Spare items disappearing in crafting.

I was crafting a wooden sword, I was doing it quickly put 6 planks on the table, as you all know only two should have been used and I only placed 1 stick. So I shift clicked the sword so it goes straight into the hotbar but my remaining 4 planks disappeared.
