The join realms option doesn't appear

My friend sent me a link for a realm, the link doesn't work so I went into Minecraft to enter the code and it says that I am not a member of any realms yet but there is not an option to join it. So I went online and found the realms.gg link for a realm it loaded into Minecraft without a problem but there still isn't an option to join a realm.
