Liking likes turned us form creative mode into survival mode

The situation is like this: one day, while my friend and I were fighting the Wither and the warden , suddenly we turned from Creative Mode to Survival Mode, causing all our equipment and weapons to be destroyed. However, we didn't press anything, we just kept fighting the Wither and the warden. Why did we suddenly turned from Creative Mode to Survival Mode?
