Kindle fire Stuck on Loading Resource Pack, then fails

When using either of my kids' Kindle Fires to connect to our family realm I get the same issue:

Stuck on "Loading Resource Packs" for an extended period
Errors out after c. 5 minutes with "Unable to connect to the world. Please check your connection to the internet and try again."
