Minecraft Pocket Edition not allowing me to equip hats and accecories on inported skins.

When I touched the "profile" button, I touched "import skin" and got my own custom skin by importing it into Minecraft. I've unlocked lots of cool hats that I like, so I really wanted to equip a hat onto my imported skin. I was very confused when I tapped a hat I liked and wanted to equip, but instead of equipping onto my imported custom skin, my skin changed to the default skin Alex. Is there anyway I can fix this?
