My underground villager trading hall died via raid fireworks

After completing a raid above my underground villager trading hall, the villagers began letting off fireworks. As you can imagine, villagers, explosives, and an enclosed space don't mix very well. I lost over half of the villagers in the trading hall to firework explosions, and was wondering if this was a bug or intended feature.
