I cannot join a friend using Minecraft Realms feature

I cannot get past the splash screen for the Minecraft Realms screen that requires you to either get a free trial of realms or buy a realm yourself, even if I want to just play on my friend's realm. I've checked around and there doesn't seem to be much help on the topic. I am unable to so much as even click the 'Play' button at the bottom to attempt joining, and the pop-up screen will not go away.
