I think this argument largely misses the point: Snape sent Voldamort to kill James/Harry, resulting in Lilly's death. Snape killed Lilly.
All that was left of her was that dick Harry. It's more like redemption that Snape has to keep him safe, honoring the sacrifice of Lilly whom he killed. It all sort of makes sense.
