indentation to understand the code. If 2 spaces work for you, great, but why punish me when my brain prefers 4?

Okay, so let's solve this argument once and for all, okay? WE'RE GONNA GO IT! Specify the presentation of the structure of the code using tabs (bare with me). If you want to vertically align things within the structure, use spaces. Yes, really. Now if I have a 4-space tab setting, everything renders fine and the in-line vertical alignment is preserved because that's done with spaces. If someone else decides 3-space tabs are where it's at, the same file will still render perfectly!

I've been doing this for years and have converted several of my co-workers. They've never looked back!

We can have our cake and eat it too!

Yeah, but then you have to manage tab stop settings in all of the different tools you use, your editor, your differ, the command line, indexing results, etc. 4 spaces is 4 spaces, whether I'm looking at it in Visual Studio or Vim or Windiff or catted on the command line or whatever. But tab could be 4 en-spaces in one, 8 in another, etc.

[deleted] ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 00:41:53 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

First off, you go on Google's Local Guides page and sign up. Then all you have to do is open the Google Maps app and go in the Contribute tab, then you can give specifications on certain shops/restaurants, give reviews (you must write a review to get points, a rating alone doesn't work), send photos (tip: on Android, once you take a photo of a store with your normal camera app, you can press the Share button and select Google Maps to contribute a photo), etc.

You gain one point per contribution, which take time to earn I tell you, but once you have 200 points, you reach Level 4 and obtain the Google Drive space!

How about explicitly stating this in the plan description? I don't want to use a service that has unwritten rules about it's usage. Example: pay $X get 100gb cloud storage - absolutely fine, pay $Y get unlimited* cloud storage! *rules and conditions apply, service may be terminated if we think you are using it unfairly - some bullshit right there.

SanityInAnarchy ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 02:50:54 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

But when you have people uploading 10+ terrabytes each, that's going against the intent of the unlimited plan...

Wait, why? You just said the intent was to backup your PC. Some PCs have 10+ terabytes of storage. Most cheap PCs come with 1-2T on a spinning disk.

In other words:

The point of an unlimited plan is so you can use your drive and not have to worry about running out of space.

Only you can't do that, because if you happen to have a large enough amount of space to back up -- or if Microsoft didn't update this to keep up with the times as people get more and more storage -- then you find there really was a limit. Worse, everyone blames you for finding the limit, instead of Microsoft for dishonestly calling it "unlimited".

In fact, from what you're describing, the limit is apparently "Once you have tens of terabytes." So the much saner thing for them to do would've been to set a limit of, say, 5T. Most people will never approach it, so it's still functionally unlimited, but at least it's explicit now.

Or, they could go the other route: Acknowledge that there will be the occasional outlier, and support them anyway. Backblaze claims unlimited storage, and as far as I know, people really are backing up multiple terabytes to them without complaint. It turns out there aren't all that many people who have that much storage on a single machine, and the amount of positive PR you'd get from covering those people anyway probably outweighs the cost. And if you're afraid of someone just using this as a cheap alternative to AWS for an actual business, you can deal with that by saying this backup is only for personal use, and offering a separate tier of support for businesses.

So the problem isn't that you can't have unlimited, even their basic notion of unlimited that you're hinting at here. The problem is they didn't deliver that, they panicked and immediately limited people when it got bad. That's a shitty bait-and-switch and is at best naive on their part, and they get no sympathy from me for that.

Think of it like this, we all pay for roads (Socialism, OMG!) would you be OK with a 4 lane highway going to a dead end town of 50 people?

Nobody ever promised unlimited roads. That's the issue.

Some people took the piss and uploaded 50TB...

More than 75tb, apparently.

Sounds like they were following the intent perfectly -- using the service and not worrying about space.

It was unlimited and then Microsoft amended their terms.

That would've actually been more honest than what they did, which was to slowly start enforcing the limit before it was ever announced anywhere.

Gmail did unlimited right, back in the day -- they just set the limit to more storage than people had ever gotten with free email, and then kept increasing it over time so most people never had to delete a single email. That would've been the smart thing to do here, if Microsoft didn't want to provide something unlimited.

SanityInAnarchy ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 02:25:15 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Their fucking marketing department wrote checks that technical department couldn't cache in...

...

...technically...sort of correct? Their technical department evidently couldn't store this guy's data, even temporarily, so I guess they couldn't cache it. Still...

and it wasn't like someone went and used a whole TB and Microsoft was like "hey wait", iirc someone was using close to, or over 100TB and had gotten the unlimited plan on sale to begin with.

/r/DataHoarder

Not in this case, but there are people who legitimately want to store hundreds of TB of data for their own purposes.

FloppY_ ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:32:47 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Well, the vast majority of users will never need more than the 1TB that most services offer right now and I'm sure the offers will increase along with file-size in the future.

DigitalCatcher ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:04:45 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Hopefully the users over at /r/DataHoarder won't ruin that for us.

cuentanueva ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 01:46:03 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

We have phones that record 4K video. With that in mind an hour of 4K video on an iPhone could be like 20GB (is actually a little more). So that 1 TB is just 50 hours of 4K video on an iPhone.

But sure, I know most people don't shoot 4K yet (but will since it will be more and more common). With 1080p that's the default for most people, that's 8GB an hour. So 125 hours of 1080p video.

If you take a couple videos on Birthdays, Christmas and other Holidays, or when you are on vacation, you can reach that 1TB without much effort.

I agree that today maybe it's enough but most because people aren't yet used to backing stuff up on the cloud and so on. When it gets more common and most videos end up there, it won't be enough.

As you said, the tiers will probably increase but still that 1TB isn't THAT much space anymore.

FloppY_ ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:02:29 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It is enough if you don't shoot video.

cuentanueva ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 08:18:50 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's also enough if you don't use it.

I was saying that people are using more and more storage. Files are getting bigger and people use them more and more. It adds up.

michaelfarker ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:08:51 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It is definitely an interface that hides my favorite features. I feel like there is a lot I could do if I understood it better but I have been poking away at it.

My current source for new things I would like is the New to Prime - Songs Recently Added to Prime list. You have to scroll down a ways to get to it on the New to Prime page. Within the first twenty different musicians I usually find a song I love, and often it is a band I had not heard of.

I also like the way you can see lyrics for a lot of songs by clicking on the bar in the middle of the song's page. You can read through them by holding and dragging or rewind to a specific section by clicking on it.

NeoCoN7 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:41:42 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It might be different in other countries but Amazon video is shit in the UK.

On a lot of older shows you'll get the first season or two free then the rest you have to rent/buy despite having a prime account.

anothercookie90 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:37:05 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The UI is horrendous keeps me from using the app. I just wanted to pause the video not fastforward rewind or look up who is in the damn show.

I have never had a refund refused on Amazon, to be honest. Always a very hassle free process. To get other things done, you might need to stay on hold for a long time, but you'll probably get what you want.

AJRiddle ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 23:09:00 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I've been using Amazon for over a decade now and had prime almost since it came out. Their customer service has gone downhill in the last year.

I took me 3 online chats and 3 phone calls to get a refund for an item I never received. They kept trying to ask me if I checked for the item or asked my neighbors if they received it when their own tracking number showed it was never shipped. When I explained they never shipped it and the tracking number shows this they just kept asking if I had received it in broken English.

I had to ask for a supervisor and the supervisor wouldn't send a replacement, only a refund. It was bizarre.

I'm considering Amazon. You can get united storage for 60 bucks a year, or unlimited photo storage (uncompressed unlike Google photos) for like 10 bucks a year.

Seems cheap. I'd rather pay a nominal fee than accept all these compromises.

Anyone tried Amazon?

Could you post the message for us to look for the email? I can't find any such message. My only message about this literally gives me a free one year 365 account with 1TB of 'free' storage. The 'free plan bonus' is going away, and so is the 'camera bonus'. I think the scumbag MS holds true. I have PRIME + a Fire Phone that came with a LOT of bonuses so I'll take a look at their storage. It would be nice to know what the hell happened with those MS emails though...

I pay a monthly rate of $10-per. With it, I get the entire office suite as well as a terabyte of OneDrive space. The best part is that I can share that subscription with five other people (they each get their own TB as well as their own Office suite). Frankly, for what I'm getting, I'm happy to pay the $10/month.

ohwowlol ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 04:10:58 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

If you use office for 5 years, you've paid $600 for it. Not exactly what I'd call a good deal.

TheDeadlySinner ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:31:37 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Uh, you're ignoring the 6 TB of storage they get for those five years. Which is a better deal than any other cloud storage that I can think of.

manskies ยท 38 points ยท Posted at 23:02:02 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Wasn't it initially 15GB then it went down to 5GB, but it stayed at 15GB if you signed up for something saying you wanted to keep your 15GB?

TehJohnny ยท 16 points ยท Posted at 23:27:23 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

ctoan8 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 04:09:36 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I have 130 GB, of which 100 GB is from purchasing a Samsung Galaxy, so previously I had 30 GB and I can't remember the reasons either. They didn't cut the storage to 5 GB, I'm not aware of this cut until now. What I find ironic is that I bought a Lumia phone, and they upgraded my storage to 1TB, but then they cut the storage even to Lumia purchases, and now by buying a Galaxy phone, I got more storage than my previous purchase of the Lumia.

TheVexedGerman ยท 4 points ยท Posted at 00:03:42 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Way back in the days of SkyDrive you actually got 25 Gigs by signing up. Eventually they reduced that to 7 for new accounts and ones that didn't opt out. Some time later they increased the base to 15 with a 15 gig bonus for the camera roll.

While I am happy with my now 40 Gigs of free storage (25+15) I'd be a lot happier with the service if I didn't have to constantly check that Microsoft doesn't cut my storage.

From what I understand OneDrive is currently at its worst offering of all time, which is odd because I would have expected their offer to either grow or stay the same to continue to beat out the competition like Google or Dropbox.

crazyl999 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 00:31:40 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Honestly it seems like a push for them to get more people on Office 365 since that includes 1TB of space. Like others have already posted I opted in for the one year free Office 365 that was emailed out and will likely cancel before it renews and see what the market is like then.

anothercookie90 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 03:44:50 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You don't have to read through each email. They have subject lines that are clear as to what info it contains. This particular email's(the many they sent) was "Important Changes to your One Drive account"

If your One Drive storage was of importance to you, that should have been enough information to push you to give it at least a cursory glance.

Fun fact: If MS was perfectly capable of letting anyone who wanted, keep their space, they could have easily left things as they were and honored the implied intent of the original offer. Instead, more negative billing practices and holding people's data hostage.

I don't use OneDrive, so I don't really care, but it's silly to think that everyone should have to constantly monitor their e-mail, just in case some company decides to renege on their offers and start billing you.

Sure, I could switch to Linux, but it isn't as simple as a lot of raging people try to make it sound. Linux also has shortcomings as far as what I want out of a PC.

[deleted] ยท -9 points ยท Posted at 23:54:26 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

No, that's a planned excuse for M$. Hype it with unlimited knowing full and well that you WON'T provide that . Let a couple people pull this stunt and use it to SEVERELY neuter the capacity. Wait even longer, then neuter it, again, but make it OK, b/c you have an announcement that says "if you want to keep it" (as if someone's going to actively refuse extra space).

No one is going to read emails from M$ (spam folder automatically for the wise) and I imagine many never logged into their account to see the warning.

This is typical shit head business practices. Hype it, then cut service down, then kill the service and hope some people pay.

damstr ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:57:20 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I logged in today for something and I noticed they now offer office 365 for free for a year with 1TB of storage. Not a fix but some people may find it helpful.

DrPepper86 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 03:45:23 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Oddly enough, the plan I'm on is sort of the opposite:

$10/month for Office365 plus 1TB of OneDrive space and 60 Skype minutes a month (which, admittedly, I never touch)

Sebleh89 ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 23:42:51 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I still have my 30. For a good like six-eight months they let you opt in to keep your high storage because people were storing illegal movies and such on it. They're not scumbags simply because you either signed up too late, or missed the several emails that helped you.

PolarNavigator ยท 36 points ยท Posted at 22:13:11 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Not quite.

If after 9 months you are still over quota, your account will be locked. That means that you will not be able to access the content in your OneDrive until you take action.

If after 6 more months you fail to take action, your content may be deleted.

The thing that annoys me is that the Pictures folder (which my camera automatically copies into) is linked to OneDrive. I put something in Pictures, it ends up in OneDrive. How can I use the Pictures folder without all this OneDrive drama giving me headaches?

One drive deleted a very important file of mine. It was a spreadsheet I worked on a few months. Not only did they delete off their (cloud) system they 'synced' the change to all of my local systems which also deleted it. When I went back to reference it after a few months of not looking at it I found that it was gone. The support emails about stretched 3 weeks and culminating with an engineer from the team basically saying, "We're sorry but you're not getting your file back. It's gone."

On one hand they ruined hundreds of hours of work. On the other hand they gave 1 TB of storage free.

Edit: I do still use Onedrive but I now do weekly manual backups Amazon's Cloudrive which as far as I can tell is the best deal in terms of storage. It's completely unlimited for something like $60 / year.

Indeed, except with Seafile to an off-site server. I don't care if something happens to the server, the very nature of these syncing services is that the content is in multiple locations. If one goes down, you can just upload it to a new server unless somehow all your computers and the server go down at the same time.

I use Seafile over owncloud though because owncloud was slow and buggy for me. It feels like it actually polls for changes rather than just automatically uploading any changes or something.

I'm 28, and I despise gmail, always have. I hate the whole idea of "tagging" email vs. sorting it into separate folders using customized rules (which are a lot more powerful IMO). With Outlook my inbox (which is the very first thing you see when you open your email) is basically only personal emails from friends/family, everything else gets automatically sorted out. Outlook just feels so much more powerful, and makes so much more sense to me.

Oh and fuck conversational sorting, email is probably the worst way to have a conversation, that's what texting or skype is for. One thing I really love about Outlook is that I can see details about what's in any particular email at a glance using category colors, like this. What you're looking at is emails from a paid market analysis service, with different authors sending different kinds of analysis. So from the example you can see that any email from EWT.net written by Avi has a purple icon on it, and any email with a 24 hour chart has a black icon on it.

At the end of the day it's all about preferences though, and people use email for different purposes which could change those preferences.

edit: Ok so filters = rules, labels = folders, and conversation view isn't the work of Satan. I get it now, but there's still a lot of things I prefer about Outlook.

Kakkoister ยท 3 points ยท Posted at 22:53:56 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You can sort email into different folders and tabs using filter rules in GMail too... I do it for my work email so only client emails are in the main inbox, and anything else goes to other, like account info or promotions and shit like that which is related to software I used for work.

And the conversation type system is good.. what's not to like about it? You're able to instantly see what was said before without switching between tabs and looking for the previous emails. It lets an email flow, it's been a big aid for freelance work.

Cole7rain ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:02:27 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

You can sort email into different folders and tabs using filter rules in GMail too

Ok I feel stupid I guess you can do the same thing, I didn't realize filters = rules & labels = folders. I also just figured out that under labs you can get a preview plane just like Outlook has, which is awesome. I don't know how people survive without a preview pane.

There are still a few other things that bother me about gmail:

  1. The color category labels in Outlook is still an absolute necessity for me, and I don't see any equivalent in gmail.
  2. Outlook has a desktop client, which is nice for a number of reasons. One of them being because I can use the alt-tab keyboard shortcut to quickly swap back and forth between web browsing and email. The ctrl hotkeys for tabs in chrome aren't really super comfortable to use when you have more than 5-6 tabs open, which I do 90% of the time.
  3. The gmail categories function is definitely a completely different idea from the outlook function, and it also seems superfluous/redundant and you can't get rid of it (only hide it). Which brings me to my next point.
  4. A whole lot of default system labels which can't be removed, only hidden, which makes the hidden area ugly and messy.

The first one is pretty important, the other three are just kind of just me being nitpicky, but still.

And the conversation type system is good.. what's not to like about it? You're able to instantly see what was said before without switching between tabs and looking for the previous emails. It lets an email flow, it's been a big aid for freelance work.

See now that's where I can imagine conversation view would be useful, where you're sharing a lot of detailed information about an ongoing project or job. I guess my problem was that I didn't really have a need for it so I didn't have a chance to see how it might be useful.

  1. https://youtu.be/9VwqUArJzG8?t=1m44s

  2. You can't use Outlook desktop app with your Gmail account? I though it allows email addresses from other servers?

3/4. Why would how the hidden area look matter? It should have no affect on your actual usage of the app.

Cole7rain ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:11:21 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

https://youtu.be/9VwqUArJzG8?t=1m44s

The color category function in outlook is completely different (see my example in my original post).

Like I said when I sort things I want them out of my inbox, so I would use the skip inbox function on every filter. That's just color coding the equivalent of a folder, which is redundant if you're using the skip inbox function on your filters anyway.

You can't use Outlook desktop app with your Gmail account? I though it allows email addresses from other servers?

You can but gmail labels don't play nice with outlook, it's messy because labels and folders are not exact equivalents.

Also why would I use gmail.com instead of outlook.com, if I'm using the outlook desktop client anyway.

3/4. Why would how the hidden area look matter? It should have no affect on your actual usage of the app.

It seems to me the whole point of a hidden area is to hide labels you don't look at very often, but still use (otherwise why not just delete them?). So it's cluttered with all sorts of labels that you actually never use. A really nitpicky point admittedly, but even little annoyances can add up.

Kakkoister ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:35:38 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It seems to me the whole point of a hidden area is to hide labels you don't look at very often

Nah, for that make a Label called something like "Meh" or whatever you want, and then you make your not often looked at labels as sub-labels of that. Hiding is so you don't even see them, basically like deleting, but non-destructive.

glowinghamster45 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:09:55 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Outlook just feels so much more powerful, and makes so much more sense to me.

Technically, it sort of is. The back end of outlook.com email is an Exchange server, the tech for which is owned by Microsoft. Every other webmail is IMAP.

The average user wouldn't notice the difference, but there's a reason why companies with custom domains typically use Exchange for their internal email.

[deleted] ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 23:14:32 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

The Labels in Gmail are folders (actually show up as folders in Outlook 365) and with rules you can just do things like "IF attachments > 10MB THEN Skip Inbox and Label Big Files"

This is a super simple rule and is exactly the same as the age old Outlook rule "IF from Sender/Words in message THEN Move to Folder"

So basically the thing you hate about Gmail is exactly the same as the function you like in Outlook.

Which version is that?

fx32 ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:13:47 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Outlook was a mailclient, and has transformed/merged into a webservice -- both indeed quite powerful, out of necessity to get a grip on the chaos of inbound crap when you need to manage mail professionally.

Gmail has always been webmail, with a slightly different intention, aimed at providing a simple personal solution. It has a decent spamfilter, labels are less organized but it works pretty well paired with the good search algorithm Google has. I personally actually prefer Inbox (from Google) over the default Gmail interface, as it kinda forces me to keep on top of things, quickly swiping/snoozing/answering mails on my phone.

In the end though, I kind of despise email as a concept. It takes up too much attention, it's an endless unwanted queue, and the protocol is old and outdated. I get that mail is a necessary evil in many cases, but I'm happy that many companies are shifting towards "IRC 2.0" chat solutions like Slack/Hipchat/Rocketchat.

dolphins_unleashed ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 01:31:30 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

A lot of companies run exchange servers and they really work best with outlook, esp. if you also include meeting organization and calendars.

Nothing most personal users use but at least at my employer outlook is the standard (together with lync) and used each and every day and you don't get a choice to use something else.

Dropbox, 40gb. Free. (At least I got that when I bought my last phone a couple years ago, might have been part of a campaign... but surely they still have similar campaigns... and I already had Dropbox btw, so this was not a "new registers only" type of thing).

Actually going to look now, I currently have 52.25GB total space. And thats on the free, basic account. Which is pretty good if you ask me.

theflintseeker ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:26:58 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

GroovingPict ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:47:20 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Huh. Well this wasnt that type of "promotional" deal I guess. It was preinstalled when I bought my Galaxy S5 which is a couple years ago now if not more. And it was just something like "log in and start using Dropbox and we'll give you 40gb extra space for free" (though thinking about it maybe it was 50, cause I dont see how else I would have gotten 52.25 total). And there was no time limit or anything like that, cause that would surely have lapsed by now. And since I was already using Dropbox anyway and had intended to install and use it on the phone regardless, for me that was just free extra storage without needing to do anything for it, which was sweet because before that I think I had just 2GB.

StillsidePilot ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:43:01 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Really? Last I checked I had less than 10GB total.

GroovingPict ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:51:40 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah I think it was some sort of campaign when I bought my Galaxy S5, which was a couple of years ago now. It had the Dropbox app preinstalled and if I logged in I got 40gb extra space for free. Or maybe it was even a bit more than that seeing as how I now have 52.25 total and Im not sure how I would have gotten those extra 12.25 then.

theflintseeker ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:08:46 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Dropbox did the same thing with education accounts. You got a ton of space by being at a university, then they took it away.

IsoscelesDex ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:19:32 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I had a separate issue that appears to happen to a certain % of folks: my onedrive "sync" decided to delete ALL my local files, which it then started to update with the cloud.

I managed to save most things, and I still use OneDrive cloud since I pay for it. But absolutely went back to manual sync.

maliciousa ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:31:24 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I still have 10.1 TB in my Onedrive (the 10 I got for my Office-subscription and .1 from my Samsung tablet).

I was under the impression that the limit would be lowered to 1 TB when they changed the limits but, as I said, mine is still 10.1 TB, which is enough for me at least...

TogaLord ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 00:33:17 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I get one terabyte and I get to install the full MS office suite on 5 computers for 10 bucks a month. I also always get the latest version, so when office 2019 or whatever comes out I get all 5 of those updated at no extra cost.

Damn Microsoft and their unreasonableness. Stupid cloud providers and their expectation that people pay for service.

Off-site backups are good to have if your house burns down.

Not that Onedrive or Google Drive are good choices for this. There are many cloud backup providers that have way better options. Unlimited storage, strong encryption, and they also let you send them a hard drive with the initial data if your upload speed is slow.

There's a couple of different forum posts out there where people have been trying to resolve this for over a year.

Thank you! Still a scumbag thing to do. Surely Microsoft knew there are people who wouldn't read that. It wouldn't be a scumbag thing if they didn't try to charge them to keep it and instead just deleted the extra 10 gigs.

toekneeg ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:12:08 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They aren't trying to charge them and it will be just deleted. It's the user's choice to pay for it or not. If they don't want to, it gets deleted.

shrubberynights ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:15:11 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They are trying to charge them for it. That is how money entered the discussion to begin with. OP didn't offer to pay money for it, Microsoft told them they had to pay for it or it would be deleted.

toekneeg ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:28:07 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

OK, I thought you meant trying as in actively trying to charge the OP for services without their consent. I understand what you are saying now but still, there were emails around a year ago and articles all around the internet I remember seeing about it. OP literally had to be away from the internet and their emails for a year to not know about it.

My theory is OP just wanted to to create a meme for sweet sweet Karma.

shrubberynights ยท -1 points ยท Posted at 02:11:17 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Well I can't speak to OP's motives for posting, but I agree that Microsoft is still a scumbag for offering a set amount of storage, then lowering it and trying to charge for 2/3 of what they previously offered free.

toekneeg ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 02:45:43 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'd agree, if there was no reason they did this. But to make a valid opinion don't we need to know the other side of the story? A little research and it can easily be found that users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average. (http://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft-downgrades-free-onedrive-storage-5gb-discontinues-unlimited-storage-options)

I'm sure this inflated the cost to run the servers more than expected. So, who was the scumbag in this scenario now?

shrubberynights ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 02:55:34 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Microsoft. They offered a free service and people took them up on it. It's Microsoft's responsibility to put limits on it, not the people they offered the service to. They sent out an email, lowered the amount of storage and then tried to charge for a portion of it. If they had simply deleted the excess after the notification, rather than attempting to charge for it, then I wouldn't think it was scummy. The problem is not that they scaled back, but that they scaled back and tried to charge for something they originally offered free.

The money grab is why Microsoft is still the scumbag.

toekneeg ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 05:47:27 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

That's fine if you see it that way, but it's not how it is. The few that took advantage of the situation are the scumbags and therefore caused the rest of us to suffer the consequences. There were emails sent to the email address of the OneDrive account, on screen notfications if you had an msn email account, notifications online within the OneDrive account, on the OneDrive app, and numourous online articles addressing what you needed to do and the link you needed to visit if you wanted to keep your "existing upgraded online storage for free". There's only so much a company can do without the user eventually accepting responsibility for their own actions. I know, it's an odd thing to accept in today's world. Plus, I realize how satisfying it is to find any reason to blame Microsoft for something.

If a group of people found a way to spam Reddit with 100,000 messages a second, causing them server trouble and possibly monetary hardship due to increased server traffic and upgrades and whatever else, which causes Reddit to limit our near infinite ability to post as much as we want, whenever we want, to something like 10 times a day with a 5 minute interval in between posts, then implements a paid program to post without restrictions, I wouldn't label Reddit as a scumbag. I'd blame the ones who took advantage of the situation as the scumbags. Being the cause of it all. It's not the same type of scenario, but the concept is similar.

Also, they didn't attempt to charge for something they took away. They offered a solution to keep your existing expanded storage if A) you didn't opt in to keep the upgraded expanded storage and B) you actually need extra storage beyond what the new cap would be. I'm pretty sure, anyone that used the free expanded storage, used it enough to see at least one of the many notifications that were given out within the year before they changed the policy.

shrubberynights ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:00:26 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I don't know why you're making this into an argument. It's an opinion. I'll address your comment, though.

ย

That's fine if you see it that way, but it's not how it is.

Yes, it is. Microsoft offered something for free. Then they scaled it back. Then they charged money for something that was previously free (10 of the 15 GB). This part is not opinion. That's how it is. If you disagree with my opinion that this makes Microsoft the scumbag in this situation, that's your opinion.

ย

There were emails sent to the email address of the OneDrive account, on screen notfications if you had an msn email account, notifications online within the OneDrive account, on the OneDrive app, and numourous online articles addressing what you needed to do and the link you needed to visit if you wanted to keep your "existing upgraded online storage for free".

I don't disagree with any of this. EDIT: Except that you didn't get to keep it for free, they gave you a year to react to it.

ย

There's only so much a company can do without the user eventually accepting responsibility for their own actions. I know, it's an odd thing to accept in today's world. Plus, I realize how satisfying it is to find any reason to blame Microsoft for something.

This is completely immaterial to what I'm saying. Microsoft could have deleted anything above the 5 GB and have been done with it. I'll bold this so it stands out to you, because it is the entire point of my comments and it's my opinion. They didn't have to try and charge people for something that was previously free. That is a scumbag move.

ย

Also, they didn't attempt to charge for something they took away. They offered a solution to keep your existing expanded storage if A) you didn't opt in to keep the upgraded expanded storage and B) you actually need extra storage beyond what the new cap would be.

They offered a solution which they charged for. When it was free to use previously. Your example "A" doesn't bother me, but "B" does. Because it was free. You consider people using Microsoft's free service freely as taking advantage of it. People took them up on what was offered. Suppose you say, "hey man, use this grocery cart for free" If I say, "sure, thanks" and then proceed to fill the cart, I haven't taken advantage of you or the cart. If you try to charge me to use 2/3 of the cart after I've already started using it, that's a scumbag move.

ย

For the examples you posted of people using 75 TB of space, if something is "unlimited" it cannot be taken advantage of in the sense that you claim it was. You can't use too much because it's unlimited. TBH, the entire unlimited part is really beside the point. That's not even what OP posted about. I'm just discussing it with you because I think that was also a scumbag move. The difference between what you're talking about and what OP is talking about is this:

  • The unlimited storage that was offered with OneDrive was used as a selling point to get people to subscribe to Office 365. A fact which makes it even more of a scumbag move, IMO. "Unlimited" was reduced to 1 TB of storage, which should really suffice for the needs of most people, but it's not what they were offered to begin with. As such, this is unethical at best. This is known as bait and switch for anyone that subscribed when it was supposed to be free.

  • OP was talking about the free 15 GB of storage that was reduced to 5 GB of storage. This was not a result of people storing 75 TB because the max they could use already was 15 GB. This was Microsoft scaling back on a service they offered for free. What I didn't realize is that there already were paid storage plans in place prior to scaling back. This makes it a little less scummy to me, now that I know that, but it's still a scumbag move, in my opinion. The concept really isn't that far off from a drug dealer getting you hooked for free.

ย

Here is a link that outlines the changes that Microsoft made if you want to use it for reference.

toekneeg ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 07:41:07 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I'm not really trying to argue, just trying to lay out the facts. I respect your opinion or anyone elses. Sometimes opinions are based upon other peoples reactions, and sometimes they are based upon facts. From my perspective, I've been involved with this specific OneDrive scenario since before they offered the free storage. I currently have 8.88 GB used out out 130 GB of free storage. I remember signing up for the initial free storage, having to sign up with Bing (for an additional 100GB, then awhile later, finding out they were taking it all away. Then reading about how users were backing up tons of stuff and taking advantage so that was the reason it was going away. They then offered an opportunity to keep all that free storage just by opting in. And if a customer didn't do that, a way to still keep the additional storage so they wouldn't just lose all their data they stored if needed.

I understand anyone looking from the outside for the first time, can see this as a scumbag move. Although having a bit more insight into the situation I can realize what was done and why. So, with no disrespect, it feels your opinion is based upon uninformed misconceptions. Which was fueled by the OP's post.

Checking the current top comment, and it reiterates the ability to conserve your free storage. So again, it seems OP's meme was created either in sarcasm, or misinformation. Which is very common. Without an inside perspective or more information, we can only make a speculated opinion, which isn't based on fact. Not trying to change your opinion, but for me, I'd much rather base my opinion on true facts than uninformed speculation.

Microsoft offered something for free. Then they scaled it back. Then they charged money for something that was previously free. This part is not opinion. That's how it is.

You see.. if the situation was black and white, this would be correct. It is also misinformed. It is basically saying Microsoft bait and switched everyone for no reason, other than to get you to sub to their service by offering free storage, then arbitrarily taking it away like candy from a baby. But it isn't true. You linked me the blogpost and I linked you an article explaining what happened which caused them to scale back their service.

Microsoft could have deleted anything above the 5 GB and have been done with it.

This is what I would call a scumbag move. Hey buddy you know all those family photos you have? Well ya. it's 10 GB, sorry buddy, we're going to randomly delete half them starting right.. now and you have no option to keep any of it!! Instead there were choices so consumers wouldn't lose all of it. Which wasn't because MS decided to be scumbags and for no reason scale back the service.

shrubberynights ยท 1 points ยท Posted at 09:25:36 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

Sigh.

Then reading about how users were backing up tons of stuff and taking advantage so that was the reason it was going away.

This affects the people with the Office 365 subscription service only. People utilizing the 15 GB of free storage were limited to 15 GB. That's it. Again, not opinion, just fact. They implemented a 1 TB limit for the subscribers and that solved that. There was no reason to downgrade the free service to 5 GB. Furthermore, it's not taking advantage of a situation if you utilize what is offered. It's not. So it was still a scumbag move.

I understand anyone looking from the outside for the first time, can see this as a scumbag move. Although having a bit more insight into the situation I can realize what was done and why. So, with no disrespect, it feels your opinion is based upon uninformed misconceptions. Which was fueled by the OP's post.

Honestly, you're just trying to make yourself sound more informed. You're not. See, I went online and looked it up. There is no ambiguity with what happened. You have no more knowledge about what happened than what is in either of those links, because there's no more knowledge to be had. So don't get it twisted, because while I'm more than willing to concede you have every right to a different opinion, if you start trying to imply anything other than the facts, I'm going to call you out on it.

We don't need to use a Redditor's comment to determine whether or not you could "conserve your free storage." That is outlined in the link I posted. No, you could not. You had up to 1 year to do whatever you wanted to do with any data that exceeded 5 GB. After that you had to upgrade to a paid service, or lose the data. None of that is opinion, that is fact. Go read it if you disagree.

You see.. if the situation was black and white, this would be correct.

It is quite literally black and white. It is spelled out in the link I posted. I'll say it again. Microsoft offered a free service. Then they scaled it back. THIS HAPPENED. There's no shade of gray here, that is exactly what happened and they make no bones about it. The blog post is from OneDrive. It is official. It is not misinformed, it is on the site. Click the link. No one said that Microsoft scaled back for "no reason." What I am saying is that Microsoft offered something free. Then they scaled it back. Then they charged money for something that was previously free. The reason that YOU offer for them scaling back HAS NO BEARING on the 15 GB to 5 GB change. That only applies to the Office 365 subscribers that had unlimited storage. A reduction to the unlimited storage to 1 TB (also a scumbag move) was implemented to solve the problem that you describe. Why do I think that was a scumbag move? Because if you don't want people to treat it like it's unlimited storage, don't offer them unlimited storage.

Hey buddy you know all those family photos you have? Well ya. it's 10 GB, sorry buddy, we're going to randomly delete half them starting right.. now and you have no option to keep any of it!!

This is not what I'm saying. You're building a straw man. They notified everyone, as you already stated, to which I've already said I agree with (because it's obviously a fact), with plenty of time to remove any data in excess of 5 GB. At the end of my last comment I noted, "What I didn't realize is that there already were paid storage plans in place prior to scaling back." This is the only thing I didn't understand at the beginning of this conversation. That changes things a bit, but I still think it's a scumbag move. That's my opinion. You have a different opinion about that. Fine that's great. We can leave it at that.

Everything in this comment is simply me repeating myself. At this point, unless you have something new to add to the discussion, I'm done. I'm not going to argue facts that either you don't understand or you're twisting. I've posted a link from an official source that VERY CLEARLY outlines what happened.

The only thing left out is what we think about it. I'm secure in what I think and I understand exactly what I read. You can pretend that I don't understand if you want to try to look superior, but anyone with half a brain that does the research will recognize that's what you're doing. I'm not interested in that conversation.

Yea idk dude, but they offered to let you keep plenty of free storage a while ago, and I've got 30 GBs for free

Drewcifer236 ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 00:18:56 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Yeah, I remember when I started using the OneDrive, it was quite clear that only 5gb would be free and the extra 10gb was a free trial. I don't use it so I never opted to keep the extra space. I just made sure I never exceeded 5gb worth of storage. And I'm even the kind of guy who misses that stuff and is poor at planning for when those types of specials end.

Seems like OP failed on this one. Everyone in the thread has verified that Microsoft was quite clear about the 15gb. Sorry, OP, this one is on you.

They did this to me with Office 365, "Hey sign up for this and we'll give you unlimited for life! We're serious!" 6 months later, I get the email "Ohh yeah about that, sorry some of you guys actually thought we were serious when we said that and used all the data we were advertising so umm yeah we can't offer that anymore, byeeeee!" I ended up cancelling Office 365 cuz that's really the main reason why I signed up for it too.

You could always set up your own multi-node mesh network backup system for free with bittorrent sync. Benefits:

  1. Unlimited space
  2. Windows/mac/linux/mobile clients
  3. You don't have to rely on a 3rd party who might sell your data or lose it to a breech

Onedrive was slow and refused to work when I needed it to. Word docs took minutes vs seconds on dropbox. The office integration was great, but not good enough for me to keep using it.

Bummer that this is happening, even if OP did miss the popup or whatever promo.

Katastic_Voyage ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 04:09:29 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)*

I've got 30 GB for free from Google Drive for being an early adopter.

Fuck yeah. #sorrynotsorry

I was looking around for some extra space because it's full and I was like "Dropbox, they were the first, they've gotta have lots of space, right?" 2 GB. I was like, "WTF? I've got videos from my cellphone that are bigger than that."

I'm going to upgrade to the 100 GB Google Drive one of these days. It's practically free at like $2 a month. That's insanely cheap when you think about how much a 100 GB hard drive used to cost just 10-years ago. Adding the fact that Google Drive is a cloud service with dedicated off-site backups, if it weren't for how shitty our internet service providers are in the USA (Fuck you, Comcast), you could almost do away with any on-site storage and never EVER worry about hard drive crashes taking down your personal and work data.

When I start my business, their 1 TB for $10 / month, 10 TB for $100 / month, would pay for itself in one server collapse.

I'm stressing all of this because over the last three months, I've been doing NOTHING but recovering numerous failed computer systems with incomplete (SQL only), or completely non-existent backups where 99% of all critical business documents, forms, receipts went down with the server. It happens all the time.

Fun fact: A RAID1, mirror, doesn't protect you when both copies are corrupted. Opened up the case, and almost every capacitor near the CPU was blown. So it was blowing who-knows how many corrupted bytes into those poor partitions.

Last week a client lost both master file tables on their partition (read: FUBAR) so as a last resort I had to run PhotoRec which reads every block in RAW mode and tries to find files. It's an amazing tool written by amazing people. But the problem is, the file table contains all the filenames. So even if I save your important invoices, they're going to be in a sea of 10,000's of other PDFs all named "21102.pdf", "21103.pdf", "21104.pdf". So enjoy scrolling through a sea of thumbnails to try and find the document you actually need.

Here's one more everyone misses: If an important document is on a workstation, and that workstation dies? It doesn't mean jack shit if the server is getting backed up. PUT EVERYTHING IMPORTANT on a network drive located on the server, for the love of God. "But I've got backups!" doesn't mean anything if your IT rep is too stupid to capture your important files.

Lastly: OFF-SITE BACKUP. A backup that sits in the same room as the server, or same building, might as well not be a backup. If a fire hits, you're screwed. If a robber hits, you're screwed. If a power surge hits, you may be screwed.

Those are all issues that cloud-backups do really well. And most companies don't really push 1-10 TB of data--at least not data that's actually business critical.

I had 30 gig, pretty pissed Microsoft has downsized me to 5. I was happily backing up my phone images, and using this service. After receiving my notification, its taken me a while to get over it.
I also understand microsofts claim to people who were abusing the system and backing up Tera bytes of info.

2 bucks for 100 gb on google drive. you can just set your entire c:\users[your username] folder as your sync drive and keep your downloads or w/e elsewhere.

personally i just have an e:\google drive folder that gets everything saved. dont bother saving music because its by default always backed up to multiple places. google photos backs up everything in e:\photos and movies have no backup apart from buying on blu-ray.

Soenneker ยท 0 points ยท Posted at 04:26:34 on July 10, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Since I'm getting cut to 5gb as well I looked into other providers. Google Drive definitely is enticing but I dislike how uploaded files count towards your limit. Amazon allows for unlimited photos no matter how they get on there. Unfortunately they don't have a nice desktop sync app. Odrive seems to be the solution though; I wrote about it here:

Big chains get Microsoft for nothing. Fry's can sell a laptop with Windows 10 for 75 dollars. If I want to build my own computer I have to pay 200'for Windows? Like WTF? I hate OSX or whatever apple uses and it seems Microsoft is just trying to copy their OS. I don't want a monthly bill to use their software. I don't want to freaking upgrade every year. Microsoft has basically forced me to use a shitty OS that doesn't even work right. If I could I would build a system that runs on Windows 98. Too bad you can't get drivers for anything for that OS. I just want to turn my computer on and use MY software. Not use half my processing power to serve me bate and switch offers from Microsoft every day. Thanks for the free upgrade to Windows 10 BTW. Now if you could just make it compatible with my video card in my Alienware computer, that would be great!

This will get buried, but personal cloud storage is also a great option. I have a WD MyCloud. It plugs into my router, and I have cloud storage that I can access from anywhere.

A_Pointy_Rock ยท 8 points ยท Posted at 22:10:42 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

I hate to break it to you, but WD is lying to you. That's not what "the cloud" is.

MNTwins420 ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 22:15:18 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's a personal cloud. It's my data stored on my device that I can access from anywhere that I have internet access.

A_Pointy_Rock ยท 9 points ยท Posted at 22:16:56 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

It's a networked hard drive - a nas, not the same thing. "The cloud" is a series of servers with integrated redundancies.

MNTwins420 ยท -2 points ยท Posted at 22:18:19 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Either way, it works the same for me. I access files in there the same way I do for Onedrive and Dropbox.

A_Pointy_Rock ยท 6 points ยท Posted at 22:21:20 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

Just remember, if it dies, so do the files - that's all. The main difference.

MNTwins420 ยท 2 points ยท Posted at 22:23:09 on July 9, 2016 ยท (Permalink)

They do make a different MyCloud that supports multiple swappable hard drives so you can use redundant back ups. But yes, I understand.
