IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

I get the error: IOException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host when I attempt to connect to realms. Other players are connecting to it just fine. Please advise on what sorts of log files would be beneficial to helping to solve this problem. 

 

Troubleshooting steps taken:

Reinstalled

Multiple versions (tried 1.14.x)

New realm

 

Also interesting to note that the problem does not persist when I use a VPN to connect to the realm. However, I would like to play without the use of a VPN
