Xbox reports "unable to join realms because of how Microsoft account is set up".

On Xbox one,  I keep incorrectly getting a message saying I cannot join realms because of how my Microsoft account is set up.  I am able to play the realm on my iPad using the same Microsoft account.  I do not have a child account, and I have made sure my online settings are correct.
