Cannot connect to realm

I cannot connect to my realm on Bedrock addition of Minecraft, created on windows 10, neither can any of my friends who use different devices such as the Xbox or Switch. A message appears saying unable to connect to realm. I cannot download the realms file either, it just states "initialising download" but then nothing happens.
