Villagers die instead of being converted to zombie villagers on hard mode

When trying to convert villagers into zombie villagers the villagers died instead. This occured on a realm. It was on hard mode and it was a survival world that has achievements on. Tested and cannot reproduce on a normal world (not realm) so I really don't know what happened.
