Disappearance of items after death

I just got a minecraft realm for me and my friends and I've noticed a bug where everytime I die near a block where no lava or water is in sight,  no matter if it's on the surface or underground, all of the items disappear and I loose all of my progress even though I have no special settings on or anything like that.
