Shulker box dissapears after breaking

I break a shulker box.  It dissapears and I don't have it in my inventory.  Happens sporadically.  Once in the nether on bedrock roof, once in the overworld.

When I was in the overworld I was able to walk around and pick it up (though it was invisible). on top of bedrock roof it wasn't.
