The older I get, the "nerdier" I realize sports are, at least if you're following closely and Not just casually. It's all about following numbers and stats for each player and team. We even do a lot of advanced stats beyond the basic things like number of goals or shots.
Fantasy sports takes this to a whole other level.
My cousin and I were watching football, drinking beer and setting up the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures for battle just a short time ago. It was a great contrast.
Some people don't give a fuck equally. I am one of them. Well I guess that's not true, I'd rather watch any of the 6 Star Wars (haven't seen the newest one yet) on endless loop than sit through an entire football game in Dallas.

In my context, I've dealt with people in their 30s who just cannot grasp the idea of League of Legends being played professionally by some people. They think it's sad and that there's "nothing to really enjoy" from watching it.
You look into their character a little bit and you see that they like Sports and it pisses me off. The principle is the exact same -- it's the spirit of competition between highly-skilled players in a format that you can understand and appreciate. If you don't understand the format (the videogame or the specific Sport) then why, just why would you presume that that principle is any different, still?
My understanding of Football and Rugby and the like is minimal, but I can still look at the games and try to appreciate it, to observe and think "Holy shit, that's pretty sweet". Trying to devalue either one of them is just as insulting to them as it is to the other.
Sports are cool and healthy. ESports are cool as well, just not as healthy.
Well, healthier actually as you avoid concussions and broken bones playing video games..

I hate when I listen to someone go on and on about something I'm not all that interested in and then as soon as I mention whatever is catching my attention at the time they just shoot me down and tell me they don't care about whatever I'm talking about it. I didn't give a fuck about what you were talking about but I was being courteous and engaging you in a conversation. My family does shit like this a lot. I see people do it from all obsessions though, whether it be nerds, jocks, people talking about shopping or just anything else. This is a huge sign to me that the person is overly narcissistic and isn't gonna be worth the energy that you put into a relationship or friendship with them. It will probably end up being a very one sided relationship.
I'm a good conversationalist usually. I have my off days, we all do, but some people are just never good at it. I will actively listen, ask questions etc. I can usually get myself interested in just about anything. But I've had friends and family members that love talking about their interests for hours but get very uninterested and distracted when another subject that doesn't have to do with them comes up. Cellphone use makes it even more obvious these days, when people start surfing their phones and just go ugh huh a lot.

It's interesting how many people are getting so defensive in this thread. It's clearly aimed at the people who are giving shit to Star wars fans for being fans. If it doesn't apply to you, it's not saying you are a jerk because you like sports. It's saying that for the jerks that put people down for what they like, there are things that they like that other people feel the same way about. If you don't do that then it's irrelevant to you.
I agree. It's like people smell something vaguely-neckbeardy and have a visceral reaction that, to me, is in itself kind of neckbeardy.
I related to this post. I don't think people only like one or the other, but I recognize and have experienced that fans of one are less likely to be fans of the other than say, other movies (or other media in general).
I've never been part of the sports culture, but the fever pitch of hype that The Force Awakens reached leading up to its release definitely provided some perspective on what that kind of culture looks like from within.
Its hard to speculate as to why the reaction was THIS negative. I guess it's in the current Reddit zeitgeist to come down very hard on ideas that might be taken as promoting a "black and white" view of the world. From that platform, this is an easy target (nerds and jocks and stereotypes, oh my!).
That message could have been delivered without wording it in a way that heavily implies that Star Wars fans and sports fans are two exclusive groups. It's no everybody else's fault that OP is an idiot.

A well made production is a work of art that can stand for decades or even centuries. And they can definitely touch people's lives
But Star Wars is 1 movie or 1 movie series, even if you take all the star wars movies all the Harry Potter movies all the Jurassic park movies and all the fast and the furious movies you don't even have 1/5th of the number of college football games played in 1 weekend.
That's 1 sport, in 1 weekend. So when you want to compare one movie series to "sports" your comparing apples to oranges.

Yea they are a sport they put in just as much work and in some cases more work than traditional athletes.
The NFL collective bargaining limits teams to only a handful of practices a week but it's not uncommon for competitive video game players to play 10-12 hours a day
Just because it's not physically exhausting doesn't mean it doesn't require just as much hardwork dedication and team work at physical sports do.
Physics sports have physics limitations, mental sports have menta limitations. Which usually means Esports players practice 4x more a day in season that regular athletes do

I view athletes the same way I see craftsmen, someone who has devoted themselves to mastery of their art, value of skilled labour is incredibly valuable, you don't pay for porcelain figures you pay the person who made it aesthetically pleasing because it's something you can't do. The amount of time and effort put into creating these athletes is why they're paid so much, same with a scientist you don't pay them for what they do, you pay them because they know how to do it. Economically speaking, things are only worth what people will give up for them.

In the end, athletes can get paid one heck of a lot, but one of the reasons why they get paid so much is because they can get paid so much. There is a huge market for Sports and that's where the money comes in. Someone who has worked just as hard in another field (say, someone who has dedicated their life to Science) may not get the same fame or fortune as an athlete, because there aren't millions of people with the same interest in the same marketable way.
Economically speaking, things are only worth what people will give up for them.

I don't watch Sports or involve myself much in any of them but "Watching 22 men fight over a lopsided ball for a few hours while a couple of assholes talk throughout the whole ordeal..." is just... just ludicrously ignorant, really.
Good argument you've made all-in-all man, but I'd say that you shouldn't try to explain it to most people who don't get it online. Most people really just like to seem to down-play the entire thing just to piss off people they know who care.

I love playing sports. Watching on the other hand is about as interesting as watching flys fuck and I am no entomologist.
All I was trying to say is if they were payed a normal salary and covered properly by insurance I am sure there would be more people in it for the love of the game than those in it for the cash flow.
Sure there are those in it now for the love of the game, but then there are those who are in it for the money and can influence their position because of it. I.E. all the dog fighting, wife beating, child molesting, rapists who still hold their positions or are still in good standing with their respective organizations because their handlers payed them out.
Really? I think a lot of people enjoy seeing the best possible athletes play a game they love to the highest degree of skill and physicality. What would you say is a "normal" salary for these athletes who have to make their lives revolve around the sport , most are insured as well. The instances of shitty people doing shitty things is overblown because they are celebrities, and because a lot of people like to hate professional sports (like the people in this thread). Most athletes never do anything unsavory but that's just not news, it's no different than other celebrities never doing the time. While I like the idea of employing the people who love the sport, that's not how you get the best athletes and thus, a better spectacle.

You could halve their current pay and they would still be living more comfortably than most wealthy folk.
Why change it to that though? Why stop including things like merchandise and television licensing? They have to broker contracts with their employer to get that cash. Is it just an income equality thing? Because the owners would definitely just absorb any additional funds. Sports teams are businesses and act like it, but hey, why not start a publicly funded league of whatever sports you want to see.

Idk man when you are 24 years old playing a professional sport that you started playing at 10 that definitely most of your life.
And they are paid by economic value, sports leagues create markets and players are paid by what the market dictates.
Paying an athlete 30 million dollars may seem like a lot but if the athlete helps the owner make 50 milllion than paying them that much seems reasonable.
They wouldn't get paid as much as they do if it didn't make economic sense to pay them that much

First, more people are into sports. I can't stand them myself, but c'mon. They're not culturally ubiquitous because we're being oppressed, they're culturally ubiquitous because most people enjoy them.
Second, you're talking about people who act normally. I don't mean "Sports are normal; Star Wars isn't." That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that it's normal to try to strike up a conversation about mutual interests, and sports is a safer assumption in that area, particularly on a day-to-day basis.
They aren't going out in public in costumes pretending to be specific people, creating low-quality homemade prosthetic devices to match the height and body size and physical appearance of their favorite stars. They wear jerseys, or other memorabilia, in a show of support (generally for a person, or a group of people, who actually exist). They try to strike up the odd conversation. That's about it.
Sports are highly social, team-based activities to begin with. If you're into them, there's a lot to talk about. My love of Star Wars is personal. I don't need your input on whether or not the prequels ruined Darth Vader (they totally did) in order that I may enjoy the stories I'm reading, and you providing it may well be unwelcome.
Edit:TL,DR: Enjoy Star Wars. Stop whining about how oppressed your hobby is. I play D&D, Warhammer, Macho Women with Guns, modded PC games, and custom-designed board games; I've got you beat there. The older I get, the "nerdier" I realize sports are, at least if you're following closely and Not just casually. It's all about following numbers and stats for each player and team. We even do a lot of advanced stats beyond the basic things like number of goals or shots. Fantasy sports takes this to a whole other level.

In my context, I've dealt with people in their 30s who just cannot grasp the idea of League of Legends being played professionally by some people. They think it's sad and that there's "nothing to really enjoy" from watching it.
You look into their character a little bit and you see that they like Sports and it pisses me off. The principle is the exact same -- it's the spirit of competition between highly-skilled players in a format that you can understand and appreciate. If you don't understand the format (the videogame or the specific Sport) then why, just why would you presume that that principle is any different, still?
My understanding of Football and Rugby and the like is minimal, but I can still look at the games and try to appreciate it, to observe and think "Holy shit, that's pretty sweet". Trying to devalue either one of them is just as insulting to them as it is to the other.
Sports are cool and healthy. ESports are cool as well, just not as healthy.

You can obsess over anything you want as long as its something worth obsessing over. Sports are great for the athleticism and skill and cheering on your team. Star Wars is great because its exciting and fun characters and lightsabers are badass.

Baseball has been nerdy for decades thanks to statistics and especially saber metrics. Football has gotten that way recently due to Fantasy Football.
The latter has also become fairly mainstream but it's still a very nerdy origin.

I hate when I listen to someone go on and on about something I'm not all that interested in and then as soon as I mention whatever is catching my attention at the time they just shoot me down and tell me they don't care about whatever I'm talking about it. I didn't give a fuck about what you were talking about but I was being courteous and engaging you in a conversation. My family does shit like this a lot. I see people do it from all obsessions though, whether it be nerds, jocks, people talking about shopping or just anything else. This is a huge sign to me that the person is overly narcissistic and isn't gonna be worth the energy that you put into a relationship or friendship with them. It will probably end up being a very one sided relationship.

I'm a good conversationalist usually. I have my off days, we all do, but some people are just never good at it. I will actively listen, ask questions etc. I can usually get myself interested in just about anything. But I've had friends and family members that love talking about their interests for hours but get very uninterested and distracted when another subject that doesn't have to do with them comes up. Cellphone use makes it even more obvious these days, when people start surfing their phones and just go ugh huh a lot.

I agree. It's like people smell something vaguely-neckbeardy and have a visceral reaction that, to me, is in itself kind of neckbeardy.
I related to this post. I don't think people only like one or the other, but I recognize and have experienced that fans of one are less likely to be fans of the other than say, other movies (or other media in general).
I've never been part of the sports culture, but the fever pitch of hype that The Force Awakens reached leading up to its release definitely provided some perspective on what that kind of culture looks like from within.
Its hard to speculate as to why the reaction was THIS negative. I guess it's in the current Reddit zeitgeist to come down very hard on ideas that might be taken as promoting a "black and white" view of the world. From that platform, this is an easy target (nerds and jocks and stereotypes, oh my!).

Their is no question that a ton of work goes into film and television production
A well made production is a work of art that can stand for decades or even centuries. And they can definitely touch people's lives
But Star Wars is 1 movie or 1 movie series, even if you take all the star wars movies all the Harry Potter movies all the Jurassic park movies and all the fast and the furious movies you don't even have 1/5th of the number of college football games played in 1 weekend.
That's 1 sport, in 1 weekend. So when you want to compare one movie series to "sports" your comparing apples to oranges.

Yea they are a sport they put in just as much work and in some cases more work than traditional athletes.
The NFL collective bargaining limits teams to only a handful of practices a week but it's not uncommon for competitive video game players to play 10-12 hours a day
Just because it's not physically exhausting doesn't mean it doesn't require just as much hardwork dedication and team work at physical sports do.
Physics sports have physics limitations, mental sports have menta limitations. Which usually means Esports players practice 4x more a day in season that regular athletes do

But that is just an opinion. I think sports would be far more interesting if they were payed using real world economics. People would be in it for the fun and not the fame.
And you do not spend your entire life getting into the "highest level" of a sport, you spend the latter end of your high school years and a few of your college years. As long as you are semi-decent you are in.
Although even then, I have seen some terrible athletes.
They are not gods. We are only told as much by their handlers.

TIL. Most hockey players start at eight years old, most football players start in middle school. Do you think devoting so much of your life isn't impressive, or worth what people are willing to pay? What about the permanent physical damage most professional athletes sustain? Is giving away part of the rest of your life not worth payment either? Athletes are not gods you're right, but their level of bodily mastery, and knowledge of their sport is incredibly impressive and I am willing g to pay to see these men and women in action.

If you really want to get technical about it, yes, they do.
It starts off as a fun activity, then a hobby, then a career which lasts until you are at the cusp of 40, then you retire.
There are exceptions, usually in the non-cardio sports like golf or bowling.
Because that is what everybody else does to get a successful career? No. It is not even as impressive as somebody getting a doctorate in medical science.
What people are willing to pay does not equal what something is actually worth.
Some people are willing to pay exorbitant amounts of money on porcelain figurines while cost, materials, and labor really turn out to only be worth $12.
Watching 22 men fight over a lopsided ball for a few hours while a couple of assholes talk throughout the whole ordeal... I can not even justify that with a serious answer.
Hopefully most athletes know what the possible consequences are before going in. In which case, that is all on them and their insurance.
You make it sound like most athletes never live past 45.
You are glorifying normal people fighting for millions of dollars.

I'm glorifying human beings in peak physical condition competing against each other in sport. If all you can see is people fighting over a ball then you just don't understand sports, I imagine you don't like playing sports if you can't see the value in seeing people devoting themselves to sport. I view athletes the same way I see craftsmen, someone who has devoted themselves to mastery of their art, value of skilled labour is incredibly valuable, you don't pay for porcelain figures you pay the person who made it aesthetically pleasing because it's something you can't do. The amount of time and effort put into creating these athletes is why they're paid so much, same with a scientist you don't pay them for what they do, you pay them because they know how to do it. Economically speaking, things are only worth what people will give up for them.

In the end, athletes can get paid one heck of a lot, but one of the reasons why they get paid so much is because they can get paid so much. There is a huge market for Sports and that's where the money comes in. Someone who has worked just as hard in another field (say, someone who has dedicated their life to Science) may not get the same fame or fortune as an athlete, because there aren't millions of people with the same interest in the same marketable way.

I love playing sports. Watching on the other hand is about as interesting as watching flys fuck and I am no entomologist.
All I was trying to say is if they were payed a normal salary and covered properly by insurance I am sure there would be more people in it for the love of the game than those in it for the cash flow.
Sure there are those in it now for the love of the game, but then there are those who are in it for the money and can influence their position because of it. I.E. all the dog fighting, wife beating, child molesting, rapists who still hold their positions or are still in good standing with their respective organizations because their handlers payed them out.

Really? I think a lot of people enjoy seeing the best possible athletes play a game they love to the highest degree of skill and physicality. What would you say is a "normal" salary for these athletes who have to make their lives revolve around the sport , most are insured as well. The instances of shitty people doing shitty things is overblown because they are celebrities, and because a lot of people like to hate professional sports (like the people in this thread). Most athletes never do anything unsavory but that's just not news, it's no different than other celebrities never doing the time. While I like the idea of employing the people who love the sport, that's not how you get the best athletes and thus, a better spectacle.

Why change it to that though? Why stop including things like merchandise and television licensing? They have to broker contracts with their employer to get that cash. Is it just an income equality thing? Because the owners would definitely just absorb any additional funds. Sports teams are businesses and act like it, but hey, why not start a publicly funded league of whatever sports you want to see.

Idk man when you are 24 years old playing a professional sport that you started playing at 10 that definitely most of your life.
And they are paid by economic value, sports leagues create markets and players are paid by what the market dictates.
Paying an athlete 30 million dollars may seem like a lot but if the athlete helps the owner make 50 milllion than paying them that much seems reasonable.
They wouldn't get paid as much as they do if it didn't make economic sense to pay them that much

First, more people are into sports. I can't stand them myself, but c'mon. They're not culturally ubiquitous because we're being oppressed, they're culturally ubiquitous because most people enjoy them.
Second, you're talking about people who act normally. I don't mean "Sports are normal; Star Wars isn't." That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that it's normal to try to strike up a conversation about mutual interests, and sports is a safer assumption in that area, particularly on a day-to-day basis.
They aren't going out in public in costumes pretending to be specific people, creating low-quality homemade prosthetic devices to match the height and body size and physical appearance of their favorite stars. They wear jerseys, or other memorabilia, in a show of support (generally for a person, or a group of people, who actually exist). They try to strike up the odd conversation. That's about it.
Sports are highly social, team-based activities to begin with. If you're into them, there's a lot to talk about. My love of Star Wars is personal. I don't need your input on whether or not the prequels ruined Darth Vader (they totally did) in order that I may enjoy the stories I'm reading, and you providing it may well be unwelcome.
Edit: TL,DR: Enjoy Star Wars. Stop whining about how oppressed your hobby is. I play D&D, Warhammer, Macho Women with Guns, modded PC games, and custom-designed board games; I've got you beat there. Hands down. I will whine until your ears bleed and I guarantee you won't give a shit about the cheesy way my players take advantage of rules that weren't meant to be used that way, Takhisis damn it.

Really? Because the previous 6 movies, the LucasArts Empire, the Han vs Greedo shootout, "the stormtroopers can't shoot" vs. "the Empire gave them orders not to hit" debate, Swtor, spin off cartoons, EU stories/comics/novels, Jar Jar joke run, and much more, suggests that people have been mentioning Star Wars for a real long time. Probably since like 1977.
