Can't connect my friend's realm

Ever since the realms shutdown on November 6th, I have not been able to log into my friends realm server. Every time I try to join the game, it says "Disconnected due to world corruption. Try reopening the world or restarting from a previous backup". What exactly did that shutdown do? Is this just downtime and I have to wait it out? And does my friend who owns the server have to do something with the realm?
