Borderlands writing pretty much "peaked" at borderlands 2, it wasn't very funny but it was acceptable and occasionally i had a chuckle. Then it gradually deteriorated to recycled jokes, random for the sake of random and thinly veiled woke commentary in the pre-sequel and now its like it was written by a middle aged man desperate to remain relevant with the zoomer demographic
I was amazed when I saw people saying they loved Claptrap and Tiny Tina. One is an annoying character sprouting gibberish non stop and the other is pure cancer. A white teen speaking in the most exaggerated black American slang I've ever heard. Apparently the people frawning over Borderlands being "inclusive" didn't clock on she's a racist caricature who might as well have been decked up in black face.
"ayo shorty, dig yo fine booty over ere so we can get some of dem rizzle dizzle fo shizzle bang bootylicious fire sticks I call lollipops. I finna finesse some before but they clapped back ya dig? Yaaaas queen slaaay because ya'll know Tina is in da HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUSE!"
Then again I can imagine some middle class progressives were cumming loads over her as this is how they LARP on Reddit and Twitter pretending they're from the street.
It's like the diversity-hires all got dumped in the writing room (or management) while the rest of the company keeps on doing what made it famous in the first place.
Honestly, B1 was a great game, played it before 3 came out and it wasn't that bad. Tried playing 2 again, it was alright, was told the DLC were the best part but honestly didn't feel like playing all of them, I know I did torgues and I stopped at the beginning of Tinas. I remember pre sequel being fun, but it definitely wasn't as funny or that great, didn't bring anything new to the table. Also the fucking bleep thing was the biggest annoyance in the entire game, I had never played the Torgue DLC until my last playthrough of BL2(didn't have internet when I first played BL2 so no DLCs) so it just really got annoying after the 1st playthrough.
Borderlands 3, I knew something was off, at first I'm like, oh ok, it's purposely dated right? It's all "haha social media influencers are such a fad" and then it just kept getting worse. "There's a war going on but I NEED my coffee," "Haha my mom's such a whore but she has all the answers to every problem," "You need help to save the universe? That's gonna cost you fucko!," And Hammerlock being Gay wasn't really a big deal, like, it didn't feel shoehorned in but was it inferred he was in his DLC(which I never played) and also wasnt he was whiter in 2?
By the return to Pandora, the game was kinda tiring. The spectacle of the giant vehicle was fun, but honestly they should've kept it vehicle only instead of you entering it and also it feels kinda....cheap?....getting non-voiceactor celebrities and using it as a marketing thing(I swear I saw somewhere Penn and Teller advertised as in the game?). And by the final level, with the dude who looks like Danny DeVito, I got bored, and quit. And I think I know why. Borderlands should have ended at 2. The story was over. And more importantly, they had no way to meaningfully improve their game. Presequel added zero gravity and an annoying air meter, which was like, nothing really, and it really shows that they had nothing to improve the formula. It's been the same old crap for the 4 games. Kill waves of enemies, open chests and maybe every 5th one drops a decent gun, meet a difficulty spike, grind for an hour, repeat for the next 4-5 hours, do the same thing again with every enemy gaining 30levels.
I don't think they should've ended it in BL2 because thw game has a good core and the player can still have places to go as far as the expanded universe allows.
The problem is that the writers are hung up on repeating the same themes with the same characters because that's what they know and that's what worked for them the last time.
The humor in Borderlands seems very popular amongst most Reddit users but I suppose that's no surprise when you consider all the writing in the game screams like it was written by the average autistic Redditor that only they could possibly find funny.
Throw in a few identity politics with tacked on "humor" like so "killing people is fun but you know what's not fun? Homophobia! Yeah that's right! The only thing that would have made everything better for them is if characters were regularly making japes about religion and preaching about communism.
It's the same cut of humor as what you can find in the Avengers movies or Harry Potter or whatever. These movies were made FOR them and it's not surprising Borderlands is just like that.
Also same goes for any modern beloved franchise that gets taken over by a womanchild or manchild Reddit-level writer. Same kind of shitty writing.

Yeah same, after finishing the 2nd one with my brother I tried to see what was the general consensus about the writing, seems people like this shit and I cannot for the love of me figure out how.
Even playing the game with my brother I was cringing at all the lines and asked him if he felt the same but nope...
Yeah my one buddy who loves BLs as a whole, begged me to play 3 just the other day. Literally said "I'll pay for PS+ and the game if you play it with me again." I'm like "that's awesome but no thank you." Lol like my face hurts from cringing too long the first time I tried to play it on my PC copy. (Oh the same PC copy that another friend bought for me, and I couldn't play.)

Haven't played 3, could have sworn that the writing had changed between 1 and 2, 1 was mostly serious with some quirks here and there, 2 was full on cringe
I think 2 is at least better than 3. But they did change a lot between 1 and 2, you're right. It was the fact that people complained there wasn't a really a driving story in BLs 1 that caused BLs 2 to have such a thick script. Personally, I liked the lack of a driving story in favor of immersion as a vault hunter in BLs 1. It felt more like my story as a badass making his way through Pandora. But yep, BLs 2 comes along and makes everything complicated. I liked Jack as a villain and there were some other good characters, but BLs 3 writing is about as likable as finding out I have terminal cancer.

I find this style of writing to plague the landscape of indie games. A few months ago I purchased an arpg called Slormancer and actually refunded it after 30 minutes because the writing was so peak reddit I couldnโt take it anymore. Even when choosing a class the hero tries to persuade you not to pick them because the joke is that they are literally too scared to fight the antagonist of the game
