Minecraft realms connectivity/server downage

My friends and I have been unable to connect to my realms since about 5 days ago. We have been getting timed out with the message "io.netty.channel.connecttimeoutexception connection timed out" or just stuck on "loading world" or "connecting to world" when trying to switch worlds. This problem has been persisting for a while now and I've asked a few people and it seems that some people are completely unaffected while some others are also having this issue. There has been little to no communication as to what is wrong from the dev team which is an incredibly shady move considering the subscription based nature of realms. An update as to why this is happening or a fix would be appreciated.
