"Could Not Check Name Availability" error when attempting to purchase Minecraft

While helping out on the Minecraft Community Support discord we have seen at least two people being unable to purchase or redeem codes for Minecraft due to the error "Could Not Check Name Ability: BadRequestException. See screenshot below for the full error:
