Why Won't Name Tags Work When I Put Them In A Anvil

I was playing on my friend's realm and every time I put a name tag and rename it what I want it to be, it doesn't come up. Sometimes it happens with the signs as well. We would type something in them and once we put the glow squid ink in them, it disappears.
