I cant join a realm at all

My friend invited me to a realm. I don't use this version so he was trying to show me how to join and we realized that I just literally don't have the envelope icon at all. So we decided to try an invite code and I don't have the section where you input the code either, it just says "Add Friend". Also I friended my friend on xbox and had him favorited but it refused to show his game status to me in the menu.
