Minecraft Realms force-muting members

I own a realm and I can't see the chat, and nobody sees what I type to them. Whenever I try muting the member and click x to exit the menu it keeps returning to them muted. I tried to go into my privacy settings and they are all set appropriately like tutorials around the net have shown. When I go into other servers I also can't see chat at all, and I can type but nobody sees what I've written, as mentioned.

Commands like /time set day work but nothing can see what I have written and it just keeps muting people even after I uncheck the mute option on their player profile in-game.

I have tested with /tell [user] [message] command and that works and they see my message. But that's really inconvenient and it would be nice if the user could just see my message in chat, and I could see theirs.
