Red stone contractions don't work correctly

Every time I try building something with redstone the piston with slime/honey blocks with blocks attached to them the piston will not activate. The pistons don't seem not to activate with any blocks next to them I have tried many other options I can use it seems you as of right now I can only use simple piston and lever to activate it but not a complex one please fix this thank you.
