Disconnected from server while in nether for 3 minutes

When I am playing on a Realms server and I spend around 3 minutes in the nether I inevitably get kicked. The error I get says disconnected from server. The screen goes black before this happens and for about 30 seconds before I get kicked I am unable to mine blocks or place blocks.
