Can't connect to realm on Switch

I haven't been able to access realms since 1.16.100. it takes several attempts to connect, if it will at all. Then if I do connect I can't play for more than 15 minutes or open menus without it crashing to a loading bar that doesn't go away till I close the app. When I close the app it says it closed due to an error. It has also crashed out in single player several times the same way.
