Blast furnaces don't smelt items

I was in my survival planning my base.I decided I wanted to use stone bricks I found that you need stone so I crafted a blast furnace and put it down i put coal in it and got my cobblestone but it wouldn't smelt.(this was my first bug report) This was in version 1.16.40.02 hotfix
