Text on sign disappears after exiting text box

Placing a sign opens up the text box. Words are typed on to the sign. When completed I click enter which then closes the text box...but there is no writing on the sign. This has been happening since at least 1.17.

Some, but not all, signs written before this issue occurred are also now blank.
