Unable to eat, health/hunger can't replenish as a result

In minecraft realms, I am unable to eat. I am on normal difficulty. My hunger bar is low and I am unable to restore health. I have tried pressing down for an extended amount of time as well, but I am still unable to eat. The only thing I can eat is cake.
