Realms Anvil naming

My friend created a new realm for survival. We spawned near a snow biome and decided we wanted a pet polar. so i went mining, got enough iron and crafted an anvil. We found a nametag in a mineshaft when we were mining. I put the nametag in the anvil like normal but the the item refused to be renamed. My friend attempted this as well but the same result happened.
