save and quit doesn't pause time passing in realm

I'm playing on a realm I created with realms plus.

When I save and quit, I do so during game daytime so it's safe when I sign back in. However, in my realm, when I save and quit during daytime, I come back to night, constantly being attacked by mobs. I can't find the answer anywhere, but I'm wondering if realms don't stop running right away when a player signs out. (I'm the only player with access to this realm, so it's not because other players are still in.)

I recently died and lost everything, as I was exploring the world and saved it in daylight but when I signed back in, it was to the death screen. I didn't know where I'd died, so I was unable to come back and get my items. 

Is this something I need to be prepared for with realms? Or is it a bug?
